mis3q
This is my first tutorial so I hope it will come in handy for you all:) Introduction: For some time I was fighting with myself to buy two boxes of chaos raptors. But it still almost £25 for only 5 guy's (damm You GW) and furthermore I don't think GW will release a plastic sprue any time soon:/ I know, I know I can do conversions using jump pack's out of Assault Marines or use wings out off the Possessed sprue but really for me the jump pack's just don't look to chaotic to me and the wing on the other hand look great but I won't buy a box of Possessed only to get 2 pair of wings and even if I would like to buy them in a bitz shop or ebay they are still very hard to get and not cheap:/ But I found a third opition and I hope You will like it:) Things we will need: A pair of Tyranid Gargoyle wing's Chaos Backpack Plastic Cutters Hobby Drill (1mm drill) Hobby Knife Paper clip Super Glue Green Stuff Modeling Tools 1.) The first step is to take a pair of Gargoyle wing's from the sprue and with the help of a hobby knife clean it from the mold lines. http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/2667/img2798aj.jpg http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9017/img2802d.jpg 2.) Now take the hobby drill and with it drill a hole where I did just be careful not to drill on the other side. http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/5820/img2806wj.jpg http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3659/img2807.jpg 3.) Next You should take the paper clip and straighten it out so You could place the one end of the paper clip in the drilled hole. Before You will place the paper clip in the hole remeber to add a litle bit of super glue in there. http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/6263/img2811.jpg http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/9151/img2810.jpg After the whole process cut of the paper clip about 0,5 cm from the edge of the wing. http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/863/img2813qi.jpg 4.) Repeat the steps 1.) 2.) and 3.) for the other wing. 5.) The next step is to take the Chaos Backpack and with the help of a hobby knife, cut it like I had on the pics below. http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/5046/img2821s.jpg http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9074/img2823l.jpg 6.) Using the hobby drill make a hole in the backpack like shown in the picture and then do the same on the other side. Try to drill the hole in a little angle http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/6459/img2824t.jpg http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/5492/img2825z.jpg Note that You can use the paper clip or the drill to stretch the hole a little bit so when You will attach the wings You will have also more options of moving them and placing them where you like. http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/7415/img2826a.jpg 7.) Give a litle bit of super glue in the backpack holes and then attach the wings. http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/5637/img2827.jpg Now the Wings will hold much stronger then when You would attach them only with super glue. It will also help in the modeling green stuff process. 8.) Using green stuff, water and modeling tools fill the gaps between the wings and backpack. After that start sculpting green stuff so the wings would look like there were attached to the backpack by some form of flesh. Remember that when You are sculpting green stuff You should always have your modeling tools dipped in water before you start to sculpt. http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/1538/img2839z.jpg http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6668/img2840e.jpg 9.) Now the only thing left to do is to find the model You want the wings on:) I hope You liked my first Tutorial and if You have any questions just post them and I will be happy to answer:) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190863-how-to-make-backpack-wings-tutorial/ Share on other sites
Storm Hawks Legion
thank you and congrats on posting, I have been thinking of trying this but couldn't come up with anything other than a full GS sculpt, and I'm very bad with GS so thank you and do you have any recommendations on where to get cheap feathered wings with which to try this on my loyalists? Solid Zaku
The cheapest wings you're going to get are going to be the Eagle Wings pack from the WFB Wood Elf line. They're metal, so it'll be a bit rougher working with them. What I would recommend is to actually shave the nib that juts out of them to an appropriate thickness. mis3q
I'm very bad with GS so thank you and do you have any recommendations on where to get cheap feathered wings with which to try this on my loyalists? I think I found the perfect feathered wing click here!! They are made from resin and it will be easier to work on them. Erm... Why would loyalists have mutations like feathered wings? On topic: Awesome work. I was thinking about doing something similar. Do you think salt dipping to reposition the wings shape would work or is the wings themselves to flimsy? Storm Hawks Legion
Erm... Why would loyalists have mutations like feathered wings? Sanguiness? (sorry about the spelling BAs) and an old idea from one of my chapters that died, but it stuck with me. I'm not against the idea, I'm just curious. Something like that looking organic looks like a mutation to me. Well, to be fair, the Space Wolves and Blood Angels chapters both have mutations in the gene-seed. Also, take a look at the Saint Celestine model. She's got feathered wings and exists in the friggin Witch Hunters army list. I don't see why a Space Marine force closer to Sangunius' Gene-Seed couldn't justify wings on specialist assault troops without being purged. My thought process was I thought the BA were already under scutiny for their whole vampire thing, so I thought wings would just add to the =I='s intolerance. Shaun Carlin
Very very nice, It may very well spell death for those blasted metal raptors that keep headbutting the table if you know what I mean Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/190863-how-to-make-backpack-wings-tutorial/#findComment-2272929 Share on other sites
