Mark of the Wolven

Ok here my problem. the book states that the model is not affected by wargear when they have mark of the wolven. My LGS claims that he saw a White Dwarf article that told him he could use a thunder hammer with the mark. so my local game store is running it that each grey hunter squad runs around with a dude with D6+1 str8 attacks. Is this right?

it used to be but not any more.

also white dwarf is a horrible standard to hold truths to.

if he can give us the page number and issue i would love to check this out.

if he would read the motw entry it says that his attacks are not affected by any wargear.

Agreed, White Dwarf has been known to redo battle reports until they get the result they want. Hardly the most reliable people for rules and fair play.

The codex is clear, MofW cannot be used with close combat weapons of any type. What he's doing is obviously and unashamedly cheating. Well not really. Technically, he just can't use his Thunderhammer in combat. :)

Its in issue 357, the one with the big space wolf on it, thats the Oct 2009 issue. on page 25, first collem there in the lower left, first sentance;

"My favourit is the Wolf Guard with the Mark of the Wulfen, capable of unleashing a potential sever thunderhammer attacks each turn."

Ive posted about it in the past.. but ya.. i belive the theroy was this was writen before the codex was printed fully.. so maybe they had a beta version, or he is remembering some of our 3rd eddition baddassory..

I miss my Wulfen Lord in my 13th company army.. Mmm.. 6+d3 str 5 power weapon attacks on the charge.. 5+d3 without.. Ah the good old days!

Yeah... thats the good old 3rd edition rules, and the guy misinterpreting the current ones- perhaps when lone wolves were still full wulfen.

Your LGS is wrong, ask them to show you in the rules where powerfists etc ignore the normal rules for the wargear.

Well most of the batreps you see nowadays are primarily there to advertise the latest release, rather than give an insight into the hobby. It wouldnt reflect very well on the sales of a new force were they to get tanked in the battle report.

Speaking of MotW. Would it be good idea to give it to some character? Like WGBL? Or is it best to be left for the reguler troops.

For the most part, people consider it to be a waste on characters. They generally have more than one attack apiece, and replacing their attack characteristic for a possible less generally isn't a good idea. Plus, they have access to all the other cool gear (combi-stuff, wolf claws, frost weapons). Leave it for the troops.

This is way out of topic, but...

I am of the opposite impression of you. I have not been studying it, but I feel that it is not uncommon for the army being re-released to lose, or at least draw, the battle reports in the relevant White Dwarf. I am quite sure that would never happen back in the days of second edition. The "new guys" always won. Likewise in the battle reports included in (at least some of) the 2nd ed codices. Am I entirely out of touch? Is everything getting worse by the year?
