Winter is coming

I could name this post as "misfortunes of a boor using an airbrush"...

In addition to the wulfens I´m gonna paint some drop pods for a tournament in January. (I have 4 DP in my list)

Thanks to my friend Lemariont who gave me the idea, I´m going to make my DP using McDonald´s Mcflurries cup:

the plastic one, not the spiky...

I filled it with paper for more solidity an primed it with black GW spray

I used my airbrush for coloring it:

I used vallejo airbrush paints, can be used without any dilluting product:

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/2743/dscn3143o.jpg

and..bring it on!!...I used dark grey, clear grey and clear grey + white. Only consecutive layers to achieve some "realistic" look.

For the burnt butt of entering the armosphere I applied a brownish colour from downside (airbrush also).

some highlighting n the edges with a brush and apply some GW transfers to give it some color an SW style...

For some weathering applied vallejo "smoke" ink in the burnt zone and some palces of the surface of the pod:

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/1951/dscn3146c.jpg

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/5724/dscn3147.jpg

After this, I made some painted scratches with a blister sponge and "charedon granite" color from foundation set. I did it too fast and too careless..so I got some TOO big scratches that don´t look nice...next time I´ll be more careful. I applied it over the transfers to integrate them better in the pod surface

To emphasize the 3D effect of the scratch:

1- Apply the clearest gray n the lower edge of the scratch

2- For bigger scratches a charadon granite + black in the upper edge

3 - For the huge scratches I applied chain mail to show the metal part of the pod.

Final result:

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/1228/dscn3149.jpg

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/5329/dscn3153j.jpg

I´ll make a base for it with a CD. I´ll apply some putty for texture and cover with sand. I´m thinking about using oil paint for more weathering and for the terrain. I´ve never used them and could be interesting.

But unfortunately all didn´t go so good...

I test airbrush on one wulfen..and the result was really bad...

I primed them in GW black primer...

I wanted to try 3 different ways of painting to choose one for my army:

1 - Over black primer directly greys with airbrush (as drop pod)

2- Over black, white primer and after it airbrush..but my white primer didn´t want to treat me kindly...

3 - Over black, white with airbrus and after it greys..to take some advantage of the airbrush transparency and get more contrast

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/7501/dscn3141.jpg

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/3627/dscn3142f.jpg

First way..horrible:

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/3779/dscn31550.jpg

I covered completely the black with the dark gray, and this with the clear one... the final result is like I´had primed with gray primer.

I applied a brownish color from below..but the result was disappointing...

Besides the final grey is too light for my taste... think I´ll add some black or dark blue to each gray...

ANY HELP PLEASE!!..the airbrush is killing me..C&C will be really welcome..I need to manage better my airbrush before throwing it away to the street!

I´ve been working a bit more on these army, but my really bad results with the airbrush discouraged me..so I stopped posting...

2nd DP

This time I used a plastic flowerpot, to add more detail. and a tupperware for the lower part... because of the first DO looked too plain

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/5184/dscn3156l.jpg

I add more details with plasticard, sprues etc.

I filled the DP with polyirethane foam, once it dries it gets harder and doesn´t weigh a bit

primed in black

Some airbrush work and brush for the edges

My real problem started once I tried to paint marines using the airbrush..

Tried some zenithal focus..and at the end they looked like primed in my last airbrush light...awful!

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/9052/dscn3179.jpg

As I had a 40k Tournament last January I painted them really fast. It served to see how colors work together for the "good" marines I´ll try to paint again

This Christmas I got a new pack airbrush/compressor so I´ll try again to airbrush my marines. For this purpouse I set up 7 more marines for testing...

Ahh using chaos parts on your 'loyalist' Space Wolves. If ever there was clearer evidence of the heresy and corruption.

If you detail the inside of those drop pods make sure to include a pooper scooper, a rolled up newspaper and a can of air freshner. Essential when enclosed in tight spaces with a bunch of Space Wolves.

Seriously though I do support your decision to essentially do your own version of the Space Wolves. GW never should have put such a limit on Space Wolf successors. Anyway the main point of my blather, thank you for your tutorial on painting scratches and paint chipping. I have that saved and intend to use it myself.

For a 40k 'newb' those conversions and paint jobs are awfully good. I suspect you have some previous modeling experience. Warhammer fantasy maybe?

thanks mate..and yes! ..you got me..I´ve been playing WHFB for years..and now I´ve choosen (IMHO) the more "fantasy" army of 40k...the wolves, an army that I´m going to make even more "fantasy" and less sci-fi as far as I can
