Special Weapons on MoTW

I'm glad this discussion was so long... for a while I was wondering how I was gonna model my MotW model. I was wondering on mb giving him a werewolf look, with the longer fingers and hairy face with over sized teeth... but thats not how they are at all... So cool. Now I dont feel bad having them use a gun.
I would just remember that a marine with MoTW is not the same as A Wulfen. That being said....Today I played a 1500 pt game against an Chaos player. At no time were any of my Greyhunter units under so much pressure that I was worried about loosing my Wolf Guard Leader, Melta Gunner, Standard Bearer, or MoTW model. I did have issues with my Scout unit as it was half the size. So if I were to add a Mark to my Scouts I think I would combine with my melta just because of the lack of bodies in that unit.

I stack banner/MotW/melta or plasma because it gives me a better chance of keeping those abilities/weapons alive for a longer period than if they were spread out. Fluffwise it could just be that the guy who uses the Meltagun has proven himself in battle as to be bestowed with the honor of carrying the squad banner, and at the start of the battle began to show signs the Canis Helix influencing his judgment moreso than usual. The battle-brother is able to keep it in check as long as he engages the enemy from afar, but Emperor help him if he reaches close combat.

Or, it's just tactically advantageous to give one model all of the items as long as you aren't facing a Vindicare/Telion. You can go either way.

Yes for me My MoTW never take shots, no pistols, no bolters, mine are not even modled to have them (again see my toehr post as my take on MoTW is differnt then then norm).

I didn't say it was cheating, I say I "FEEL" it is cheating, and as such would never do it. Much like messing around on your wife or GF, some people do and some don't I don't judge I just don't do it.

Like I said some things just feel wrong to me, and this is one of them. I won't fight over rules, the rules say you can do. Then again like I said the rules say that in 4th Ed you can have a termi sarge with your scouts. If you want to fight pure RAW then don't complaine when a Sgt. in Termi armor with a Sniper rifle with his scouts (This is making a point it can't happen in 5th ed now I think) kills your MoTW that has a Meltagun. That is all I am saying =)

Those who live in Cheese House should throw no Chedder!!!

Grey Hunters, Mark of the Wulfen, no Boltguns, Final Destination.

The current Fluff goes... "Mark of the Wulfen is a corruption of the Canis Helix that can cause the bearer to devolve into a killing mashine when the battle frenzy is upon him." C:SW pg62

These brothers aren't wild animals to be locked in cages. They're "Wolf-bitten." The beast within is a little stronger in them than others. Most of the time they are as calm and rational and thinking as the next Space Wolf. Sometimes they aren't. This is represented in the Close Combat Rules. Neither the rules OR the fluff make any penalty towards ranged attacks. In truth it would be easy to explain how a Marked brother comes to carry the units flamer since all Space Wolves hold to the same oaths, duties, and responsibilities, regardless if they're marked or not.

Cheers,

Pup

This exactly. My MotW models are simply "Wolf-bitten", as described in the Black Library books. To model them, I simply give them a unique shoulder-pad (or shoulder transfer in the case of my Wolf Scout) to help them stand out from their pack-mates. Other than going into a bit of a frenzy in close combat, MotW models are no more or less capable of fighting as a proper Space Wolves Marine than any other.

Typhus, I'll say right off you probably wouldn't enjoy playing me. And from what you've been saying, I sure wouldn't enjoy playing someone with your attitude. But I wouldn't go so far as to call it cheating. Please stick to saying you wouldn't enjoy playing someone that used (what you consider) unfluffy models. Most people react negatively to being called cheaters, even when it's obvious that they're not.

I personally dont feel you can, its nothing to do with fluff but rather how i read the rules.

All the options are listed under seperate headings and all start with 'One Grey Hunter'... to me that indicates that one model is allowed one of the upgrades, much like in the IG codex where you cant have multiple upgrades on a single model in the command squad.

you guys can read it how you want and hope you dont start a 'i never wana play you cos you dont agree with me' club. its your call, but to me you shouldnt do it.

Now that is a logical argument. Is there a precident in another codex that negates the ability to put items on the same dude?

If I read the SM codex, for example, it says things like "one OTHER model", etc etc. What about other 'dexes?

The point of this game is interpretations which is a good thing. I'm no personal fan of the mark but I won't complain or look down on someone who does, I just hope they don't look down on me for not sticking to pack markings/shoulder pad colour traditions. I won't be fielding models with the mark and shall include a small piece in my Lord's fluff about his concerns over those bitten.

Guard codex mentions it a few times:

One other veteran may:

Any remaining veterans that have not been upgraded with one of the options above may replace their lasguns with:

-pg 90 Company Command Squad

However I'm not sure comparing across codexes is such a great idea, it can be good for ideas but with different authors it can easily be changed, though I see no limitation currently.

You say you cast no judgment, yet your first post makes wild assumptions and accusations.

You "Can" but if you do , then your the same guy that put a Sgt. In Termi Armor with your scouts in 4th ed cause the codex said you could do that too...

If you want to win like that, that is all you. As a Wolf Player I have more honor then to pull something like this. I also try and live up to my Sagas, I don't mount Canis on a Titan Size base, I don't tug on supermans cape, and I don't spit into the wind...

It is not cheating. It is not bending the rules. In fact, the rules are quite clear on this. Any model may be given a special weapon (within restrictions of 1 per squad, or 2 if 10 strong), the wolf totem, and/or the mark of the wulfen. It is your choice if you want to stack all three, but keep in mind that if you are forced to allocate a wound to him and fail it, you lose all three items/abilities.

That you find issue with it is based on your preconception of the fluff, and nothing to do with the rules. And I agree whole-heartedly with Wildfire. The next time you feel up to posting such...emotionally charged posts, or levelling baseless accusations against other people (or any accusations of any type)...don't. It's the internet. Nobody cares.

Besides, read Wolf's Honour, by Lee Lightner (final book of the Ragnar Blackmane saga). Many MANY instances of "wolf-bitten" brothers still capable of rational thought and the ability to use ranged weapons, despite the curse of the Wulfen.

As to the OP, I would recommend against it, for the very reason that with wound allocation, one unlucky save could take out quite an expensive model.

I don't agree on there being a conflict between the fluff and the rules on this one.

MOTW is not Wulfen, he is a wolfbrother who is particularly ferocious in close combat, but otherwise capable of obeying orders and functioning within a pack.

I am very disappointed that this issue has raised allegations of cheating - more ale, fatter shield maidens and a shorter working week required
