Wolf Guard Body Guard Set-up

I was thinking of running a 5 man body guard with my Lord, and mounting them in a Razorback.

I was just wondering what you all had success with, or if you think this is even worth it. My idea was this: CP/Frost, Storm Bolter/Frost, WCs, TH/SS, PP/Frost.

is it worth it to take that many frost weapons, or should i just leave them at power swords. I don't have a "set opponent", so I'm up for options

The wolf lord will be kitted out as following. Storm Bolter, Frost, WTN, Belt of Russ, (saga of bear?)

Thanks in advance :)

Eric

Firstly I would drop de SB fromo the Lord and give him a plasma/bolt pistol to keep the extra CC attack.

Now, as the Wolf Guard is small in numbers, I would keep them cheap so that they function as ablative bodies while your lord does the killing, maybe one guy with power fist/thunder hammer to help with armour or big nasties, a combi-flamer/melta in the power fist guy and that's it. Uber equipping this small unit will almost always mean expensive deaths.

That's my oppinion.

I run lord with pp, th, belt and beastslayer with a pw/bp, th/ss, wc's, pf/c-f, pf/c-m. Mostly just for fluff with my guys, they win whatever combat they're put in but like was said each death is really felt. Sometimes i'll just drop a guy from my 5 gh squads and put one of the wg with them and make up the points by getting another gh squad for the lord to roam with. Fills my troops and gives each squad a hero though i expect more from them than they achieve like that.

Your load out is decent, although you might be better served with terminator armour if your gonna sink a lot of points into his retinue. As has been pointed out, you will really feel each loss when each model is worth 30pts+. Then again, that is true of any expensive model, and its a matter of not sending them to a stupid death =). Just make sure you have the ability to fight MC, make some invulnerable saves, and then also deal with hordes. Keep a couple pretty basic, and keep the pts low and you should be good to go. Its hard to make a really killy deathstar unit with space wolves that will beat other deathstar units, I find we are a more balanced list and point efficiency really seems to be important for us (more so than others, although its still imp).

I like the termie style unit, or put him with TWC.

thanks for the advice guys

@ Raulmichile: D'oh, i wasn't thinking that the SB denies my lord the extra attack in CC, I think a PP will be better choice.

As far as Termie style, I can make a lord and a 4 man retinue and mount them in a Land Raider with the following equipment:

Wolf Lord has: WTN, Frost, and Saga of Beast Slayer and the 4 WG having 2 frost swords, a pair of WC and one with TH/SS to take care of big baddies. All this is cheaper than the power armor load out, so I won't be cringing as much when I lose a model -_-

Thanks for the replies

I ran a unit of 5 WG with a WL in a Razorback and was very disappointed with it, but that was my fault because it was a very small unit and was the only dedicated CC unit in the army. since then I have changed my list to include 2 WGBLs (kept cheap with almost no wargear) and 2 more small units of WG (again kept cheap, hell 3 in each pack are bare-knuckle brawlers -_-)

The list works very well now because it all focuses on EXTREMELY close range fighting with 2 GH units with MotW and WG as well as 2 more with dual plasma guns for support.

Basically if you run a WG retinue for your WL keep them cheap unless they are termies and always have another CC unit to back them up. My favourite is a bunch of skylcaws with attached WP, they can turn the tide of any drawn out CC with a devastating charge and are sort of cheap (well, they aren't over the top expensive!)

At 18 ppm plus the Wolf Priest that unit becomes quite expensive by itself -_-
