Totally cheesy home made fluff (for my 13th co)

well i wrote this piece to start off a new campaign im starting with some friends after a long time of non-gaming.

it follows along with a pet theory of mine about how the 13th co operate in the eye. my take is that the Great Hunts are not really just about "trying and failing to find Russ" (disregarding the collateral good often achieved) but actually undertaken in large part to attempt to resupply the warbands and elements of the 13th co that the Hunt comes across. (as well as try to catch up with Russ). this would obviously be misunderstood by most officials in the Imperium (<_<:? your suppliyng ARMS to the EoT??), and is a closely guarded secret amongst the Space Wolves.

My Warband is not from the times of the heresy, but much more recent, though they carry all the hallmarks of the 13th proper. anyway heres the story, please tell me what you all think ( this is my first attempt at fluff writing, and i DID warn you about the cheese :D)

please enjoy.

Fjernar's Void Hunters

The Void Hunters, as Wolf Lord Fjernar Thorvald's great company has come to be known, last walked the halls of the fang in 736.M40.

It was during Great Wolf Durfast Quicksight's Great Hunt that Fjernar and his men disappeared from Imperial record.

Three decades after leaving Fenris, and deep inside that blighted region of space known as the Eye of Terror, Fjernar had managed to bring to bay Meliadus the Damned. A Daemon-Prince of Khorne, Meliadus had sacked and decimated three Imperial merchant planets on the outskirts of Scarus Sector, slaughtering the populations in the name of the Blood-God and gaining possession of several extremely powerful artifacts supposedly created during the days of the Great Crusade. Hearing of Meliadus' attack and departure days before the Space Wolves fleet entered the Eye, Great Wolf Durfast split Fjernar's company from the original Hunt to track down and end the life of this butcher of worlds. The chase proved long and difficult, and the Space Wolves had once almost lost the trail entirely during this time.

It was only a dream experienced by Fjernar that enabled him to track the traitor to the warp fouled planet of Murdros. Fjernar had dreamt of a great pack of wild wolves battling half a dozen gore-covered Ice Trolls. Two stars, one blue and one red, dominated the black sky and threw a hellish hue upon the battlefield, and amid the roaring cacophany stood a power armoured figure who could only be Russ himself. Untouched by the violence surrounding him Russ turned toward Fjernar, looked straight at him, and gave the Wolves handsign to attack.

Upon waking, Fjernar immediately sought the counsel of the Rune Priest Volmir and his ships Bellisarian Navigator. Indeed the dream had been a true one, the Astropath already new of a star system matching the dreamscape that was within a mere 2 days travel and Ancient Volmir could feel no touch of chaos in Fjernar's mind. Rather Volmir detected traces of an exceptionally powerful and fierce will lingering in Fjernar's psyche.

Three days after the dream Fjernar's company had made planetfall and caught up with the Traitor Legion. Meliadus's heretics were based high up on a plateau in a mountain range south of the planets equator, and the Wolf Lord was ready to assault. Things, however, did not go to plan.

The Wolves had found their quarry, but instead of engaging the enemy, they found themselves watching the chaos forces leaving their posts and heading away from the Wolves position! It could hardly be a withdrawal for Fjernar had made certain the enemy should stay unaware of their presence, and to the observers it appeared that Meliadus's forces were attacking the centre of their own position!

Never one to look a gift ice mammoth in the mouth, Fjernar set his forces on upon the enemy, and charged forward slaughtering a great many traitor marines and twisted daemon worshippers, working his way throughout the lightly fortified base until cresting a hill... and stopping midstride.

Before him, across numerous enemy marines, like something out of his old tribes' legends, he saw the daemon prince Meliadus and no less than five monstrous Bloodthirsters battling hard with a large band of strange but nonetheless recognisable Space Wolves. The armour of the strange brothers appeared to be extremely old, and quite roughly maintained, but the warriors themselves fought with a fury to awe even Fjernar and his men. Howling and roaring, the warriors were taking the fight to the Bloodthirsters in an avalanche of claws and teeth, flinging themselves forward to rend the daemons' flesh apparently without weapons, and totally without any sense of self preservation.

Recognizing Wulfen, more Wulfen then he had ever seen in one place before, Fjernar laughed out loud in battle glee and threw himself again into the fray. Cutting his way towards the nearest bloodthirster, the wolf lord was forced to step back as one of the grey clad warriors was thrown clear of a daemon and came flying into the backs of several traitor marines facing Fjernar.

Slaying the Renegades and clearing the immediate vicinity, Fjernar grabbed the armoured shoulder of the fallen warrior and with a whirr of servos pulled him to his feet. “Thank you, little brother.” Grated the feral apparition in an accent Fjernar could only liken to that of the great Bjorn's, and snatched Fjernar's Frost Axe from his surprised grip. “Keep up.”

Curiosly unfazed by this gross disrespect for his rank, Fjernar signalled his wolfguard and leaped forward, pulling his trusty Kraken-tooth dagger as he ran to keep up with the warrior.

Slashing heads and limbs off the confused chaos marines with brutal lethality, the feral warrior cleared a path to the group of Bloodthirsters, with Fjernar leaping the fallen in his wake, and without pause sprang up on a Daemons' back brutally burying the axe right between its shoulders.

The daemon fell bellowing and Fjernar lost sight of the feral one, dodging sideways from the path of an axe almost as tall as himself. Steeling himself, the Wolf Lord dashed behind the stinking hellspawn, slashing the beasts tendons with two efficient swipes of his dagger, crippling the foe. Two bolt pistol rounds between the eyes ended its fury. Another daemon lunged at Fjernar with its massively clawed hand missing by inches. Jurgen seized the opportunity and leaped straight at the warp-beasts throat, krakens tooth outstretched, and slammed the blade home. That one died without a sound.

Suddenly, the wolfguard Thorfinn appeared grinning beside his lord, covered brow to boots in other peoples blood, followed by the larger part of his squad. Pausing to assess the battle, Fjernar could see his Company had smashed the Traitor marines. A fairly unsurprising feat given the advantage of surprise, still it sent a quiet surge of satisfaction through Jurgen. The Space Wolves know better than most the importance of seeing the job through to the end however, and the real target was yet to be defeated: The Daemon Meliadus.

Scanning the field ahead, the Wolf Lord received reports from from his squads. Jurgens men were tearing apart the base, disassembling weapons and looking for any useful information or supplies. In a split second, Fjernar found the earth rising to meet him, but instead of smacking into decaying, diseased tundra grass, his face paffed into a heavy blanket of snow. Pulling himself to his feet and looking about, the first thing Fjernar noticed was that the light had changed, then he noticed the smell, and the horizon! Mountains blocked his view, as if he had been fighting in a valley not a plateau, and the air was as clean and cold as that on Fenris.

The corpses of the dead, Bloodthirsters included, were still where they fell, Thorfinn and the other wolfguard were sprawled around him and yet he was surely standing on another planet! Fjernar sent queries out to the rest of his forces, and all squads confirmed. Fjernar's entire company, along with the bodies and buildings of a four square kilometer battlezone had been picked up and moved!

“There he is.” growled a thick voice. Fjernar turned to see the strange Wulfen warrior approaching him, frost axe in hand. The warrior stopped and held out the axe. “Good weapon, good for the big prey.” Fjernar received the axe, and started to ask the warrior his name, but a glance past the warriors shoulder stopped him cold.

Standing off to Fjernar s right were four Runepriests of truly chilling visage, each more hard bitten than the last, and one truly massive warrior, all of 12 feet tall, standing in the centre of the Priests. The warrior was gripping the severed head of the daemon-prince Meliadus by the hair, and strode forward to cast the trophy at Fjernar s feet. “Here he is, almost got away. Wasn't expecting our little surprise though. No need to chase him further now! Hah! I have the old mans trinkets too!” The warrior opened his other hand to reveal a collection of pendants set with golden gemstones.

The warrior gestured to the Rune Priests. “Here. Take one each, they will make the larger ones easier to handle, if I am right about what they are. I never did pay much attention to the baubles.”

“Thank you Great King,” said one of the ancients, “they will certainly help make the jump smoother!”

The giant had already turned to face Fjernar once more. “Well, you have found me, and you have found the true war. You have proved yourself worthy of your name, Space Wolf. You will tell me stories of my homeland when we return to the Lair, but for now, get up and gather your men. We move!”

Fjernar didn't know when he'd dropped, but he was on his knees in the snow, tears of adulation streaming down his face into his beard. The first time he'd cried since he was a child. It had seemed impossible. But he had known all along.

RUSS LIVES!!!

RUSS DOES NOT LIVE!!!

I would really avoid trying to bring back old Leman. Even the Established Fluff cannot decide if he went with the 13th Company or left later. He may not even be alive. But you have spoiled the mystery.

The fluff is pretty clear that Leman left long before the 13th vanished. They supposedly went after him to find him from the GW standpoint...

So it really is a mystery if russ is alive and it might be better to keep it that way. I would easily accept him having visions but actually fleshing out the primarch is a little over the top.

It's not canon, so I don't worry too much about Russ' fate (though if you think something out there has killed him, well... you should maybe start painting some dress wearing pansies, or sparkling vampire marines) but I found myself grinning through the story. I like it! I know I'm probably missing something obvious, but what were the golden gems?

The 13th Company pursued Thousand Sons forces into the Warp on Prospero, near the beginning of the Heresy. Russ did not go on his journey until a few years after the Emperor fell.

thanks for your comments guys, yeah i know the Russ bit is dodgey  , but its just a fun tale to add flavour to me and my friends games, and i couldnt resist twisting the knife a little in my BA playing friends guts. (ol' Sangas dead after all). and as was said, its hardly canon hehe ;) the golden gems are tiny personal teleport devices. the 13th USED to have the Gate power (which i loved) and even tho its gone now, my army still uses a version of it in storyline to move whole forces to new locations, and with the gems they are able to do it safer and bigger! (so that as my army grows my method of travel stays the same) since their in the Eye, i dont like the idea of them cruising around in a battleship, to much to go wrong in space. tho i guess the same can be said for jumping thru the warp. oh well. i like it :)

Im glad some of you enjoyed the read, it was alot of fun to write and i recommend it to those who have not tried to write out thier ideas yet!

thanks for reading :(

Edit: forgot to add a point about timing, im personaly not bothered about the timing of who went first into the warp, as we know time moves differently there, and i can see no reason not to have Russ meet up with his boys some time after both have entered the eye. Also i dont think there was a mystery, i believe Russ lives and is fighting the good fight in the daemons very own home grounds.

Cheers B)

Wrong. 13th were ordered by Russ to follow 1k Sons after the Battle of Prospero.
