Salvé brothers!

I started this thread almost two years (crikey!) ago enlarging a standard marine; needless to say I went a bit too far. I now know that the nomenclature is Truescale but I don't particularly like the term so I won't be using any, this is just my attempt to make some Astartes that look as big in model form as they are said to be in the background.

Whilst this is my second proper modelling project here on The Bolter and Chainsword I have attempted to make bigger marines several times before. I used one of the old plastic marines from the 2nd Ed. boxed set the first time, old peg leg as I called him and I never bothered again until the 3rd Ed. multi-pose marines were released, when I was such a novice modeller I didn't even know about pinning and so never cut the legs all the way through so I could just bend them into a straiter, taller pose!

After my last attempt I decided that the only way I was going to get a marine that looked like a man in a suit of armour was to actually put a man into a suit of armour so I'm starting off this new WIP thread with a few photographs of a very basic marine-sized human. To keep inline with the size-creep of the current citadel miniatures I've made this model to a 30mm scale rather than 28mm and so this fella has come out at around Seven feet and Four inches tall; which is roughly congruent with Artemis from Inquisitor. I'll be making armour in a similar version to my MKI marine but hollowing it out so I can fit it onto this chap and that should keep it at a realistic size relative to the wearer and help me to avoid the problem area around the hips and waist which always seems to end up looking pretty wierd.

i think the proportions are off.

the head looks too large, the chest too tall and the shoulders too wide. increasing the length of the legs and the width of the hip would be the quickest way of sorting this but would result in a much larger model.

only my opinion obviously and if your happy with the scale go for it.

i did love the look of your original biggerised marine though so look forward to seeing this progress.

Yes, the chest itself is too wide pushing the shoulders out so that won't take more than a quick cut-and-glue to fix, not quite sure what you mean by too tall as the pectoral muscle from bottom to top is accurate to within less than half a millimetre (4mm when 3.7mm would be perfectly precise but 3.7mm represents an average chest [scaled up to marine size] without muscle). The head is totally unfinished which is why it's wider; hence no ears or eyes and the nose isn't finished either.

Thanks for the input :P

I've reduced the width of the chest and I'm quite happy with it now. Each shoulder is 1mm wider than the average measurement, 3mil as opposed to 2mil. Allowing for the fact that a Marine should have more muscle than the average person I'm in two minds to file them down so any input on that issue is gratefully received.

I've also gone on a couple more stages with the head. As you can see I've carved it down a fair way, I've lowered the eye sockets and I've finished the nose off. As a loose approximation to just help me get the size of the armour right I think it all looks okay. Any thoughts, any other areas that don't look quite right?

I know it's a bit late now, but the broader Marine looked fine. After all, Marines are supposed to be huge and heavily muscled compared to oridinary humans.

To balance out the broadness, you could have beefed up his thighs a bit (something which is always lacking in GW's models) When compared to his arms, the legs are a bit skinny. If you aim for something more akin to Conan or even Thrudd the Barbarian in musculature, you won't far wrong.

Hope that helps.

True, and thank you for the compliments, but I think I made the right decision with the chest. Compared to the Guardsmen even without making this armature a really huge Marine, he is still much, much bigger than them. Using a 30mm scale rather than 28mm the Sergeant comes in around six feet and the trooper about five feet nine. By comparison the armature stands at roughly seven feet and four inches!

I actually have another armature, much bigger than this one but since I want to have two or three sizes of armour, rather than simply having every Marine stand at the exact same height, I decided it would be easier to make a 'smaller' Marine and then increase the size of the armour in the same way I did my first MKI Marine in the other thread.

Thanks for the comments, it's always very helpful to get a fresh perspective.

Salvé brothers!

I prepared some torso armour which I found to be about the right width without modification but it did need to be lengthened so I added a plasticard spacer and cleaned out the inside so it would fit onto the armature. The main problem I encountered was that the rear half of the neck ring is too small to actually be worn. Considering how to fit the armour with a more natural look to it I began tinkering around with my earlier and bigger armature I decided to shorten it up to make it stand precisely forty-one millimetres high, which translates to an eight foot tall space marine. I've measured the lengths of the body and limbs and they are all spot on and even measured his chest and legs around and, based on the relative proportions of a power lifter found them to also be spot on so in terms of fitting armour to this armature I'm reasonably confident that it will look like it would if a human were inside.

Anyway, just a snap of the taller armature with the head and arms tacked on for easy removal.

I never intended to cast the terminator, it was only ever a one-off project. You can see it in the background of the last picture and that's how far I've got with him, I've wanted to do more but it's been far too cold to paint unfortunately. Thanks for the comments :P

Steady progress with the torso so far and I'm really pleased with how it's shaping up. Obviously there's a lot more to do on just the torso let alone the rest of him but I've already started on the legs and they too will be hollowed out so that they can be carefully fitted to the armature. The cabling and belt that are still on the torso will be removed entirely and I'll be making my own but I've left them on so far as they help to visualise the Marine better.

Aww shucks :)

Thanks for the support. I spent a lot of time building both of those armatures with the constant desire for 'accurate' proportions. Shame I didn't pay attention to them that much. So, I've spent even longer cutting and filing and re-sculpting them to be perfectly accurate, in terms of length, width and depth of the limbs and body et cetera so I'm reasonably confident that that body represents the dimentions of a Space Marine quite well now. At least I hope so.

Hopefully I'll have some more pictures to go up by tomorrow. Thanks for commenting :P

I've added another internal neck ring which needs to be drilled out tomorrow and when I get started on the helmet my intention is to have sit on its own spine so the helmet won't actually sit on the Marine's head but will be fully articulated which means that the Marine will have a degree of mobility within the helmet. Going by that concept it would fit that the earlier marks of Space Marine Power Armour which had fixed helmets did not have that level of sophistication but wouldn'y have sat on the Marine's head anyway so it kinda makes sense I suppose.

I've also got to cut the leg again, to increase the depth of it too and then the whole section will be hollowed out. I only wanted the armour to cover the Marine's limbs, going by an old picture of the Emperor whose armour is quite form fitting. Even so the armour is 1mm thick (and it will get a little thicker when finally completed) which works out at 2.3 inches and probably about 3 inches or armour either side of his leg, and that's at thinest area.

Not much to report on progress that isn't clear in the pics. I'm going to build up the outer edge of the thigh armour and then I'll have to carve it back to follow the curve of his groin. I think that once both legs are done I'll use the same method that I used to make the gorget to make the new abdominal armour and I'll be modelling an attachment for the leg armour to hang from which can be seen in current day strength enhancing suits like HAL and the Berkeley exo-skeleton.

Once the basic construction is done all this will get a skim of GS and then a skin of plasticard to neaten it all up. Also, bear in mind that these parts are only placed onto the armature to aid me in getting the right shapes and proportions so the finished marine will have all the right gaps around his knees etcetera.

This might be a bit late but aren't astartes meant to be slightly out of proportion compared to the standard human, i remember reading that their chest is bigger but the head the same size which makes it look tiny...

Awesome stuff though

I've not come across that description myself but I wanted my Marines to be big humans which is how I've always imagined them. Also a hate pinhead marines.

Thanks for the comments.

I've made a fair bit of progress since my last update but there is still a some way to go. I'm much, much happier with this Fluff Scale marine than my last one which was way too big. I've just measured him and, ignoring his boot soles, which are only 1mm, his total height to the top of his head (unhelmeted) is 40mm. Since I've made this marine to a 30mm scale that makes his height in real terms 92inches or seven feet and six inches.

I've increased the length of the backpack but it's still too short, especially in comparison to the width of the thing with the stabiliser jets on so that'll need lengthening some more. Boots aren't quite done and lots of other little details but hopefully this should give some indication of how this marine will turn out once complete.

Comments and Criticism greatfully received; particularly about the pauldrons, not sure if they need to be bugger or not.
