Equiping Thunderwolf Mount

I need some assistance in sorting out the most efficient setup for a character on a thunderwolf mount (that will lead Thunderwolf Cavalry)

Should I take a

Wolf Lord - Frostaxe, Storm Shield, Wolf Tail Talisman, Thunderwolf Mount, x2 Fenrisian Wolves and Saga of the Beast Slayer

at the cost of 235 points

OR

Wolf Guard Battle-Leader, Twin Wolf Claws, Meltabombs, Wolf Tooth Necklace, Wolf Tail Talisman, Thunderwolf Mount, The Belt of Russ, x2 Fenrisian Wolves and Saga of Majesty

at the cost of 235 Points

or some other build entirely?

Also, I am trying to find where it says that Thunderwolf riders can't take Terminator armour. Can someone point that out for me please.

The book says if your character has not taken terminator armour, he may purchase x,y,z.

As for load outs, its pretty much what your army is going to do. This is especially true for the sagas, which are arguably the hardest choice. For instance, do you want super killy guy, then saga of the warrior born or beast slayer might be for you. Do you want wolves in your army, then go with wolfkin. Never seen magesty, but that can work. Saga of the bear is also fun as well.

The first choice you have to make after that is do you want belt of russ or stormshield? Each have their advantages, but many will go with the belt because you get the extra attack. I prefer the shield because I like the way it looks, and its 10 less points, and a better save.

The next is your weapon. Another tough decision. Are you going to be focusing on troop killing, MC, vehicles? Each one calls for a specific weapon. The math-hammer says wolf claws are better than frost blades, however. If your gonna be going after troops, claws are great. If your going after larger enemies, Thunder hammer is a great option (but then you loose that sexy initiative). Again a tough choice. I prefer 1 wolf claw with my storm shield. If you go with belt of russ, then you are usually better off with a frostblade and the extra attack.

2x f-wolves are mandatory. It's gonna be a pain closing in, and you want them to soak up those insta-death shots to the face.. such is the tough life of our space puppies.

And of course, the talisman is a no brainer.

I personally like your second build, but maybe saga of the bear?. For your first build I would go with belt of russ instead of the storm shield.

Again, its completely subjective and everyone has a different use/view on what TWM wold lords should do. I use mine to crush troops. CRUSH them. Its fun =). He rides in with 10-17 f-wolves with saga of the wolfkin, thats a lot of Init 5 attacks =). To each their own.

I haven't actually used a character on TWM, so this is all theory. Take it with a grain of salt. That being said, I think I'd favor a cheapo WGBL w/frostblade and TWM for stuff without powerfists. Or, if I was fighting someone with a lot of powerfists in their army or wanted to go as killy as I could, I'd take a WL w/frostblade, runic armor, belt of russ, saga of the warrior born. 'Course, the Wolf Lord would cost almost twice as much.

I run my wolf lord with Frost Blade, Belt of Russ, bolt pistol, 2 fen wolves, and a saga (i've been toying around with Wolfkin and Warrior Born).

Why I do this: bolt pistol + belt of russ gives him an extra attack and is cheaper than a storm shield which I value more than the difference between a 3++ and a 4++. He gets 7 S6 attacks on the charge at I5 (plus his wolves that also count as t5 if he's with atleast 2 TWC and I5 with saga of the wolfkin) this alone is enough to do serious harm to most troops units and even harder targets (last night he went toe to toe with a daemon prince and they killed eachother).

If you're set on a storm shield, then perhaps you'd be better of taking a wolf claw - you stay at I5 but you don't "lose" that extra attack from the missing bolt pistol, since you wouldn't get it anyway.

Wolf Guard Battle-Leader, Twin Wolf Claws, Meltabombs, Wolf Tooth Necklace, Wolf Tail Talisman, Thunderwolf Mount, The Belt of Russ, x2 Fenrisian Wolves and Saga of Majesty

i dont think a WGBL can take the belt. only wolf lords right?

My two favorite lord choices that I figured out:

1) Thunder Wolf, 2 Wolves, Frost axe/sword, Storm Shield and either Beast Slayer or Warrior for Saga. Either more attacks or somethign to take on MCs.

2) Thunder Wolf, 2 Wolves, Wolf Claw, Storm Shield and Beast Slayer or Warrior Saga. This one gives you rerolls if you take the slayer saga or tons of attacks with the saga.

WGBL cannot take a Belt of Russ. They also cannot take Saga of Majesty.

It depends what your tasking him for and how many points you want to spend.

First I'll go with Infantry Killy...

Wolf Lord W/ Wolf, Frostblade, Bolt Pistol, Wolf Tail Talisman (I get these for every character - good 5 points), Belt of Russ, Runic Armor, Warrior Born.

- This build is pretty steep but is made to run with a pack of small wolves and run through infantry as if they weren't there. - And he does. The 2+ Save is awesome for infantry that wound on 5's or 6's - you won't take many wounds other than an occasional fist, which is why you have the Belt. - Can also task after Characters and as a last resort MC. (Only if you have the Belt though)

If you need him a little cheaper I would drop the Belt and maybe even warrior born, but I prefer it.

Now if you want one to task after IC, MC, and maybe vehicles...

Wolf Lord W/ Wolf, Thunderhammer, Storm Shield, Wolf Tail Talisman, Saga of the Bear.

Don't get a 2+ save, most things you will fight, will ignore it. The Storm shield is required. The TH is really nice when doing vehicles and especially MC and EW characters. - Reducing them to your initiative will at least, make you go down in a blaze of glory, should it happen. Talisman as always. Saga of the Bear for two reasons. - Instant death in H+H w/ Wraithlords, Carnifexes etc... And Force weapons if you ever see them. Also, for going after vehicles. If you do decide you need to go hammer a tank to death you will be left out in the open and unengaged, and Vidicators and Railguns and IG Psychers, and etc... really like taking a shot at you. - I usually run this build with a TWC unit or alone. - He can cut it alone just fine if you can hide him behind a raider or some cover for the first turn or two.

If you think you can hide well enough and don't think you'll need him to take out Str 10 creatures, the first thing to drop is the Saga. His T5 makes him fine against most so you won't have to worry much. I would only recommend this though if you have a TH Lone Wolf around to take care of those he can't.

I do not take Saga of the Wolfkin on my Lords - I take one on my Wolf Priest. I always run one and he has no need for other Sagas so I put it one him as the benefit stands nonetheless.

I hope this helps and my logic seems sound to you. In the way I run my armies it works great on the occasion that I run any TWC. (no models, freaking GW)

Edit: Spelling, incorrect word.

Wolf Guard Battle-Leader, Twin Wolf Claws, Meltabombs, Wolf Tooth Necklace, Wolf Tail Talisman, Thunderwolf Mount, The Belt of Russ, x2 Fenrisian Wolves and Saga of Majesty at the cost of 235 Points

WGBL cannot take a Belt of Russ. They also cannot take Saga of Majesty.
