Loken86: Cheers mate, thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you like him :)

As for the purples... I only use 1. Liche Purple, Base coat of pure LP, then go over the edges with LP/Skull white, slowly mixing in more and more white.

On the chaplain I probably gave about 4-5 layers + base coat, and an extreme with pure skull white (very much water!)

Edemia: Thanks brother :) I didn't want the typical color ( blue ), and I usually go with a neon green, but since I have the green armour I figured I'd go with a color not often used, so presto! Purple it was. And it's a choice I'm glad I made.

Update!

I've been working on the bases of the terminators, finished the base for the Ven dread, and realised that I have way to many colors I need to buy new ones....

I'm fresh out of my foundation grays, my gold and I'm running low on white, black and bestial brown.

Did get around to build myself another Termie sergeant. Did some light kit-bashing with a spare termie-chaplain stormbolter I had laying around, a sergeant-crux arm, with a PA power sword. He also got a crux from the Ven dread kit on his other shoulderpad. The blood on the base needs a layer of 'ard coat to get it's shine going still.

And the metal ( on all the bases and dread ) are still on their first layer ( boltgun ).

But here we go! The group shot,

A stream of toxic goo that I played around with the painting a bit, pretyt happy with the effect.

The chaos guys. The yellow will be gold once I get around to buy some fresh paints. The fist was a bit of an experiment as I wasn't sure how to paint it, but I'm happy with the choice I made ( orange ).

The dreadnought. I'm pleased with how his fist turned out, did way more layers than I usually do ( probably around 7ish ) but it came out nice.

Thanks Loken :)

Decided I wanted to try something new, so I had a hand at freehanding for the first time ( well first time I did something serious )

The banner I'm planing on having a dragons skull breathing flames straight downwards, that then flow outwards (to the sides) and up the sides.

++ Huge thanks to manofmanynames for the great idea with the banner pic, cheers bro! ++

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Bannerfreehand003.jpg

Now I'm not sure if I want to go with green flames ( as I love green, and it's a very vibrant colour ) or if I want to go with purple, since all "energy" effects in the army are purple, power weapons, fists, plasma etc.

Whatever color I end up doing on the flames I will likely be doing the other color on the trim ( the raised edge ), the banner itself will be black, the wings and ornaments will be white, the "box" containing the skull will be black.

So what say you my friends, purple or green dragonsfire??? :)

Thanks TiH :)

Ok, so after an hour or so of sitting and contemplating the colors I finaly made up my mind. Since I use purple for all my energy effects and green for armour, I decided that it would tie in best with a green trim around the banner ( armour/shield ) and purple flamers ( energy ). If I did it the other way around it would constantly bug me. What is the energy part of the trim?? How come you hace green flames, yet only armour platings are green otherwise??

So after another hour of holding my breath while painting:

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Bannerfreehand009.jpg

Now the freehanding is done, but I still have to highlight the black, do all the whites ( symbols, wings, parchment etc ) and do the silver on the chains.

Here's how it looks on the bearer ( and since he isn't finished, some other guys for color reference ).

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Bannerfreehand010.jpg

All in all happy with how it's turning out :)

Cheers!

I got some possitive feedback about the banner when I posted it in the CotI thread, but nothing at all here? Oh well...

Gotten the whites done on the termies and the Ven dread, planing on getting all the metallics done tomorrow, as well as the reds ( lenses and purity seals ).

Pics tomorrow night probably.

You're making me blush like a virgin at prom night brother, thanks.

And yepp, time for more pictures!

After sitting for about 5+ hours Ive gotten som good stuff done today, the whites, metals and reds are all done, the black got a cleanup ( not the Ven dread though ) and the first layer of highlights on the greens are in place. What's left now are mainly the last highlight on the green, hte power effects ( fists and the sergs sword ) and then of course the black highlights ( and bases ). But I as said all out of gray so the black and bases will just have to wait another week or two.

Group shot ( ignore the stuff in the background :P )

The chaos twins ( still need to buy gold... )

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI009.jpg

Went with a 50-50 on the shoulder shield this time 'round. I tend to be so confused about what to paint on those darn things.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI006.jpg

Frigging love this figg! So much skulls it's marvelous :D

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI017.jpg

The dread is coming along nicely as well, I'm now happy I did the robe as it's coming out like I wanted it too.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI023.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI012.jpg

Thinking about painting flames in the "windows" on the legs ( normal red flames though, not purple ). What do you guys think?

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI022.jpg

Also went over the chaplain and did his metals. I also went over the whites again with a few more layers of pure white ( very much water ) and I think this is better.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI014.jpg

I will actually be doing his Crozius in purple as well ( as the fist ) to switch it up against my norm of doing them white. If I like it I'll do the same with the other I have primed.

And you guys know the drill, C+C are always warmly welcome.

Cheers!

The terminator with the power fist/ aux. grenade launcher is skulltastic. Now I have to try and find that arm so I can use it on one of my marines! The dread is looking very nice as well.

Thanks guys!

Got all the green highlights done and over with, and some more cleanup on the Ven dread. I also went over his legs and did some flames in the "windows".

I finally came up with what to do with the framing for those windows, as thats been bugging me for a while now. I'll be doing a mirror thing, black/green on one side, green/black on the other.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd3003.jpg

Also got the details on the banner done. Got a tip from a friend to do the wings with a purple shade instead of my usual brown, to tie them together with the flames. I was a bit sceptical but it actually came out nice. Added lettering at the bottom, as well as on the plate at the top. Fluff wise it displays the names of the ones who has carried the banner with honour before.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd3009.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd3012.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd3011.jpg

The boys are getting there! Only the greys left now, and those I can't do untill I get around the store to buy some more. I also did some flame-work on the banner bearers shoulder shield.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd3016.jpg

So frankly there isn't much more I can do for the CotI right now, but with 2 out of 3 things 90% done I feel I'm in good shape.

So I'll probably kill some time by working on the other 60+ terminators I have left to paint....

Cheers!

Loken: Sure, I'm just about to hit the gym, but once I get back, or tonight, I'll find an area that could use flames, and take some pics while doing them. And I'll throw them together into a tut :)

Ok, tutorial time! Sorry it took so long, I just got the pictures done and then I got picked up for dinner, but here is the tutorial for doing flame effect, sally players especially might have some use of this one. And if anyone wants this moved to the tutorial section just let me know.

Loken86, this one's for you :D

Alexanders "Flame" tutorial.

First off I will say that throughout the entire project you are better of using a lot of water in your paints. We will be doing quite a few layers on top of each other, so we don't want to end up with a 0.5" thick layer of paint on the model ;)

And since we're using red, that is a very covering color, we'll be fine with watered down paints. And with a lot of water in the paints it's also easier to get away if you mess upp. If you miss your mark, simly whipe you finger across real quick, and the paint should come off without leaving much of a trace. And please read the entire tut before you start as I do throw in some tips along the road that I use in all the steps.

Let's roll!

Materials.

I just go with a standard brush, if you like you can use a detail, but since this requires filling in some rather large areas with a solid color a standard works a bit better.

Here are the paints I use:

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial016.jpg

Mecharite red ( foundation )

Blood Red (GW standard )

Bad Moon Yellow ( No longer made, so go with Sunburst Yellow if you don't have it. )

Chaos Black (GW standard )

Skull white (GW standard )

'Ard coar ( no longer made, go with Gloss Varnish, same thing with a different name pretty much )

Step 1.

Water down some Mech red, first off we're outlining where the flames will be. Don't worry about filling the entire thing out yet, just do each "tentacle" by itself untill you're happy with the shapes. It tends to look best with a overly styalised look, very wavy, smooth edges. It doesnt look natural, but it looks good.

I did the lines for the "tentacles" by them selves first, then conected them and evened out the connections.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial002.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial003.jpg

Step 2.

Now we simply fill out the body of the flame with the same watered down Mech red. I try to leave the lines along the trim black, but we will be going back over these later again with black, so if you feel more comfortable with making a totaly covering layer go for it.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial004.jpg

Step 3.

Now we mix in blood red. Mix up a batch of 50/50 Mech red, Blood red. Now apply to the flame, but leave the very edges with only mech red, so about a 95% coverage.

It might not look like much is changing between step 2-4 but stay with me and you'll see, it is worth it.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial005.jpg

Step 4.

This time we go with pure Blood Red. Same as before, an almost-covering layer, leaving the edges of the mech/blood mix visable.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial006.jpg

Step 5.

Here is where we start chainging it up a bit.

Blood red and Bad Moon Yellow ( Sunburst ), the red is a much more dominant color than the yellow, so you will be wanting to go about 70/30 yellow/red or you'll just get a brownish red. With all the steps I do like I did with step 1, start with getting the outline for the "tentacles" right, THEN worry about the covering layer.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial007.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial008.jpg

Step 6.

Now we go up to about 85/15 Yellow/Red, this isn't exact measurement, so feel free to try out and mix them up however you like. I don't do fresh batches of mix, but instead I add in more yellow untill I get a shade I feel happy about. Do remember to clean the brush between shades though! What can happen is that you mix the paint with the tip of the brush, but in the bottom/core there is a blob of darker paint, like pure blood red. You don't want that to show up mid-stroke when you're doing a highlight.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial009.jpg

Step 7.

Ok folks, getting close to the end here. Fresh mix! Bad Moon Yellow ( Sunburst ) and skull white, about 50/50. This you want to apply at the bottom of the flame, only going up a little into the "tentacles". This is the white-hot center of the flame, but you still want the majority of the flame to be a shade of red.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial010.jpg

Step 8.

Final highlight! 90/10 white/yellow, this is the very bottom, the very core of the flame. So you want to mainly draw a line along the bottom for this one and only go up a liiiittle bit for each "tentacle".

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial011.jpg

Step 9.

Now just water down some chaos black and go over the edges. It does look a lot better if you try to get very sharp tips on the edges of the flame. So if it got a little like stump in the process, just go over with black and sharpen it up. Also round off the bottoms of the flames, between the tentacles, making it smooth and wavy. I also do a blacklining, meaning I go over the edge between the plate and the trim. This will create a straight frame for the flame, and it will look better when it has straight bottom and sides.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial012.jpg

Step 10.

I like to go over the entire thing with a layer of 'ard coat (gloss varnish). This adds the shine to the flame, and it smoothens out the transition between the different layers as well. And the paint can look a bit thick at first, the gloss does a lot to take that look away.

Plus it makes sure you wont scratch the flame off with a nail or by rubbing it up against something later on. Keep that flame burning!

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial013.jpg

That's it my friends! 10 steps to make all the flames you would like. Hope you all enjoyed the tutorial and that it helped you get some sweet fire burning brightly.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Flametutorial017.jpg

If anyone has any questions just post them here or PM me and I'll see what I can do to help you out.

Cheers!

Well the CotI terminators are put on hold as right now all I have left to do is the greys ( base, black highligts ) and I'm out of gray.

So instead I went back to a good old friend, mass producing terminators!

I did the purple ( power fist/sword ) on 17, and have started on the whites and greens on a whole bunch, as well as my magnetized arms for the heavy weapon terminators.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI-massproduction001.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI-massproduction013.jpg

I also dug through the bit-box and threw together a missile launcher for my Ven dread. A pretty simple and quick build, no greenstuffing needed, but I think it came out good. The base is from the hurricane bolter for the Ironclad ( which I never use anyways ) with a searchlight, a typhoon missile front and a bit of chain for effect.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI-massproduction003.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI-massproduction004.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI-massproduction007.jpg

This has since been primed and the first layer of green is on.

So honestly guys, is this thread so boring? :P

I get plenty of feedback from Loken and Edemia ( and you guys don't know how much I appreciate it. ) but other than that it tends to be a pretty slow pace. Now I know the basics are the same, termies, termies and more termies, so I try to throw in some new/other stuff in between to switch it up a little. So if you guys think I post too many pics, to often etc etc, don't hesitate to let me know what you think :D

If there is something in my posting I can change to make it more "visitor-friendly" I'd love to hear it ;)

Cheers!

Bumping this thread up from P. 4 in the WIP section with another update ;)

And first off is something that ISN'T in TDA!

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd4002.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd4006.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd4008.jpg

This used to be my least favorite chaplain, since his pose is so static, but the head actually makes up for a lot of it. Very much expression and dynamics there. And I'm happy with the effect the powerfist had on the pose as well. Very wip still as you all can see.

But of course I've also been working on my terminators :P

My progress as of the 11th

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI-massproduction001.jpg

Tonight.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd4013.jpg

Added the lightningclaw terminators I had left since I figured, why not? :P

I had an extra pair of terminator legs, a front upper body, but no back-upper body.. When in doubt, greenstuff it!

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotIupd4018.jpg

C+C as always welcome :D

Cheers!

Did some spring cleaning last night, spending a few hours organizing the desk and bookshelf and in general cleaning up the room. And I then found a plastic bag with a bunch of paints in it! I managed to revive a bunch of them and among those were a few grays, so I could actually finish the terminators and the dread.

So here we are, 8 out of the 10 CotI Terminators finished

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI1stcompfini003.jpg

The dreadnought, now ready to serve in batte once more

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI1stcompfini010.jpg

Still working on the custom missile launcher though

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/CotI1stcompfini011.jpg

I also put some more time into these two lovely chaps! Almst done, still need their backpacks and black highlights.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Heroes011.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Heroes012.jpg

Also found this guy when I was cleaning a drawer. Never got around to finish him, so I figured I might as well throw him into the mix. Only about 60% done

Vulkan

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Heroes022.jpg

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/Heroes023.jpg

Here is the crowd of death, aka the 1st Company, as you can see there are still plenty of terminators that needs paint. Many are about 80% done, but some have yet even to get black prime.

http://i938.photobucket.com/albums/ad224/Ash_Dragons/1stcomp001.jpg

And here is the bunch of termies that are finished! 43 in total, not bad, getting there

C+C Welcome!
