Power Fist
Hey, Wolves, So I am almost finished painting my first 1850 points of Space Wolves, and I'm trying to decide what direction to head next. I'm currently running a Grimnarwing, but there may be times where a named character is not allowed or where I just want to play something else. I'm thinking of what I should get next. Currently, I have: Logan Rune Priest 15 Wolf Guard Terminators with various armaments 6xLong Fangs (5 Multimeltas + Sergeant w/ BP and Chainsword) 2xLand Raider Crusaders/Redeemers (magnetized to use either) 2x Lone Wolves (1 TH/Shield, 1 Chainfist/Shield, plus 4 Fen Wolves) So where should I go next, if I want to be able to mix it up some? I'm guessing first place is a regular Wolf Lord, and then ... who knows? :) Thoughts? Wolf Guard Dan
Yes, you need troops for when you cannot take Logan. Also, you need more than 15 troop models in the army. Get a grey hunter squad or two just so you have enough guys to take objectives. Power Fist
Having played Deathwing for a -long- time, I am finding my Grimnarwing to be 1000 times more effective (with approximately the same number of models). 15 Troop models may not seem like a lot, but they get the job done. Really, really well, at that... But I am definitely thinking of expanding my forces to a more "normal" SW army. So Hunters are the way to go? How should I build them? What's the "optimal" build there? And should I be thinking Rhinos or Pods? (I'm not a rookie by any stretch. I am more asking "What are people succeeding with?" than "Please help me because I don't know anything." ) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191925-expanding-my-forces/#findComment-2278478 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
People are succeeding with three builds- Rhinos, DPs, and Footslogging. So sadly I cant narrow it down by what "works" because all three options do well for SWs. But what I will say is that if you have alot of TDA in your army I would suggest that you look to how you use them to give you the rest of your army- do you like to walk them in or DP them? If you DP them then Id suggest GHs in DPs for support, if you walk them on Id suggest putting them in Rhinos. The reason being that DP forces tend to do well at 5 or 7 pods, wich is easier to achieve with some troop choices around- and itll help give you more wounds on the field. Just remember, the more you have in pods the more of your army you dont have on the field killing things. Thats why I reccommend a landspeeder, or two, and some scouts in any DP list I see. For the footslogging list as I said I reccommend Rhino Mounted GHs and some tank support- dakka predators, and a whirlwind. Why? Because rhinos are immune to the same thing TDA is higly resistant to- small arms fire. They are also usually targetted by mid to high strength low ap shots that are normally TDA killers... this should help force your opponent to stretch his AT firepower past the breaking point... and to the point where youll only need a 1 in 5 SS ratio, keeping your costs down too. Throw in a couple of fast units- bikers, speeders, scouts- to round out your force, perhaps with a secondairy HQ *or your primary if logain must stay home* and youll have a balanced force thatll be a tough fight for just about anyone IMHO. Hope that helps. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191925-expanding-my-forces/#findComment-2278791 Share on other sites
Yeti
Grey Mage pretty much hit it on the head. As to specific squad setups, specialization is often the key with wolves. With grey hunters, melta packs (2x melta) and plasma packs (2x plasma gun) each play a different role. Meltas shoot forward in rhinos and do driveby meltings before getting into assault. Adding a wolf standard and power weapon are good investments. You can drop them down to 9 and accompany them by either WG (w/ combimelta) or an HQ for that extra CC punch. Plasmas go for objectives, transports are optional IMO. I currently run mine 2x plasma, power weapon + a WG with combi-plasma & wolf claw. They can dish out crap loads of AP2, supported by bolters and can take a charge like anything. The WG helps by boosting the Ld (important for counter charge), providing another one-shot plasma gun and some extra power weapon attacks. Since they're objective holders, I find that these packs need to be larger since they usually take a lot in fire from a variety of sources, especially ordnance. Power Fist
Thanks, guys. This is exactly the kind of help I was hoping for. So I should start with maybe 2x10 Grey Hunters, maybe one double melta and one double plasma? (Or 2x9, really, because I can always pull in two of my existing Terms as WGLs for each of the squads. I have quite a few combi-melta guys, so they should fit the bill.) Rhinos as optional? Of course, if I'm fielding both my LRs, the extra Rhinos would probably be nice. What about Fen Wolf packs? Are they worth it at all? Or Blood Claws? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/191925-expanding-my-forces/#findComment-2279153 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
2x10- you can always put TDA pack leader witha footslogging squad, and WGPLs are optional- so youll want the full squads for the option at the very least. Frankly I almost never take WGPLs on GHs, simply because I find the extra 50-60pts isnt needed for them to be very effective at what they do. Wildfire
I'd go 7-9 GH +1 WG (in PA) in rhinos, personally. It depends on how aggressive you are. From your list, though, it appears as if you like to get into CC quickly. That means you want bodies, CC upgrades, and transports.
