Wolf Lord Ronin
Hey guys, I need help deciding on which Great Company I wish to create for my Space Wolves force. At first, I had decided on either Bran Redmaw or Erik Morkai's Great Company, but after seeing some examples of them online, I decided the white shoulderpads arent really my kinda thing, plus I dont particularly like Morkai's fluff (though Redmaw seems like a pretty cool guy). After looking through my Codex again, as well as reading the first Space Wolves omnibus (not that I condone BL fluff to be canon but its sometimes better than nothing), I decided to choose either Ragnar Blackmane's Great Company, Logan Grimnar's Great Company pre-Great Wolf, or Logan post-Great Wolf. In terms of painting scheme, Ive become quite enamored with the yellow that Ragnar's Great Company has (though I understand most people dont like them), while I think it'd also be just as great to run a Company belonging to the Great Wolf himself. At this point Im in a bit of a bind here, and wanted to ask you folks which Great Company I should go with. Thinking I might also pick up the second omnibus and see how that goes too. My paintscheme is gonna be the pre-Heresy grey scheme you see alot, except no matter which Great Company I choose, I intend for them to have a gold/bronze trim on their shoulderpads. Admist all the dark grey, I think Ragnar's scheme with the yellow may stand out more, so atm that's who Im leaning towards. And no doubt I wish to run Ragnar in my list (at about 2000pt or higher), however I wouldnt mind giving Wolfwing armies a go, and if Im running with Logan's Great Company, it'd be easier to implement fluffwise. Cheers. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192660-which-great-company/ Share on other sites
clanfield
i use blackmaine company and love it the yellow peril :) logan is good as a char maybe you should look at how you will build your company and find a lord that fits your play style (something im looking at) as to the grey it looks fine my old army was grey the boys got melted in a fire, so when i rebuilt i used the pale blue which with enough badab black looks grey any way ....? hey ho hope this helps Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192660-which-great-company/#findComment-2287754 Share on other sites
Kjarl Grimblood
Two big options I see: Choose a Lord and build your army to fit his fluff, or get a general idea of the type of list you'd like and then choose the right Wolf Lord. If you're doing pre-heresy grey have you considered doing a 13th Company army? Either way, I wouldn't worry too much about lining up your paint scheme with your Wolf Lord. Choose the Wolf Lord that you like best for fluff and the paint scheme that you think looks great. It's a game, so who says you can't have both. Hope you have a great time building your new army. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192660-which-great-company/#findComment-2287772 Share on other sites
Wolf Lord Ronin
Cheers for the input. Im not particularly keen on a 13th Company, mostly because Im not fond of the implications, or fluff behind them (it's cool, I just wouldnt want my army to be themed on it). Fluffwise, Ragnar and Logan are my favourites, however I was gonna go for Redmaw and Morkai as my Lord earlier because my army was going to have alot of MotW and/or Scouts, but I really like the Wolves, and one day I intend to own enough models of enough varieties that I can build whatever list I'd like, rather than one particular playstyle. Other than wanting to try Wolfwing (I love Terminator armour), Im not quite sure what playstyle I am into (I play Orks so I like CC, but Space Wolves in general are quite well-rounded with good capabilities at range and CC), however I am keen for drop pods, which according to the fluff, is Ragnar's specialty, and Im going to need drop pods for the Wolfwing list I wish to use. Other than loading up on GH, I also wish to use Blood Claws cause I find them quite fluffy and awesome, and they'd make a great entourage for Ragnar. PS: Does anyone know the name of the totem Logan has taken as his Great Company symbol pre-Great Wolf? I know Ragnar's is the Blackmane wolf, but the Codex never states what the howling wolf's head is. Given Logan's charistmatic nature and majesty, as well as being known as the "High King", and if you take Ben Counter's "Twelve Wolves" short story as any sort of fluff (it was pretty cool), I'd assume it to be Thengir, the King Wolf. Aeddon
I'd suggest you don't pick a Wolf Lord yet. Build your company towards however you want to play, finding what works best for you. If you find yourself leaning towards a particular Wolf Lord than start painting shoulderpads. If you find that you don't really lean towards any of the 12 Wolf Lords than why not create your own Lost Company. That could certainly account for the pre-heresy armor colors and give you more flexability with your build. When I started building my Great Company I did it with Erik Morkai in mind. I loved the fluff and the no-nonsense feel of it all. After a few games I quickly discovered that while I do like Wolf Scouts, I don't really like them that much. In a lot of games I don't take them at all. Instead I find myself running all drop-pod armies which is Ragnars speciality as you said. So after a lot of repainting I now have a (still work in progress) Ragnar Company. And now I find myself wanting to try new things that resemble other Wolf Lords' Great Companies. Point as stated above, get a few games under your belt and see how you like to play as a player. What units do you always take? What is the overall feeling of your Great Company? Once you've got a few more games under your belt this should become more apparent but for now I wouldn't worry about picking which Wolf Lord's markings to paint. c-wrex
Wasn't there a thread around here somewhere that listed all of the wolf lords in this new dex?
