Joasht
I haven't gone through, nor have I truly kept up with the latest version of the Nids codex, and am to face against them in a small 750 point game soon and I will be using my Space Wolves. Anything that I should look out for? What have you guys found to work against them? Thanks! Grey Mage
Look out for Warriors- those things are nasty in small-mid point games, with three wounds. My reccommendation? Take a pack of LFs with MLs specificly for them, switch to frags if he goes gaunt heavy. Take a couple of Plasma-Hunter packs, powerfists in each, and a cheap HQ to lead them- probly a Rune Priest. Whirlwind for some extra firepower couldnt hurt, maybe a typhoon for speed instead. Razorbacks help alot too. Wolf Guard Nostromo
My reccommendation? Take a pack of LFs with MLs specificly for them, switch to frags if he goes gaunt heavy. Take a couple of Plasma-Hunter packs, powerfists in each, and a cheap HQ to lead them- probly a Rune Priest. I couldn't agree more with all that GM has said here, but this particularly - the combo of plasma hunters and missile long fangs backed up by the odd powerfist will have them running back to the swarmlord with their numerous tails between their numerous legs :) A combo which works against just about anything as it happens too... commander alexander
Expect Genestealer Broods, as they do not need to be in synapse range, which is quite a limiting factor in small games, genestealers are no slouches as I am pretty sure you know. Massed bolter fire will kill them with no saves (AP5 Vs. Sv5+), as will it almost any unit in the codex so I wouldn't worry too much about taking plasma, the long fangs should be plenty for anything better.Rune priests will most definitely suffer from certain tyranid powers, I would recommend a wolf lord with either saga of the beast slayer, or saga of the bear, as many units can now take bone swords which are power weapons and can cause instant death. If you have more particular questions, I do have the new codex, so feel free to ask. lordsloth
I agree that long fangs will be the key to victory. They can take chunks out of hordes with frags, savelessly oneshot warriors and consistently drop saveless wounds on most of the tyranid MCs. Your opponent will loathe them. Whirlwinds can also be very devastating to nids as a combination of barrage rules and ammo selection means you can deny gauntscreen cover saves whenever you want. commander alexander
Aye whirlwinds are a great and cheap selection, but do not waste their shots on low model units of warriors or tyrant guard for example, use them for their strength against horde units like quants and stealers, which will not benefit from armor saves either. PKAwolf
I had mysetic spores (6 of them) used against me to devastating effect last night. I have yet to learn a counter. Hormogaunts swallowed up my Hunters by the unit... in one round of combat....twice! Zoeys are glass cannons, rapid fire bolters can drop them EZ vanilla Fexs are tame enough, I tangoed them with TWC to happy results in a 750 list, consider a Lone Wolf in TDA, should be able to handle a MC or 2 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191022-facing-nids-in-a-small-point-game/#findComment-2265951 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
I have 1k game against nids saturday, but heres something I cooked up for 750pts along the lines of a firebase/counterattack. Rune Priest- Murderous Hurricane, Living Lightning. 100pts. 10 GHs- 2xPG, PF, Standard- 195pts. 10 GHs- 2xPG, PF, Standard, Rhino- 230pts. 6 LFs- 5x ML- 140pts. Whirlwind- 85pts. 750pts. I really just dont think that an agressive list is the way to go against nidz in most games. The Rhino is there frankly as a just in case kind of thing, to help block LOS if needed, or take a farther objective in some games. Frankly though, I think Id go for annihilation. Wolf Lord Karulfr
Jaws of the World Wolf is really effective against some of the larger bugs. While they get the bonus for being a monstrous creature, their I is really low and they have large bases so you'll be able to catch more than one if you're clever. Plasma is great as everyone has said. So the the Whirlwind. Joasht
Thanks for the replies. What do you guys think of "naked" Lone Wolves? Its only slightly more expensive than Grey Hunter for a guy that could potentially bog down a good number of things for a while. Could even give them Combi-Plasmas just to add to the ranged firepower as they close in. I'm not too worried about going a little "powergamer" on him, he has always tailored his armies against mine anyway :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191022-facing-nids-in-a-small-point-game/#findComment-2269538 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
Well... on one hand alot of nidz have rending, on the other hand most dont ignore AP 3 in any way. And he is only 20pts, that doesnt give up a KP.... This would be one of the few times Id throw MotW on him actually, just for a bit of anti-gaunt fun. Nider
One thing of note, not much in the codex can have assault grenades so use that to your advantage and try to stick to cover. Warning though, warriors with lash-whips/swords reduce your initiative to 1 at the start of the assault phase and they have power weapons that cause instant death on a failed LD check. These are made for eating space marines in cover, but at around... 50 pts per. Each nid/configuration usually has a specific tactic and role, assessing and executing good target priority will win your battle. HERO
Should probably try and fit a Rune Priest, Long Fang squad and as many Razorbacks with Grey Hunters and Heavy Bolters as you can <_< For example: 745 Rune Priest (MH, JotWW) = 100 6x Long Fangs (5x ML) = 140 6x Grey Hunters (RB w/ HB, Meltagun, MotW) = 150 6x Grey Hunters (RB w/ HB, Meltagun, MotW) = 150 5x Grey Hunters (RB w/ HB, Meltagun) = 135 Lone Wolf (TDA + TH/SS) = 85 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191022-facing-nids-in-a-small-point-game/#findComment-2271273 Share on other sites
