I thought about this.. 9 Snipers and a missle or something might be amusing. Though 5 with snipers would be good too. Or 10, or 2 5's.. the point of the snipers is pinning, i belive. So take your Wolf Scouts with Snipers if you like the Pinning rules.

 

Actually, looking it up, id say the something like 9 snipers (36") and a Heavy Bolter (36") debloying as infultrators in cover, not to far ahead, but withen 36" and with good LoS could work out well for support for your army by pinning and weaking units. Though, if you have enough elite slots, 2 squads of 5 with same set up could mean you pin two squads.

 

Could drop the Heavy bolter too, but its only 5 points, 2 more then the Sniper itself. The idea has always made me giddy, but ive never tried it out.

 

Ive also been playing with the idea in my head of a 10 man Scout pack with 2 PW, Melta, Wolf Guard with Fist for a OBEL assault unit. The cost comes out to about the same as the Grey Hunters unit of the same build. The Bonus is you dont need a rhino to get across the map, so you will likly get into melee at full strength! Downside is the lower armor save.. but again, the lack of being shot it makes it a pritty small downside imo.

 

Im just torn on which of our amazing Elites to use.. i love them all.

OP: i plan to run a pack with snipers. for the most part it will be situational only but i may just throw them in a list to mess with peoples heads. my biggest dilemma is if they should get the HB or the ML as both seem like they would be just as usefully for different reasons.

I found 7 WS 6 Sniper and 1 ML is the fewest you would want to run in a squad. When doing the math hammer on only the 6 sniper rifles, you are looking at 4 hits and from that 2 wounds with a possible 1 kill. Any less sniper shots and your chances of getting a kill with the squad means they are not worth taking.

 

I would take the ML over the HB in a all comers list. The other bonus for a sniper squad outside of pinning is the rending roll, but it takes 10 sniper rifles to get a average 1 rending hit. A rending hit of course is an almost sure way to force a pinning test.

 

keep in mind that a kill with a sniper rifle forces an immediate pinning test meaning if you cause multiple wounds with sniper rifle hits, you force a pinning test for each failed save, thus multiple pinning test can occure from one round of shooting. This also means if the squad passes the pinning test they may also have to take a leadership test for 25% troop loss.

 

taking full advantage of a sniper squad is about the only way to get their worth.

 

TIP: Fear the H-flamer.
