kickingbird
Hey guys, just thought id post to see your opinions on grey hunter squad size. In the current list im working on Im going to have 4 squads of 7 with a wolfguad making them 8 strong. Do you think they need to be larger or do you think I can get away with 8? I can see the problem being that i take morale tests from shooting with only 2 kills but ive still got the 2 melta shots that I would have if they were 8 or 9 strong. My philosophy is that I may have less men in each squad but will have more squads/guns that can cover different places on the board. Any advice would be welcome, hope you guys are kicking some ass on the battlefield! P.S. im also thinking about taking two melta/heavy flamer armed drop pod dreads, will one do the trick or is 2 still viable? WOLF_GUARD
could work depending on your style 9 with wolf guard in tda all the way for me and 2 dreads is what alot of people run including me :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191917-grey-hunter-squad-size/#findComment-2277680 Share on other sites
Ullr Direfang
ok so my post didn't go through the first time: i personally go with squads of 10 and i run four of them. the free weapon is to appealing to me. i also take it that your second melta shot comes from the WG with combie-melta. i personally don't like running WG, i have a hard time fitting them in my list. as for the drop pods and dreds, i know a lot of people that do that, just they stick with the general podding rule of taking odd numbers of them. and as far as people not replying..... many people don't reply to many different questions. i have had threads in the past that have never gotten replies, and some that took 100+ views to get a reply. Kenmichi
In my opinion the only time you should take 8 GH is when they're being led by a Wolf Guard and HQ. Example, I have a close combat pack with a melta, power weapon, with a standard all led by a Wolf Guard with a frost axe and chainsword which is all being accompanied by Ulrik the Slayer. Otherwise 9, 10, and 6 are the magic numbers (9+Wolf Guard, 2xspecial weapons, and a pack in a Razorback). This is assuming you aren't footslogging. Valerian
Nothing at all wrong with it. 7 Grey Hunters plus a Wolf Guard is plenty durable, and you'll get an extra scoring unit out of it. Godhead
I now run 3 packs of 8 (7 gh + wg). I am much happier with this setup than I have been with the 9+1, 9+1 and I a 7gh and a RP in the 3rd. I also think it depends on what else you are running. With this list im podding down a term squad and a dread, so those have to be priority targets. Loher
7+1 GH squad is top when it comes to1500 points tournament army. Add a wolf standard, and a combi melta on WG. kickingbird
Sweet, by the sounds of it i'll stick with the 8 and see how that works. Imo a do like the idea of having more scoring units then less but with bigger numbers. Thanks for your input guys, ale for everyone! Wildfire
7+1 is about the minimum I would go, but is doable. I try to get larger squads if possible, but dropping a GH or two per squad is an acceptable way to free up points.
