Lord Mongol
I'm currently working on my Ultramarines but I'm not sure if I should proceed with my current paint scheme. Looking for some advice and/or opinions from this fine community! So without trying to clog the forums too much, they can be found here! I know, I know, shameless promotion of my blog here! At least it's not an external link - lol! Thanks in advance! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190108-ultramarines-tactical-squad/ Share on other sites
greatcrusade08
The biggest thing that stands out to me is the chest eagles.. they could look so much better if you did a good wash and highlights on them. i prefer to take the time and paint each 'feather' individually as it creates an awesome effect IMO. a quicker way is to build up layers of drybrushing going from top to bottom only Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190108-ultramarines-tactical-squad/#findComment-2252922 Share on other sites
sgtNACHO
Easiest answer is obviously, stop making them Ultramarines. ;) But Smurf-hate aside, they seem to be coming in alright. I'd add more mordian blue probably just a second coat. It should cover up more of the black undercoat so it'll appear brighter. Also when you use the badab black don't cover the whole model and just focus on the recesses like on the legs and on the helmets, so the blue will stand out more. Also you have the ultramarine blue highlights on, well you could add a second highlight, very small very tiny little highlights at extreme light points with a skull white/ U-marines blue mix probably more on the blue then the white. I'm just trying to help with the darkness problem. Try that on a mini and tell us how it goes. Also put a white dot on your eye lenses and add detail to the chest eagle. Good luck Lord Mongol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190108-ultramarines-tactical-squad/#findComment-2253397 Share on other sites
UltraRich
They are looking good. Personally I like my ultras lighter but if you look at my earlier ones I didnt shade as much. Greatcrusade is right that the gold needs to be washed and highlighted. That will really give them some depth Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190108-ultramarines-tactical-squad/#findComment-2253514 Share on other sites
Lord Mongol
Thanks for the advice on the imperial insignia, greatcrusade08! sgtNACHO, the Blood Angels will come once I have an acceptable level of painted and playable Ultramarines, but they are still fighting for the next slot with Black Templars... So many Chapters, so little time... I agree with you on the use of the Badab Black wash. I think I'll try limiting my use of it on the next run. Which should be my command squad... Or, maybe I'll try to lighten these guys up first with secondary highlights! I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks for the input! Capt. Lysander
The blue is coming along quite well. Try to pick out more details on the face though.
