A Scythe of the Emperor

Hi there, I recntly came into possesion of two of the Masters of the Chapter set, and have decided that I want one of them to be a Scythe of the Emperor. Now I know that they have been all but wiped out but I wanted the captain to be the head of the devestator company before the catastrophe of the Hive Fleet eating Sotha. I made a start on him today, blocking in the yellow of his main armour. But I have a question, did the Scythes use the coloured trims like the Ultras and Fists to denote company or did they do it their own way?

Anyhoo, here are the pics of the beginnings of a Scythe.

I'm sorry. I don't know the answer to your question. However I do know that your model is beautifully painted. Can't wait to see it finished. Its things like this that inspire me to practise my painting in the hope I'll be this good someday.

Nice model man! Can't wait to see It finished!

As to your question, I don't know either, but apart from the Scythes of the Emperor Chapter being whipped out by the 'Nids, not much is known about them(I'm happy to learn about them if anyone else knows more!). I say make it up yourself. Use the codex chapters as a starter point, but do it your own way.

Cheers for the link mate, seems there's not the much about them flying around. I found the website that was set up about them but it doesn't show what their rank structures and insignias were. I think I'll take it my own way, it's only a display piece after all, it doesn't need to be 100% and they've left some room for playing around with. Cheers fellas. I'll post up some more progress tomorrow hopefully.

Also, the Scythes were wiped out in the dark days of 2nd edition, when Officers could have very different armor and heraldry compared to the line troopers. Look at the cover of the Dark Millennium boxset, that guy in white is a *Dark Angel*!

Translation: Make him look cool and no-one will care about you not following whatever fluff they have from 20 years ago!

Good point mate. I've been leafing through a lot of the old 2nd Edition stuff recently whilst redoing my Blood Angels. I know the pic you mean as well. Quite a few of the minis were painted up in differing schemes too.

Well a thought I'd try out the blue heraldic trim on a shoulder pad to see how it looks.

This may or may not help:

As to heraldry - I always took the view that they used standard codex heraldry pre-Kraken.

Post Kraken, it would not make much sense to bother with the formal heraldry so much, as there are less than one company of survivors. (which is why my guys on the Heart just have the black trims).

However there is no 'official' line on this from GW

- So basically do what you like, he is coming along nicely!

Hello, not posted anything in a while, because there was nothing to post. But, I have made some progress on my Scythe of the Emperor. I've filled in some block colour on things like the purity seals but I'm mainly concentarting on the cloak at the moment. It was originally going to be red but after put the regal blue basecoat on I realised that blue looks kinda cool and is the colour of his company.

Still got to bring up the highlights on the cloak and blend in some of the layers a bit more but it's on it's way to completion now.
