ANCIENT FALOR
How many astrates did a capital ship carry? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192435-pre-heresy-astrates-capital-ship-question/ Share on other sites
Captain Juan Juarez
Depends on the type of ship and it's class... Remember the Astartes were not limited to Battlebarge, Strike Cruiser and escorts as they are now.. They could have pretty much anything! Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
i would look at the BFG chaos fleets, as some of them as seen service since prior to the Great Crusade WLK Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192435-pre-heresy-astrates-capital-ship-question/#findComment-2284768 Share on other sites
isilvra
do you mean capital ship as in battleships or capital ship in the sense of anything of cruiser class or higher? Battleship would be a couple of thousand. A cruiser would be between two hundrad and a thousand at most. Foolish to have astartes on a destroyer in any real numbers but maybe the captain would be a marine. Rain
I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure Crusade-era Astartes ships were fairly non-standard with each legion creating its ships to both show off their power and adapt to the legion's particular needs. The Vengeful Spirit was probably the largest and could surely carry several thousand Astartes. Legions given to grandstanding like the Emperor's Children probably had larger vessels while the Alpha Legion and such probably had smaller ones though these were still quite large as just two Alpha Legion battle barges destroy an entire Imperial Expeditionary fleet. Captain Juan Juarez
Do you understand the definition of "capital ship"? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192435-pre-heresy-astrates-capital-ship-question/#findComment-2286973 Share on other sites
Pacific81
The BFG definition of a 'Capital ship' is anything Cruiser sized or higher. So, this would include Cruisers, Heavy Cruisers, Battle barges and Battleships amongst other larger types. By its definition, a destroyer is an Escort, not a Capital Ship. Personally I can imagine the larger barges and battleships used by the Legions could carry many thousands of marines.
