DV8
A month or two ago, I was commissioned to re-model Ulrik the Slayer, much as I did my Ragnar (make him more current and dynamic, basically make him awesome). The client graciously allowed me to use Ulrik as my entry for the Golden Bolter competition, to which I just luckily managed to make the deadline today by an hour (gotta love it) Here are the pics. http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/wips/front.jpg http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/wips/back.jpg http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/wips/left.jpg http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/wips/right.jpg He has been true-scaled, and stands two heads taller than the original Ulrik, and about a head to a head and a half taller than a generic plastic Space Marine, depending on how it's assembled. http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/wips/scale.jpg Thoughts, comments? I really enjoyed the combination of the yellow and blue-green scheme, and I'm tempted to try that scheme on other models. Primarch015
awesome work. do you have a tutorial for doing those scratches in the armor? ive been trying to do them for a while but they are not turning out like yours. Wolf Lord Ronin
That is just plain awesome. I hope if GW ever releases a new sculpt of Ulrik (as well as Ragnar and Logan), that it'll be half as good as the job you've done here. The yellows on the shoulderpad/kneepad/plasma pistol work really well, as does your weathering. Where did the wooden shield come from? LorgarXVII17
Words cannot describe how I feel about that model. All I can say is that model might be the best ive ever seen. Its very dynamic, well painted and (gasp) to scale! Youve got my vote for the winner. DV8
awesome work. do you have a tutorial for doing those scratches in the armor? ive been trying to do them for a while but they are not turning out like yours. Paint on black marks with either a brush, or a torn sponge for a more splotchy, "random" pattern. I wanted something a little more refined and quick, so I just used a brush. Taking your time and using a sponge can create much better looking/realistic results though. Then go back with a fine detail brush and paint Scorched Brown, leaving a faint black outline. Then just highlight the bottom with the appropriate highlight color (in this case Bleached Bone where it's black/grey armor, and Skull White where it's yellow). It's from the old Beastman box, one of the Gor shields. Man i love it! I've seen other true-scaling methods but yours looks by far the best ive seen, could you post how you did it? Not necessarily the most "to-scale" true-scaling method, but it's certainly one of the easier methods I think. Basically I just take Space Marine legs, cut it at all the joins (hips/crotch, knee, and ankle), drill a hole through all the parts and string a paper-clip through (thereby acting as a "skeleton"), position, glue, and then gap-fill with green stuff. Amazing mini, Im never a fan of yellow shoulderpads, but you pulled them off well aswell. *applauds and toasts*. What can I say, I'm a fan of the more "classic" yellow pad on grey armor look. A true masterpiece, one of the best minis I've seen in this forum.. I'm waiting eagerly for you Ragnar Blackmane too! :) My Ragnar is quite old, already: http://www.spacewithinspace.net/images/spacewolves/ragnarblackmane.jpg Thanks for all the comments! I hope I do well too, although there are some very nice entries (the Imperial Fist jump packer, and the Salamander's Kor'sarro Khan conversion, pop up in my mind). Iacton Qruze
beautiful work as always. I was stunned by the number of single entries, but I think you'll do well. My one crit is that I think you could have taken the pelts further. Fang
This is absolutely brilliant. Random question but how do you actually paint? I mean technique wise? It doesnt look like it has been painted if you know what I mean??. The colours are really well done also. EDIT: Just looked at the other entries and in my opinion its between this, entry 38 and entry 50. Good luck. SamaNagol
That is what I like about his style, and I can see it has developed since his first Grey Hunters. I love that slightly pastelle chalky finish. It looks like rather than directly highlighting, he uses a series of washes to add depth and then adds detailing. Directional light sourcing and effects also add to the finish. Skrubb
Truely great work, DV8! I might try to model something similar, but the painting is so far out of my league, that it is a bit depressing. Only catch: I agree with Iacton Qruze. The pelt does not look entirely finished. Very monochrome. DV8
I tend to mix-and-match techniques, between glazes/washes, feathering, and wet blending. Really whatever tickles my fancy, but generally I just instinctively pick what I know will work the fastest to get the result I'm looking for. A lot of parts can be done with any of the techniques, and I just happen to choose one I'm comfortable with, or one I feel like doing... Plus there are days I just can't glaze/wash/feather/wet-blend to save my life and I have to fall back to another technique that can achieve the same result that I don't temporarily fail at. :P As to the pelts, I don't entirely disagree. Fur/pelts (sculpting and painting) as well as faces, are two of my weakest points, and definitely something I need/want to shore up. A lot of it is color theory, and a lot of it is just process. I have been experimenting a lot lately with my Wolves on both accounts, and I feel I've made considerable progress in both since my earlier attempts over the years, but there's still definitely a lot to learn (and those two aren't just the only areas, there are many more I'm sure). Be that as it may, in this instance, I just didn't feel it was worth the time/effort to try and make it better, without risking mucking it up this close to the deadline (plus I had just driven the 6 hours from Montreal back to Toronto, and being sore from snowboarding for the first time, really didn't make painting for another 5 hours ideal, but somehow I managed). Maybe next time... I hadn't really given any thought to re-doing all the characters. I did Ragnar because I field him, and I was commissioned to do Ulrik. I don't make a habit of fielding any of the others, so it's unlikely I'll model them any time soon. For now, I have a 1700 point Death Korp army to paint by February's end, and I need to finish my Vampire Counts for mid March (both for "local" tournaments).
