Niiai
Hi, I am not sutch a fan of painting realistick (I have a backround from art history.) I have for a very long time wanted to learn how to paint my space wolves in eather a very limited palette like say the sin city comics or painting them as though they are in a particular light. But I thought it was imposible.... Until I saw these: Do you know how they got painted? These first where dipped: http://www.tabletop-terrain.com/ Aparantly you paint the genstealer the way you want first (or marine as it is for us) and then you dip it in the corect "lighting" (say we are fighting in dusk is a grey purple) But these others had my jaws dropping! : http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_oAuMNlv8D8c/SzOl...nstealers-2.jpg they are here ( a few scrollings down) http://andrathswargaming.blogspot.com/ Do anybody know how I can get a colour effect like that? Do I just paint them light and bath them in wash? Or do I have to make some spesial warnish? I know those two are genestealers on this forums, but I just want to learn the teqniques and use them on my space marines. :-) any sugestions? also, I was planing later on to go over with a light effect (from natural light sources like a searchlight or something) and then colour them in that colour. Any sugestions? :) Pretty please. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190494-painting-lighting-effects/ Share on other sites
Night Runner
There is an explanation on how the first batch of genestealers was painted. For the second batch I suggest leaving a comment on Andrath's blog. Usually bloggers are more than happy to give you a hand and dish out tips on how they do things. Here is a vid on dipping from the army painter. it should give you an idea how dipping is done. But I think it works better with organic shapes (genesteales, orks, skaven normal humans etc) than on symmetrical ones like TDA and Space marines. There are more vids on this subject, just type in dipping on youtube. Niiai
Yeah thanks. On teh youtube though I do not find any information on how to dip with colours. (The green once are colour dipped, making it look like they are in a forrest or something.) I would like to dip them in a purpely/blue shade. and afterwards drybrush higlight on eksternal lights like they are in a coridor. If you want to over paint like that you might want to consider using ink washes (GW do some blue ink washes from memory) rather than dipping. Dipping is typically the final coat and the products used can often be hard to paint over. In my case that green dip is a wood floor varnish which you can't over paint easily unless you use enamel paints (and they're a hassle to use imho). Niiai
Wow tabletop terrain! You shure replyed fast! And even created an acount just to comment on the subject, I am impressed! I realy like your moddels because unlike moast others models they are very realistick. The other models are painted as though they are very litt up, while your models looks like they are inside a creepy coridor. I do not consider them "slimy" like you sugested but rather that they are not fully iluminated. I would very mutch like to dop mine in a purple/blue warnish thats colours all the udner colours in a dark purple. This representing that the models are fighting at dusk (or inside a spacehulk that is very little litt.) I live in Norway so I do not understand exatly what product you dipped your figures in. It seems like you made your own. Am I right to asume that it is something used to keep wood from getting moast and eaten by fungus? I could perhaps head down to my lokal hardware store and get something to dip my models in. What I realy think makes your models is that you have also dipped the scenery, adding to the effect or the dark litted colours. The metald and the popes also are greenish. How could I go about doing this? ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190494-painting-lighting-effects/#findComment-2261294 Share on other sites
tabletop_terrain
Heh. I'm sure I used to have a B&C account too but couldn't remember the details :). Been a while since I've had the pleasure of painting Space Marines so I haven't been here for several years. Thanks for the compliments. I'm really just painting them as quickly as possible to a decent tabletop level! You can definitely do a blue 'dip'. Tamiya X-23 Clear Blue Enamel paint would be a place to start, but it's very light blue. You'll have to darken it down with some other enamel product or wood stain. I considered doing a custom blue mix myself for the Genestealers but tbh I've never really been a fan of the default Genestealer purple scheme, plus I already had some green dip mixed up for Zombies, so came up with my own colour scheme. The product I've dipped my figures in is basically a clear (untinted) Polyurethane 'moisture cured' furniture or floor wood varnish. I'm absolutely sure you'll be able to find something equivalent in your local Norwegian hardware store! My product is usually used to varnish plain wooden furniture. It is -not- water based, so you have to clean up with a solvent. So for my green dip I used a small tin of this varnish + a bottle of Tamiya X-25 Clear Green + a small amount of black oil based wood stain. The wood stain was to darken everything down so, otherwise it's too light. Find your products, mix them up slowly and test dip old figures you have until you've got a nice tone you like. Then start dipping! For anybody else reading, we're discussing Genestealers I've been dipping, they look like this: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4046/4274358855_2b6c80740d.jpg Tabletop Terrain - Wargaming and Modeling for Pulp, Warhammer, Mordheim and Flames of war Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190494-painting-lighting-effects/#findComment-2262215 Share on other sites
