White Hunter
So as a Codex:SM player originally I was used to taking my troops putting them on an objective and holding it while the rest of my army did the heavy lifting. As I have played the wolves more and more (rapidly becoming the more favored of my 2 armies) this seems like such a gross under utilization of GH awesomeness. However I am having a hard time finding the balance between keeping them at home to hold objectives and win me games while at the same time making full use of their potential. So I was wondering what tactics the more experienced players have come up with for GH (I play mech by the way), and what role in the army they play beyond objective grabber (though they are nigh impossible to pry off an objective). Captain Juan Juarez
Well GH Packs are a real mans version of a Tactical Squad, but with a free second Special Weapon if you have 10 Pack Members. I'd say treat them akin to an elite Tac Squad... They can be unmovable in defence and unstoppable in attack, especially with two meltas or flamers. Wolf Guard Hengist
After plenty of play testing I am just using them as all out assault units fully equipped with the toys they can play with. Sat in a Razorback with a meltagun may look good in the army list section to some but that set up is weak with one purpose, to sit on an objective waiting to get killed. My basic set up is a Wolf Guard with Combi Melta and Powerfist leading 8 Grey Hunters armed with a Powerfist, Meltagun, Mark of Wulfen and the Wolf Standard all mounted up in a Rhino. This unit chucks out 5 powerfist attacks on the charge/counter charge along with everything else and you still get your double melta shot when you need it. The best bit of kit in this unit is the Wolf Standard, the amount of re rolls this things bags you is awesome, in a recent tourney I played in it really gave me the edge in combats agaisnt the likes of Daemons and Beserkers etc. The down side to this set up is the cost, I run three of these unitswhich costs me a hefty amount of points but its so worth it. For claiming objectives I always make sure my opponent has more near his deployment zone favouring agressive tactics and in capture and control I just ignore my own base and go for the enemies leaving a support unit to contest mine. Hope this gives you an option to consider. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192787-grey-hunter-tactics/#findComment-2289811 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
Who would ever sit in a Razorback with a meltagun? No no no... you stand next to the razorback, with your plasmagun, your buddies plasmagun, and 8 bolters as you cut down the orkish horde before you, then you disconnect their skulls form their spines while the flame troopers move up to keep them from sporing. GHs as fire support units shouldnt be underestimated... but they certainly dont need much "tricking" in order to become good solid assault units. Believe me I've seen it done regulary in lists and I am certainly not discounting the Plasma fire support set up of Grey Hunters as I've tried it and like it alot but it doesnt fit into my aggressive play style. I'll agree to disagree with the "tricking" out comment but at the end of the day it boils down to what your want your Grey Hunters to do in the battle. ReyRex
The GHs do it all for me. I'll give you an example of my Objective baby sitters. 10 GH in a Drop Pod. 2 Plasmaguns, Plasma Pistol and Power Weapon. Assault GH unit. 10 GHs. Flamer, Meltagun, Powerfist, MotW, Banner This unit also has attached WG and IC for more Killyness. Greywolf
For objective games, I'll even take a 5 man GH Pack with WG Pack Leader. Set them up next to my Long Fangs and a Razorback. When needed, jump in the Razorback and move to whatever objective you need claimed and/or contested. Its a very useful unit and strategy.
