black templars ...

++ new images at the end of this post ++

I will paint my marines somewhat dirty and battle damaged. and this is the start on the vehicles I have etc.

what colour my '3rd colour' will be I have not yet decided but my idea was purple, but I think I abandoned that idea.

one suggestion I have in my mind so far is blue as it looked kinda nice with the wings on the speeder as you can see on one picture.

so this is how my crusade is going for the time. and what's been done.

good scheme but I have to wonder at the purple... it just does not seem to go with the rest of the colors...

lol wow did I realy just give advice on color coordination on a warhammer 40k site... *thought runs throught head "I am a nerd"*... but that is a good scheme otherwise

the color purple is up to debate and I am not yet sure of it myself.

I got two people around me that are really good painters and got an eye for these t hings that both say that 'with a dark scheme like this you need a bright color that pops out' ... and as red is old BT standard and yellow is hard to make not look dirty I thought well, purple might be nice along white and black.

how dark/light it is on the picture and how it will be on a mini is the question =)

I have to paint a test mini for that, as said.

my other thought was to do a blue cloth, to match the eyes, but they both said it would be to cold in colors.

might need a 4th color for the icons. and that need to go along with the cloth color. so if I make a dark/blue/cold kind of purple I could make the icons blue, and if I do a lighter/warmer purple I could go for red icons.

any ideas on that? =)

Admittedly it does somewhat: in their parade uniform!

Perhaps you can add some gold details to make it stand out? Against that kind of more uniform colours, perhaps that would stand out a lot better then silver or bright red. Try to make it stand out, but not too much.

  • 1 month later...

will update this thread soon with a few testminis etc.

but I still want to ask; anyone got a good idea on how to mix a off-white mix that goes towards something warm and not to grey?

tried vallejo ghost grey right out of the bottle and it's to blue/grey ... I also tried mixing it with some white but it still turn out too cold.

tried a white/kommando khaki mix that looks OK but I thought I would ask anyway and see what people advice me of =)

I'm not too sure on the purple really, although it may look good when on a model, paint up a test piece :)

^ This.

Purple can be a trick color, and put all the effect to lose, but yes, I can picture it looking nice - It will depend sorely on your painting skillz.

I don't liked the idea of doing a halved scheme for BTs - what can sound very hypocritical of me, since I'm proposing exactly the same thing here  It's because of the purple, I think. A full black would benefit better from the purple mantle.

And please np, don't go for red icons, keep them white! Red would steal the thunder from the purple, and don't really go well with that over a black background.

Just stick with purple to make it stand out. Remember, the minis are just some centimeters high, so don't clutter too many colors on it, they are BTs, not tyranids :D

the color purple is up to debate and I am not yet sure of it myself.

I absolutely love the colour scheme in the OP (though perhaps unsurprising by looking at my DIY chapter). Few colours seem to work as a trim to both White and Black at the same time, but purple is one of them. If you're going with blue, may I suggest quite a slightly brighter one?

hehe ... I figured you like the purple yes =)

the depth of colour on the blue/purple is yet to be decided as the sm painter don't do shadows =)

atm my main problem is to get a warmer white.

done some painting on the speeders, the result is as follows:

the black parts will become battle damage and flakes of paint removed etc. wear and tear simply.

love the speeder B) how did you acheive the random splatters for the battle damage?

have you decided on the colour scheme?

the purple looks much better e.g.

http://www.thearena.se/_privat/marine_purple_loin.png

however if you use the purples robes like this:

http://www.thearena.se/_privat/marine_purple.png

then the purple really dominates the figure and it doesnt work so well

so i'd take the purple and use it sparingly

thanks for the input =)

well the purples to be or not to be is debated at the moment.

as I am on the same line as you regarding the dominance. I have been thinking on going RED as not to wander away from the BT theme to much.

but at the same time I am soooo bad on painting red so =)) and I think red robed figures would look better then purple robed ones =p

the effect is made with tiny pieces of foam dipped in colour, pressed to a paper a few times to remove excess and then put on the model.

they leave a rather splashy looking effect. and you can 'paint' with it as well to get a more streaky effect. will use to to add large rust/burnt effect etc. later on on the engine.

the skull on the door with the eagle isn't done ans also the flash highlights it a bit strange, will try to get some better pictures once the rhino is completely done.

I love the :D out of this weathering.

haha thanks. I got a bit carried away. got some comments on it from a few friends in the gaming group that's under the strict attitude that marines never get nor will show themselves dirty or let their vehicles look like this =/

but I like this style so =)

Between campaigns they probably wouldn't, but when you're fighting day after day after day in a planetary conflict you probably don't find that much time for touching up and polishing :)

exactly =)

and my templars fight all the time =) I state they replaced their paintshop with a bar =)
