Lysimachus
Hi all, Edit: The Iron Gauntlet Challenges Well, now I'm done with painting my Emperor's Blade, I'm starting to do some models for one of my other DIY's, the Iron Gods (Index Traitoris is here if anyone's interested in the fluff side of things). Going to be using a mix of SM, CSM and a few of the more 'piratey' SW bits to show their more 'irregular' nature (will also be counts-as SW, so I'm covered there! ;) ) Anyway, here's the pic of the first mini, few spare bits I threw together so I could start working out the colour scheme: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/IronGod1.jpg C+C on scheme or anything else would be very welcome and appreciated! thanks Lysimachus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190712-iron-gods/ Share on other sites
Captain Mike
I think more angles are needed for a full picture, but; Very nice conversion. Good kit bashing Like the bronze gun, not often you see that The basing could do with some excitment. A nice model, would look good across an army. Brother Argent
I watched these guys develop in the Liber not I will watch them develop here. Love the scheme BTW, perhaps needs a little more "ooomph" with the body, although I'm not sure how you could go about achieving such a thing, maybe battle damage or somthing. I don't know. I always love watching oyur WIPs, always good, clean and neat models. Looking forward to seeing more. Lysimachus
Thanks very much for comments guys! @Capt.Mike: Thanks! Yeah, I think you're right about the base, maybe a wash and/or a quick drybrushed highlight? Only a rank and file trooper so don't want to go overboard! @SP: Again, thanks! Hope this isn't viewed as cheating on the Iron Gauntlet Painting Challenge! :tu: Agreed on the body, several of them will have a defaced Imp. Eagle in a brighter colour, probably a light bone, think that will help. cheers Lysimachus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190712-iron-gods/#findComment-2262807 Share on other sites
Kid Famous The Punch
The color scheme is a bit...dark? I'm not really sure if it's dark green or brown or grey or blue? I think it's grey. It's not a terrible color scheme. It just seems like you could liven it up a bit, there's hardly and contrast in value. Since all the colors are almost the same value. I'm not trying to be rude. If you like the color scheme I'd say do what you want. But, It seems like it will be a kind of sedated force when it's done. Nothing's really popping on the model right now. You could try adding a brighter shoulder pad? Or maybe putting brighter red kneepads (Red and Grey? Right?) Or something to break up the grey blob. You seem like a pretty solid painter, and you could make a few small changes to make this a really neat color scheme ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190712-iron-gods/#findComment-2263262 Share on other sites
Lysimachus
Ok, another update, did a wash on the base, think it works better as the darker base makes the highlights on the minis stand out more; plus second test mini done, melta gunner: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/IronGod2.jpg http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/IronGod3.jpg @Kid: Thanks, to be honest I'm going for quite a gritty, realistic (as far as you can with a group of futuristic, genetically engineered, 8 ft tall killers, obviously! ;) ) look, as it fits better with the fluff I've come up with. That being said, I'm going to add the red on various parts of the minis once I get some more together, plus adding in the more 'wild' bits from the SW sprues should make them more interesting! C+C welcome! Lysimachus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190712-iron-gods/#findComment-2266927 Share on other sites
Brother Argent
Yes, looking good. Glad to see a bit of contrast with the aquilla. I also like the different panelling with the red. Good stuff, keep it up. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190712-iron-gods/#findComment-2267335 Share on other sites
Lysimachus
Thanks SP! Yeah, fairly happy so far. Unfortunately not going to get any more minis in time to sign up for LPC (can't pick up til at least 20th Feb). Oh well, will have to save them for the Iron Gauntlet! Any more C+C? Boy Miller
Your test minis look great, I think the melta gunner looks slightly better. Think the head on the first one looks slightly unfinished (could maybe do with a highlight on the brows/cheeks or paint the wires?) Very nice job on the eyes tho! Lysimachus
Thanks bro, yeah, think the chest eagle adds a splash of colour? Not everyone will have one but think having a few through the squad will really add to their overall look. Anyway, quick update, third and final test mini done: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/IronGod4.jpg not entirely happy with his face, paint blobbed a little while I was doing it, but only a test job and will end up in a squad at the back of the army so... with another group shot: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/IronGod5.jpg C+C still requested and very welcome! Fire Lord Captain
NIce mini's! This is just how I like my traitor marines, not too different from SM's but they look evil! (Unless they are plague marines then the dirtier and more guts the better) Very nice job! Lysimachus
Well, now the second of the Iron Gauntlet Challenges has begun, I can really get started on these guys! So, some pics of my first squad (counts-as GH): http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/Squad1-1.jpg and a couple of close ups: their leader (c-a WGPL) http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/Vet.jpg the squad banner (c-a wolf standard) http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/WS.jpg and finally a close up for my buddy Ace Debonair. His Stonebound Chapter are based relatively closely to my Iron Gods (galactically speaking :P ) so I couldn't resist turning one of his brave boys into a traitorous pirate! http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/StB.jpg C+C very welcome, thanks for looking! Ace Debonair
 Cool! He looks like a despicable sort of chap, doesn't he? I knew I should've should have killed him when I had the chance... oh well, there's always the next battle. :D The rest of those guys look damn cool too. Especially looking forward to seeing Talek Varn take to the field. EDIT: Edited again because I had Varn's name right the first time. D'oh! Lysimachus
Thanks very much for comments guys! I thought you'd be happy with the beginning of the second challenge. Delighted, I've been itching to get started properly! Especially looking forward to seeing Talek Varn take to the field. Yeah, I've worked out a plan for him bits-wise, will be mostly a SM/SW TDA mix with the Chaos Lord TDA, plus a fair bit of GS work too! Keep your eyes peeled as I'll probably update soonish with the modelling of the TDA vets and Varn, then I can spray everything all at once. cheers Lysimachus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190712-iron-gods/#findComment-2315299 Share on other sites
trautz
nice conversions and good painting, but i would suggest to paint over the sand at the base, it will look more connected to the model after it great work! Lysimachus
thanks trautz, the bases are supposed to be desert themed, plus they match my other army (see 4th Co. link in sig) Bit of an update, been able to get the TDA Iron Gods veterans together, a mix of SM, SW, CSM, even a few DA bits: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/TDA1.jpg http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/TDA2.jpg http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/TDA3.jpg any C+C are very welcome! Lysimachus
No bites on the termi's, eh? Never mind, next update: Had some time to work on the leader of the Iron Gods, Talek Varn (not a nice guy, if you're into fluff can read more about him in the Iron Gods IT, link is in the first post). Anyhow, in game terms he was originally supposed to be a Wolf Lord in TDA but once I'd added on the points for Frost Axe, Saga of the Bear, and all the other stuff I wanted he was well over 200 pts, so I decided I might as well re-jig my list, make him a counts-as Logan Grimnar, and have all the bits I wanted plus lots of other stuff and benefits to the rest of the army, all for only a small points increase. Therefore, in modelling terms I decided I'd do him with Axe/Power fist with inbuilt SB to represent Logan's SB/Axe Morkai. Now, I was always planning to use the Chaos Lord’s axe as it’s very cool, but I couldn’t find any right-handed TDA power fists for the other side. So I’ve chopped up the Chaos Lord lightning claw and a PA PFist, mixed, added GS, then chopped up a SB to mount on it! Also, I love the Co. Champion shoulders and wanted to use one here, but they’re not big enough. However, if you put a slit in the pad in the middle bottom you can bend it to fit. Then was just a case of GS’ing in the gap and also bringing the outer pad down slightly lower! GS work looks slightly bumpy in the pics but it’s OK, think it’s just colour variations where it’s sanded down. Should be fine when it’s got some paint on it! Anyway, pics! http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/Iron%20Gods/Varn1.jpg http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/Iron%20Gods/Varn2.jpg http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/Iron%20Gods/Varn3.jpg C+C would still be very welcome indeed! Lysimachus
Hello, hello... is this thing on...? :) Ah well, never mind, for my own gratification, here's another update: Decided I needed a lower level character for small games and having looked at a few different threads figured you can't go wrong with a (counts-as) Rune Priest. Thankfully my brother (BoyMilla, you may possibly have seen his awesome Iyanden Eldar in the Warseer Tale of 40K Painters) had an old Librarian he said I could use. It's a nice model with some good details but I didn't really like the pose so... quick hack and glue later: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd11/simoncherylm/RP1.jpg going for as much full MK VI as possible, so filed a pad from the SW sprue (one or two pads already only have trim on the lower edge of the pad so made it quite easy), also did some of the classic 'toes' on the feet. Unfortunately realized I'd used my last studded pad for the other side :D so I need to find one somewhere.... Also did the standard guitar wire pipes from hood to back. Once I get him finished I'll spray everything and then start painting! C+C still very welcome! Lysimachus
Thanks very much for comments guys!(Is it really weird how pleased I am that Brother Argos himself posted in one of my threads?! B) ) @Terminatorinhell: Yep, Skirax is quite right, it's from the SW sprue. Side point if you're wanting to use it, it's the one where the neck join isn't scooped out (to match the couple of flat bottomed heads on the sprue). Worked well for me as I had the flat base from cutting the Libby head off. Thanks again!
