Red Corsairs

Hello folks,

My first topic on the Chaos part of the forum. I've been in the hobby for many years and my first army were Space Marines, but I was always thinking of going traitor and have always liked the Red Corsair fluff. So, I would like to start building a RC army but I don't know where to start, which fluff to take, which units (I don't want any cult troops, only chaos undivided!!) to include, which colour scheme (red, black and gold or the original chapter with a red cross on the old chapter insignia)?

I was thinking of doing an army similar to the one that Matt Hutson from GW did for the Tale of the Four Gamers, but with a personal twist (maybe NL Raptors and some Iron Warriors from the short novel Skull Harvest in the book Heroes of the Space Marines).

The fluff I know about up till now:

- their master is huron blackheart

- they are "pirates"

- have an empire in the Maelström

- have a large fleet

- renegades

- started and lost the Badab War

- captured the Wolf of Fenris, a SW strike cruiser

- are only about 200 original Astral Claws (now Red Corsairs) marines

- have passed pacts with other warbands (Night Lords, etc...)

Anything I may have missed?

Help appreciated.

which colour scheme (red, black and gold or the original chapter with a red cross on the old chapter insignia)?

Before the "original paint scheme with red crossed out symbols" models that were shown in the 3.5 Codex Chaos Space Marines there had already previously been images of Red Corsairs models and an Artwork of Huron Blakheart in red and black armour, so when the 3.5 Codex came out I just assumed that the Astral Claws had chosen a new color scheme when they fully turned, and that those Marines with merely crossed out symbols where newcomers that joined the Red Corsairs over the years.

- are only about 200 original RC marines

200 Astral Claws were left when they fled into the Maelstrom, but some Members of the Other Chapters that had fought by their side went with them, and over the years other renegades have joined the Red Corsairs, so in total they should be more.

Red Corsairs are a great looking warband, and because they are not specialists, you can take whatever you want! But let's start at the basics -

Troops. Arguably the best basic trooper in the game is the vanilla CSM, so don't hold back! Here is a great build;

10 CSM in a Rhino

Aspiring Champion has a Powerfist

one Marine has an Icon of Chaos Glory

two Marines have identical special weapons (2 melta or 2 flamer, etc...)

No Heavy weapons, and don't mix your specials

Have at least 3 squads like this

Also, Plague Marines are awesome, and so are Khorne Berzerkers. (Berzerkers arguably need a Land Raider to be used to greatest effect, but they are still good)

Lastly, summoned Lesser Daemons are one of those units that can really mess up an enemy's game because they can be summoned to an icon without scatter, hold objectives, and assault the turn they arrive...

HQ

There are a bunch of opinions about our HQ choices, but in the end, most of them are way overpriced (especially the named characters), or just not effective (Chaos Lord)

However, the winged Daemon Prince is the monster he is supposed to be, and will leave wide swaths of destruction in his path.

I suggest taking 2 of them.

Heavy

You can't go wrong with obliterators. They are awesome. Like the Daemon Prince, they are one of the units that really shine in our Codex.

I also like Defilers, the model is awesome, the fluff is cool, and they are quite devastating in Close combat. They are a big threat to any unit in the game. The Battlecannon is a neat toy as well, for obvious reasons...

Although kinda plain and boring by comparison to the previous two, the humble autocannon/lascannon Predator is still a very, very effective choice.

IF you choose Defilers or Preds, you will find that they work MUCH better in pairs that one of each.

Cool, BBL. Hope you don't mind me stealing a bit of your thunder, but I was thinking about starting a renegade force of my own as well. I was inspired by reading a bit about Edward Teach and decided that I wanted to have a force around Captain Blackbeard and the Queen Anne's Revenge! While I like the Red Corsairs, I already have a red army (Blood Ravens :P), so I'm thinking of maybe doing them up in blue.

aeroplane, I'm glad to see that my initial impressions about the best picks from the codex are correct: the troops - so I was thinking of doing something like a traitor battle company: mostly troops with raptors and havocs, perhaps supported by preds and vindies. I tend towards fluffy armies as opposed to competitive ones; I generally don't play in tournaments so I think I will go for a chaos lord and see if I can convert him to look something like Blackbeard... probably use some bitz from the Space Wolves and maybe GS up a sweet hat.

I always wanted to (but never did) a RC army including the following:

Huron Blackheart

Cypher (counts as Chaos Sorcerer)

1 unit of RC (Black and Red)

1 unit of Fallen (Heresy era DA)

1+ unit of misc marines (with the crossed out chapter badges)

Vehicles would be a mix of former loyalist and RC paint jobs

Thought it would be fun to paint and play with.

My 2 cents

Ok, thanks for that.

What I meant was that the 200 Marines are old Astral Claws, but there are many more renegades from other Chapters.

That's why I chose them ;)

Why no special weapon mix? And why no heavy weapons?

Don't want any cult troops for the mo, but I'll maybe add some later on.

Lastly, summoned Lesser Daemons are one of those units that can really mess up an enemy's game because they can be summoned to an icon without scatter, hold objectives, and assault the turn they arrive...

^See above.^

HQ

I'll be taking Huron and a Sorcerer Lord as HQ's I think. Daemon Princes aren't fluffy with RC IMO.

However, the winged Daemon Prince is the monster he is supposed to be, and will leave wide swaths of destruction in his path.

I suggest taking 2 of them.

Heavy

Hm...I'll take a few then. Yes, they are cool :)

;) Ok so I'll take a Defiler too! :D

Although kinda plain and boring by comparison to the previous two, the humble autocannon/lascannon Predator is still a very, very effective choice.

Ok, well I was going to take one anyway, so it's a go-go!

IF you choose Defilers or Preds, you will find that they work MUCH better in pairs that one of each.

Hm...ok, thanks for the tip! :)

No problems mate! ;)

Thanks for your help guys! Will be posting an army list soon!
