CrazyCanuk
I have been humming and hawing over this idea and really not sure where to go from here. I am contemplating painting my Space Wolves red. The main reason being that red really takes dipping well (I hate paitning and I am lazy..it's honestly the only way I get things done). I had started off with a semi traditional Codex Grey scheme but I am just not feeling it. Time is short and I need to speed up the process. Now don't get me wrong. I am playing these as Space Wolves using Space Wolves models. This is not some cop out to use my codex marines with the new book (I just glue wolf talismans to them :(. But they still include all the Wofly icons that we know and love. My main issue is..how do I maintain the Space Wolf look without just being Red space marines. I figure with the pelts and everything being strikingly different then that will help. But how could I pull off the shoulder pad markings. My first impression is red armor with more red/yellow traditional markings would almost be too much of the hue. I am sure I could go that way if I needed too, but I was wondering if anyone else could brainstorm up an idea. Furthermore. Anyone ever use woodstain on a tank!? No idea how that is going to look... :S Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191394-how-to-make-red-space-wolves-work/ Share on other sites
Oldenhaller
you could keep th grey and go for a part red turning to khorne army...? grey and red are a great combination ~O Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191394-how-to-make-red-space-wolves-work/#findComment-2270779 Share on other sites
CrazyCanuk
The problem is with dipping, the entire army is going to be washed with a brown stain. Grey that is dipped never looks good. The idea is to stay with brown derivatives (Reds, yellows, oranges) so that dipping doesn't look like a huge mess. There is the right way to dip, and then there are the other ways :) And I have no interest in making this a defecting Space wolf army to Chaos. They are space wolves, only red. I just need to figure out how to work in pack markings. Oldenhaller
could you not wash instead....it's like selective dipping..:) and you're right, grey does look naf with brown on top ~O Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191394-how-to-make-red-space-wolves-work/#findComment-2270794 Share on other sites
Grantyr Greymantle
or…could you dip with a dark grey/black dip instead of a brown one? that being said, I think you can paint them red if you like - just say it's your WL's favorite color Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191394-how-to-make-red-space-wolves-work/#findComment-2270814 Share on other sites

Chodjinn
there was a thread somewhere where a guy built a Loganwing army, used a spray gun with standard GW paints (Codex Grey etc) then gave a wash (The brown one . . . ?) over the top and they looked amazing. Same principle as dipping really, but not as rough. CrazyCanuk
I could use one of the Army Painter products, but I have a pretty much full can of Minwax Antique Walnut...and I am pretty short on cash as it is. So this is defenitly an exercise in using what I got. I will look into this Codex Grey, Brown wash method..but I am unsure. My issue with washing is that you usually have to go back over the model with your base color to really make it stand out. Chodjinn
Well the method I saw that gave great results was spraygun Black Basecoat > Codex Grey > Shadow Grey > Space Wolves Grey > Wash. I think. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191394-how-to-make-red-space-wolves-work/#findComment-2270931 Share on other sites
MagneticFreak
True that. Typically, you have to go towards some highlighting and shading to make to model brighter. Its however also the case for any color, red included. Well, I dont want to go into your personnal life, but perhaps wait to get enough money to buy the colors you really want. An extra can is not worth dozens of hours of painting, on the top of an army you dont truly love (on the aesthetic side). HOWEVER, red is a great color, and the 13th co. of the Eye of Terror era had a strong red component to its color scheme. Perhaps could you proceed with your plan, but make the shoulder pads, some helmets, guns etc with Codex Grey? They would simply look like ''inverted'' 13th co. space wolves, with dominant red. You could call your codex the Blood Wolves, and design some appropriate fluff... Hope it helps Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191394-how-to-make-red-space-wolves-work/#findComment-2270936 Share on other sites
CrazyCanuk
The issue is not that I dislike grey, or what have you. The issues primarily lies in that I hate painting. HATE. Painting. I play the game for the game and the social interaction. Not to sit for hours and paint my little men. I am usually not too concerned how they look but I do have my limits. I have used dipping to make great look armies and I am just trying to find a way to translate to our resident space vikings. Despite not giving too much of a hoot about painting, I am not oblivious to the fact that a good tournament score really revolves around good all around scores, including the dreaded painting score. So the focus is not only "How can I get my stuff on the table asap.", it's "How can I get my above average looking stuff on the table asap." Hence the dilema about what to do about my poor ol shoulder pads. I could go with the usual markings and have a lot of red...so...Blood Angels that dress up in pelts, or try to find a way to make them look unique, but still be able to look at them and think "Yep, that is different, but still a Space Wolf" army. There in lies my issue. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191394-how-to-make-red-space-wolves-work/#findComment-2270942 Share on other sites
MagneticFreak
Ok, in this case I hold to the last paragraph of my previous post. Use what you have and try it on a miniature, to see if its OK for you. TheLastHuzzah
If you're going for red I think it can work. I've never dipped miniatures, but why not just take a bit of time to paint the wolfy bits wolfy (pelt codex grey base, SW grey dry brush, and skull white on the head/forepaws of the pelt.). -Huzzah Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191394-how-to-make-red-space-wolves-work/#findComment-2270966 Share on other sites
Crimson Devil
Space Wolf models in any other color still look like space wolves. You would not be the first to use red as the primary color. There are quite a few red wolf armies out there. http://www.bluetablepainting.com/view_gall...?galleryID=1423 or http://www.bluetablepainting.com/view_gall...?galleryID=1030 Options: Limited Palette, choose a contrasting color (green) or a complementary one (purple) and paint a symbol or design. Decals: Any of the decals on the 13th Co. decal sheet would look good on black shoulder pads. Grey Mage
As much as I am a cheap bastard, and fully endorse using what you have at hand- when it comes to painting DONT. Take the time to do the way thatll make you happy. Youll have to stare at it for a long time after all.
