Aerixis
This is my first of many more tutorials to come, and I thought I'd kick it off with a bang. I am going to show you how to construct a miniature to use as a Master of the Forge for a Codex Space Marine chapter. This is VERY picture heavy, but it is worth it! I have had to split it up oiver a few threads, but let me know what you think! Now, looking at the codex, it says that a servo-harness provides a flamer, plasma cutter and an extra servo arm, for a total of 4 extra arms. Now I wanted to do something different, and with over 9 years worth of bitz I had enough parts to do something truly awesome, and I decided a long time ago that I wanted to do a master of the forge in a Dr. Octopus-style pose. Walking on two mechanised legs with the other 2 free to use as weapons. This is what I ended up making: http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/7-1.jpg First of all, I had no set way to do this, nor did I have any 'grand master plan' on how to go about this mammoth task, because noone had done anything like this before so I nad nothing to go by, but I did know that I was going to chronicle it and show the forums! Lets start this ball rolling. First things first, I needed a body. After making a Ravenwing apothecary, I had a backpack leftover. And I found a MKVIII body too. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/7.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/8.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/9.jpg The 'dex says he has a flamer. I didn't want this on a servo-arm, so I decided to give him a Vulkan He'stan style arm. I used an apothecary narthecium, Imperial Guard flamer, and the commander sword arm. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/10.jpg I cut the flamer barrel off... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/11.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/12.jpg And attached this to the commander sword arm under the elbow... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/13.jpg And added the cable from a terminator chainfist and attached it to the body. Now to start on the harness. I had already decided that it needs four arms, two on top, two at the bottom. Lets look at the top ones. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/14.jpg I used parts from 2 guns from the Fortified Mansion kit. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/15.jpg Cut off the mounts and attach them, with a bit of trimming, to the backpack with the rivet at the from. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/16.jpg Now using a land speeder searchlight... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/17.jpg Tweak and attach to the mounts. Depending on how you trim off the light, you will get different finishing poses. Without planning, you need to be very lucky and be willing to make constant changes. In the next thread, I will start the plasma cutter, arms, base, and everything else. Let me know what you think so far! Aerixis
Hey! Welcome to the second part of my first conversion corner! I wanted the plasma cutter to resemble manipulated mechanical tools, so I decided to make a manual operation arm for him to control the plasma-cutter. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/18.jpg This uses two sights from a land speeder, a tank hook, and grip from an ork rokkit-launcher (not pictured). http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/19.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/20.jpg Glue it together so it hangs over his shoulder, ideally with the grip dangling almost unaided. Attach it to the side of the place you attached the searchlight part. Now we will build a bigger, better plasma-cutter. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/21.jpg Obviously, use a pair of plasma pistols. To get the focused position, I glued them to more tank hooks. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/22.jpg I used an old autopistol as their mount... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/23.jpg And a marine missile launcher, land speeder assault cannon, and tank searchlight as the arm. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/24.jpg Cut down the assault cannon... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/25.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/26.jpg And cut down a lamp from what I think was a ruined cities of death building. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/27.jpg This is a crap photo, but stick it together however you want the pose to work. I wanted it to look like it was hanging idle, so retraced and inactive was my goal. You can't see, but I trimmed and tweaked some melta-bombs to use as joints between the pieces. Now I'm gonna work on the additional servo-arm, the one that would be used as an extra weapon. Bearing in mind I used the flamer on the arm, so I had 3 servo arms to use. Two to walk on, one to bash with. I didn't want the typical techmarine servo-arm, I wanted a big, heavy-duty piece of equipment, and most GW stuff is 2d in the sense that it is flat. Mine was going to be a triple-bladed chain-attachment. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/28.jpg Use the barrel from the fortiffied mansion kit from earlier. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/29.jpg The rings from a Rhino, scope from scout bol pistols and the tips of some chainswords. I glued them so the scopes resembled hydraulics. Depending on how you want the tool too look, you could use different positions or pieces altogether. Looking back, I wish I had done an assault drill style attachment, ironically which I'm already half-way through making! http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/30.jpg Use the same parts as the plasma cauuter arm, a missile launcher arm and asasult cannon. This is to keep some uniformity to the constructm and to prevent it looking orky. Again, assemble them however you want it to look. Lunging, gripping, idle, whatever. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/31.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/32.jpg Attach it to another searchlight as before, and position as you wish. Use melta-bombs as joints as before. Now thats finished, he needs another arm. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/33.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/34.jpg Start by using this assault marine poiwer fist, and cutting away the fist, trying to keep the piping. Grab the clenched fist from a terminator. After you have attached it to the arm, you'll notice that there is a bit of piuping not attached to anything. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/35.jpg Cut off the reciever from a tank radar, adn attach it to the arm to the pipe. The 'dex says he can have digital weapons, so lets find something for that. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/36-2.jpg I used this piece from the scout boxed set (or the scout biker, I forget). Attach it to the back of the hand as so. I changed my mind at this point, deciding not to give him a weapon, so I wanted an auspex. In this case... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/37.jpg The one from the devastator boxed set. Looks cool right? In part 3, I'll be working on extra servo-arms, the legs, and the base! Let me know what you guys think so far! Aerixis
Hey guys, this is part 3 of my Techmarine conversion corner! I will be working on the legs here, so rummage through your bitz box and try to keep up! http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/38.jpg I used a marine missile launcher barrel, 3 bolt pistols, a backpack vent and a pistol magasine. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/39.jpg I assembled them into a three-toed foot. Bearing in mind it is not intended to be used as a leg, so keep trying to imagine what it would look like if it were being used as a claw when you assemble it. Also keep in mind what base you want it attached to. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/40.jpg The first part of the leg uses a trimmed down tank storm bolter and a melta-bomb as the joint. This shot shows 1 for each foot. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/41.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/42.jpg Attach it to the vent as an ankle in whichever position you want. Moswt of the leg wasn't left to fry so I could manipulate the pose however I wanted. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/43.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/44.jpg For the seond part of the leg, I trimmed down an ork chainsword... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/45.jpg And the vent from a jump pack... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/46.jpg And attached them to the leg, using the vent to fill a gap and a melta-bomb as a joint. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/47.jpg Now I used another land speeder asault cannon as the last part of the leg, and a tank searchlight as a 'hip' joint. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/48.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/49.jpg This is what the two should look like. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/50.jpg And this is what it will look like when attached to the body. Lots o dry fitting, test fitting and alterations took place by this point, so be very patient with it. This shot also shows the other servo arm, which I will show you in the next thread! Stay tuned, and let me know what you guys think! Aerixis
This is part 4 of my conversion corner, and I will show the final details and finished piece of my Space Marine Master of the Forge! First of all, the Codex says he can have a bolter or bolt pistol. I want him to be useful in combat, so I went for bolt pistol. With no free hands, I decided to plonk it on another servo-arm! http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/511.jpg Using the arm from the devastator missile launcher backpack, and the tip of a chainsword, I trimmed and altered the pose a little so I was more 'open'. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/512.jpg And attached a scout bolter to the arm like this. I liked the scout pistol because it was smaller, and fitted nicely with the chainblade. Attach this to the backpack underneath the assaulting servo-arm, in a similar place to the plasma-cutter manipulator arm on the other side. With pretty much all the top-half done, I need a base. A normal 28mm miniature base obviously didnt fit, and I wanted something a bit more dramatic... http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/51.jpg So a dreadnought base was the only good piece! (i now had a dreadnought with no feet, but you have to make sacrifices!) I added a bit of battlefield debris in the form of a rhino top hatch, and positioned it so the legs would be a bit overhanging. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/52.jpg Attach the legs to the pieces like this, luckily they didn't dry so I was able to tweak the legs to fit where I wanted them to attach to the body. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/53.jpg Now glue the torso to the legs using more land speeder searchlights as before. They're not in this shot but it will be in a sec... As you can see, I used assault marine legs, and altered the foot so it looked more 'dangly'. I also added skulls and mechanical parts like rivets to the legs to tech it up a bit, because I didn't have the parts of the green stuff to do the layered armor of a normal techmarine, which was a dissapointment, but I managed to work round it. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/54.jpg Here you can see the legs using the searchlights as hip joints, and the smaller servo arms attached to the backpack. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/55.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h167/aerixis/bctech/56.jpg Here are the finished servo arms. All that's left now is to attach an appropriate head, and I wanted a bare head because the pose harks back to the old techmarine from the command swuad, looking to one side firing his weapon. Now he's finished! Check out my final post to see the completed miniature! Thankyou for coming with me on this creative journey, I hope you have a go and I'd love to hear any comments from you! Let me know if you have a go at this, it's so much fun just letting your creativity and imagination run wild. I will be posting a painting tutorial for this in the morning, because right now it's 3am and I'm frikkin' knackered. See you soon! Xeonic
...First of all, the Codex says he can have a bolter or bolt pistol. I want him to be useful in combat, so I went for bolt pistol. ... Great looking conversion! I just wanted to comment on one thing here, the FAQ for the BT codex states that the TL plasma pistol on the techmarine servo harness grants +1 attack, thus he does not need a bolt pistol. Take that as you may, though it is specifically for the BT codex, codex marines also get plasma pistols on their servo harnesses. Aerixis
Can I just ask what kit is the 'Fortified Mansion'? It's a warhammer building scenery kit, though I may be wrong because I've got some many damn bitz i just kinda threw them on the desk and started glueing! Aerixis
This is awsome how long did It take to build? Hey Man! It took from 11pm to 10.30am. I kid thee not. The painting took from 3pm to about 11.30pm maybe, LMAO! SO yeah, quite a while.
