Dusktiger's Salamander WIPs

so yet again, i'm shooting myself in the foot by making myself go back over ALL my guys (approx 3/4 of a company plus vehicles), to repaint them.

here's why. i took the paint scheme i was painting, and i mixed in the Viva Metallica method with it, and lo, it was good. i just painting them with a coat of Reaper's Emerald Green, and then doing the blacks in Adamantium Black. both of these are metallic paints. but the result, regardless of the number of coats, always looks a lil dull and flat, even on the couple i had gloss varnished.

the solution? i started going over the greens on one of my guys with 2 coats of Thrakka Green. i did it fairly thick; by that, i mean i'd tip the first half of a brush, a 1/8 flat brush, into the wash, and make about 3 strokes over an area, and repeat that til the whole surface is coated. then i let it dry and repeat that process for the 2nd coating. if i still feel the color doesnt look rich enough, i'll but a 3rd thinner coat, only re-dipping the brush for more every 4 or 5 strokes over the torso for example. if you do this on a metallic paint that's already the color of the wash your using, you dont need to start with a black wash first, since your basecoat mixed with the matching ink tends to already provide good depth of color. it also makes it look like the color's more pearlesant paint, in that the colors comming from "inside" rather than sitting on top like gloss paint on a car looks.

here's a couple photos of a Heavy Bolter to show what it looks like.

Now, his entire weapon assemply started with boltgun metal, and i did 3 coats of badab black on the bun casing. in the pics, it looks darker than in person.

the ammo feed belt i did one coat of devlin mud, and 3 coats of gryphonne sepia. again,t he camera makes it look way thicker and richer than it is in person. its more that dull but rich bronzey color jewelry comes in that music stores sell.

the ammo boxes in his pack were also done the same way as the gun casing, but with only 2 coats of black, and then i edged all the ridges with boltgun again.

his chest skull is boltgun, with 2 layers of sepia over it.

this is a shot of an older one i painted next to this new one. i can honestly say, my first one SUCKS in comparrison.

and here's a pair of torsos with the process finished on them. on the left is before the 2 coats of thrakka green, on the right is with the thrakka green.

my lamp was a little high, so i dont know if youll really see the difference in depth in the green, but in person its very apparant. my clubbers took one look at the test mini, and before even thuroghly looking at it and the rest of my army, just outright said repaint them all this way. i was at least expecting a 10 second delay before the verdict, but i guess in person its "that" obvious of a difference in quality. washes rock!

so i got a land speeder off a buddy that converted to space wolves yesterday. he only had the body built and had attached a pair of multi meltas to the wings and never finished it. so, i decided to armour of the cockpit to hid the lack of pieces, and this is what i got:

thanks! he didnt give me any of the other bits, so considering what i had to work with, i think i did fairly well freehanding all the measurements and beveled angles on the plasticard so they'd line up. there was some spots that messed up and i had to green stuff them and then sand them down, but otherwise im satisfied with it so far. although after making it, i'm thinking i should of made some recessed plates on the armoured section to mimic how it recesses in the nose.

while not part of my salamanders, i wasnt gonna post a new wip section for this guy alone. he's part of my Crimson Fist force list. this Chaplain will be attached to a 5 man vanguard squad with 2 powersword/bolt pistol marines, 2 thunderhammer/stormshield marines, and a sgt with a relic blade.

This was a nice change of pace since i'm getting tired of painting green. but now im debating what else to put into my crimson fist army. so far, i have a kantor, this guy, 5 man sniper scout squad with a missile launcher, 5 assault marines; sgt with a P.Sword, and 5 terminators; all special weapons magnetized for swap outs.
