Hello brothers.

I have currently been playing GW Lord of The Rings Battle Game.

But now I want to make the switch to 40k and take my playing to the next level.

I have ordered the Rulebook (which is extremely expensive) and the SW Codex and can't wait to read them from cover to cover.

But I was wondering...what kits do I actually need to buy first.

I know that I want to start with Grey Hunters (20 will be enough and also be a great start to an army, right?) to form the base of army.

But I also know I want to have some options with those 20 (meltas, plasmas) but I have realized that the GW Space Wolves kits don't come with those weapon options.

So this may be a stupid question. But how do you all give some of your Grey Hunters special weapons and what extra kits would I need to do that with.

Also if you have the time could you please let me know what I should give each pack to 10, concerning weapons and such.

I hope that isn't too much.

I'm glad to be a part of the Brotherhood!

Your best option is to use one of the bit selling services to get the alternate weapons. Or buy a regular Tactical squad and mix in the parts.

In 2000 pts I use:

1 GH (x9) w/ Power Weapon, Plasma Pistol, & Flamer

2 GH (x9) w/ Powerfist, Plasma Pistol, and Meltagun

1 Blood Claws (x9) w/ Powerfist

Then add either a character or Wolfguard to each.

Yes you should be very ashamed of yourself! Asking a question to someone on the internet, shame on you sir!

No seriously though, I mostly agree with Crimson Devil, the differences come from play style which will be what you develop as you discover what you want each unit to do. Do you want your Grey Hunters to be equipped on the cheap or go all out? Will they ride into battle, fall from the sky or walk their way into battle? Will they be the core of your force or will you alternate with Bloodclaws? Do you simply want them to hold objectives while the rest of your army kills the enemy? These questions and more will help you to get an idea of how you will build your army. Grey Hunters are, arguably, the best Troop choice in the game and so you should naturally have them in abundance. The question becomes, once you have them what will you do with them. Hope that helps.

Oh not to confuse, but GH have the ability to take two special weapons (flamer, plasma gun, and melta gun). SO I would recommend buying one or two normal space marine tactical squads, and a space wolves pack to spread the wolfy bits throughout for your grey hunters. If you would like to switch all of your models from grey hunters to blood claws from game to game, use assault squads, and equip all of the models without upgrades with bolt pistols and chainswords, as they are the standard wargear for bloodclaws and grey hunters, except grey hunters also have bolters.
I'm not sure what the popular opinion is, but for a first purchase I believe you can't go wrong with the Space Wolves battleforce. Everything it contains is something you would want in nearly any size army, I'd go as far to say that it's one of the better battleforces out there.

yeah I was looking at that.

can't you make 20 grey hunters. 5 scouts with though.

or 20 blood claws.

or 10 GH and 10 BC

or whatever I want. haha.

so basically in a Grey Hunter Group, you can have up to 3 Special Weapons. Correct?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Any other tips or tricks or advice would be great.

the codex has everything your asking in easy instructions. once you get your hands on it, it will get alot easier for your choices.

and for the other weapons that dont come in the wolf sprue (melta gun or flamer) try one of the online bitz sites like CD said, or ebay.
