Capt. Kenaz
Simple question really, mostly looking for experience from the table top: Does it make sense to equip on of my grey hunter pack members with both the plasma pistol and power weapon option??? I was thinking, as long as he does not blow himself up, it would make the most sense to give him both special weapons, as after all of the other pack memebers are dead, he could still dish out some hurt as the last man standing. Am I wrong in my thinking? Does it make more sense to give one pack member the plasma pistol and then a seperate member the power fist? ReyRex
Don't do it. You will thank us when it comes to wound allocation. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191793-one-grey-hunter-in-the-pack/#findComment-2276012 Share on other sites
Skirax
Some see it the first way; have 'bodyguards' ready to jump in the way, making the weapons have a higher chance of reaching the enemy. Some see it the second way; if the guy with, for example, Plasma Pistol, MotW and Power Weapon died, that's roughly 60 points wasted on one guy. Better to spread the points out. As for what you should do, think about how often you might need, say, a power weapon model and a plasma weapon model, or one plasma weapon/power weapon model. Stormbrow II
Plasma pistols shouldn't be used anyway. You can do if you want but it doesn't make sense tactically. Why are you going to spend 45 points on 1 model that has a 6% chance of killing himself every time he fires his weapon? Capt. Kenaz
Skirax, I see why this would be a good idea... "Better to spread the points out." Also, StormBrowII: "You can do if you want but it doesn't make sense tactically. Why are you going to spend 45 points on 1 model that has a 6% chance of killing himself every time he fires his weapon?" That's also a valid point... Thanks for the feedback. WG Vrox
The real reason that a PP and PW is a no no is the overheat save. It already sucks to loose a 30 point model to a bad roll, let alone 45. PP have their place and it is in a full squad of 9 w/ WG or 10GH in a DP or in the hands of a HQ wearing Runic Armour. Other than that I have found the PP hardly pays for itself. Yeti
Another vote for putting them on separate models. As for their usefulness ... I run one, so it must be good. ;) Seriously, they come in handy when softening up elite troops before a charge and can add an extra shot capable of popping a transport. It's hardly a "must have", but if you've got the points lying around, it's handy. G. A. K.
I have a few from back in third edition when you could take two per squad. I'd have one plasma pistol/ power weapon guy and one plasma/ CCCW guy. If I got an overheat, i'd kill the other one :). Thats not an option anymore... so, no. I don't do it. The only guy with two things in my army these days is a meltagunner with a standard for one of my droppod squads. For when I have ten guys and two meltas. You need to look at the big picture. It isn't just overheats anymore, you could have no choice but to put a wound on him and when he fails, he will 1/3 of the time, it will really suck. And on your point of him being the last guy standing, well at that point that guy is screwed anyway, no matter who he is. But if you have just one guy left, why wouldn't you want it to be the WG. Azmodeus
I concur w the other pack brothers above. Dont lump them all into 1 model. Especially when he fries, you lose the PW as well :D Never been a fan of plasma pistols on GH, tempts you to throw more points than you need Yeah, I suppose being last man standing, you are pretty much screwed for that GH pack Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191793-one-grey-hunter-in-the-pack/#findComment-2282927 Share on other sites
Grimtooth
I have a plasma pistol Grey Hunter in my double flamer Grey Hunter squad. My figuring is that they are going to be moving close enough to fire off those double flame templates so add in a short range plasma shot that will also allow assaulting afterward. Also, while he has a 6% chance of frying himself, he has a 94% chance of not. I like that side of the odds better. Capt. Kenaz
Okay guys; thanks for all of the thoughtful replies. It is much appreciated and I will take all of your words of wisdom into consideration too. I figure I'll run my GH's with one plasma pistol and one power fist, BUT on 2 seperate models now! :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191793-one-grey-hunter-in-the-pack/#findComment-2282952 Share on other sites
