Avenging Angels

I am a newb to 40k I have played WHFB for a few years but hadn't ever done anything with 40k until 2009. I decided to do 2 armies, space marines because they are just cool and Tyranids because everybody needs an enemy and to me the nids are the ultimate enemy. I have taken lots of ideas from others on here for modeling and painting. Thanks for the great ideas and hope you enjoy my minis. Oh and I have only played twice so I don't really know the tactics and rules so if I have modeled something that makes no sense please let me know!

Most of my marines use parts heavily from the DA chapter and the BT chapter. I love the ravenwing models and wanted to incorporate as much of the angels and Iron crosses into my work as possible. First unit to get worked on is a unit of bikers.

Okay I have two bikes completed. These are my test paint jobs. If they work out good I will be doing 12 or so more. Until then here are some pics of the Lanspeeders I have been working on. No paint yet because the humidity has been too high to do any quality spraying. Just conversions.

Here are some of the landspeeder variants that I have been working with. I didn't like the way the gunner in the original model is holding a gun that points into the sky when what he is shooting would primarily be on the ground. So all of my gunners are holding the triggers which are mounted as part of the ship. All guns are electronicly controlled by either the pilot and/or the gunner. I think this has more visual appeal and gives more room for conversions. All of the weapons and men are magnatized so they can be changed out for different weapon loads.

This model is meant to be the leader of a tank hunter unit with three spotlights, an oversized melta gun, and chin mounted heavey flamer. The gunner is taking a pot shot one handed with his bolt gun.

This variant uses sponson heavy bolters from a razorback. A tornado variant. Again everything could be changed out so any weapon loadout is possible.

Thanks to other B&C folks for the conversion idea.

This was originally planned to be my master of the ravenwing model and will still be if I use Dark Angels rule set. Otherwise I could run this as a LS Tempest from forge world rules. I switched the missile launcher around to be horizontal instead of vertical because I thought it looked better and gave the model a lower profile. Also looked kind of like a star wars X wing fighter like that so that was fun.

I am really debating which reference to go with (rolls a d6)...

...So, are you landspeeders going to "sneak up and hit you like a F@#*in' Tornado?"

I like the variants, i like the extra gubbins, and I like the way you explained your artistic reasoning behind it.

nioce work.

only question is, they ARE on tornados? where did you get them? :D

aRgh! i should have said "Are they Land speeder tornadoes?" Get it? ;D

Here are two that are pretty much finished with only a few touchups from painting battle wounds needing fixed.

LOL thanks for the comment. The landspeeders needed something to sit on because of the thing that hangs down so I had some air elementals that I was working on near by and got drafted as bases. I picked them up from the mini company "magnificent egos."

I grew up in the North West near Yellowstone Park and have always loved the red tailed hawk so it was the basis for my color scheme. So my army will have a "hawk wing," rather than raven wing.

Thanks Hertz! If you have any ideas please feel free to comment. I know what you mean though about not having much to say. I was on here for a year before I said anything! Right now I am just trying to finish the rest of the unit. I have 12 or so other bikes. Plus I am working on 4 Attack bikes, a couple of rhinos and a LRR.

Thanks, I have been studying the Polish Winged Hussars. I really liked the dual look of the wings over their shoulders. So I wanted to replicated that look.

Don't want you all to think I have just been resting. I am trying to do two full squads of 8. I wanted my weapon upgrade bikes to be unique so I have them seperate from the regular bikes. The weapon upgrade bikes have their special upgrads mounted on the bikes, and they have the more elaberate winged fairing. I felt that this helps qualify the BS of a bike mounted space marine. Also I noticed that many of the weapons are set to be in the riders right hand. On a normal motorcycle this is the throtle hand and by holding a gun would make it almost impossible to drive and shoot. The left hand is a cluch hand but since these bikes don't appear to have a cluch I am okay with a left handed weapon. The bikes are equiped to have driver controled bolters that are mounted it made sense to me that other weapons would be too.

I have just started on these bikes but wanted to share what I was working on in between posts.

One of the things I didn't like about the standard GW attack bike is that the way the sidecar is attached without any fairing in front of the pintle weapon if you went over debri, brush or even mud it would end up right in the marine's lap. Also it seemed to leave the gunner very exposed from the front to ememy fire unlike the drive who has good armor coverage.

So I added on my own fairings to the side car to make it look more like a real sidecar and to give the added protection I felt was missing. We'll see how weill it goes.

Anyway like I said I just started painting these so they are not very far along.

I think it is from total war, I just searched Polish Winged Husar on Google pics, but it was a great representation.

I had a lot of fun with the attack bikes. I decided to strap the heavy bolter on the fender of two of them to show it as an alternate but left one without just for randomness.

All of the bikes have extra bags, weapons, ammo, etc. My Idea on this was that they are regularily on extended missions away from the slower tanks.

The artistic reasoning and fluff or backstory of the units is very important to me. I want my models to be similar enough to work with the game but individual enough to give them their own identity. I started with a biker unit because I have ridden bikes for over 20 years so they are close to my heart. I pick themes that I feel people can connect with because it makes the model more of a believable entity than just a chunk of plastic with some latex paint slathered on.

After all you spend tons of time and money on these things there should be more reaons in the way they are made.

Thanks for your comments!

Very nice work so far, I like all the little details and baggage you have added to the bikes.

With regards to the fairing on the side car, it looks like you added the normal fairing that the bikes bolters are mounted on and filled the gaps. Is this the case, if not, do you mind sharing how you did it?

Cheers, ID

"Wow nice stuff, i really like how you where inspired by where you live and your favorite animals. Its nice to see that. Im sure that if we all look deep into our armies we will all find some reference to where we come from."

Bro Mordeus, I totally agree with you. In fact I looked at other armies that I have in the fantasy line and saw that even though the intention was not there directly they all have a connection to my roots.

Ironduke,

The fairing is the standard one that normally goes on the bike. I cut a thin piece of plasticard and glued it on after trimming off the headlight. After it dried I trimmed it carefully with a razor to match the lines of the fairing. I attached it to the sidecar and once dry attached another piece of plasticard to the bottom of the fairing to make it match up with the sidecar.

Super easy conversion. It could probably use some tweaking to make it look cleaner but it works okay. If I build another one I will try to take a step by step process.

Although these bikes are not complete like I had hoped they would be by now I wanted to do an update.
