Firenze
Im starting to be really annoyed by Land Speeders. So I might get one squadron of the buggers. I may get a Tfire, but seeing Wan get his taken out by my Colossus first turn, I may pass on it. Ctan had terrible luck I agree. Against scouts and termi lists, it didnt work the best for him really... Bring on UM5! Im gonna bring a GOOD army! waaanial00
I may get a Tfire, but seeing Wan get his taken out by my Colossus first turn, I may pass on it. Before anyone else is put off by this statement it has to be said that the same Colossus (S6, AP3, No cover save) did destroy 8 of 10 tactical marines who found themselves in the open. So its not as if the thing went down to a weak weapon, also the Techmarine did survive long enough to continue to annoy Firenze, so much so that he risked killing a deep striking unit of Storm troopers who deviated off the board. It did get taken down first turn, but thats nothing really to read into and thats the first time that this has happened (at that point I only had two Rhinos and the Thunderfire on the board). /Thundefire cannon defence I will be writing this game up later however a point of awesome luck has to be when my Librarian suffered the wrath of 10 storm troopers, 19 hot shot las rounds get 3 wounds. My Librarian utilised his environmental skills and deflected these two shots by throwing up some dirt (I went to ground in open ground and rolled 2 6's out of 3 - Firenze was not amused ) However my "Man on Fire" award has got to go to the Techmarine manning the Thunderfire cannon. In one game against PhoenixKnight he was roused to fury as a command squad primed with meltaguns and a power fist destroyed his Legendary artilery piece, this drove him to heights of rage at this afront to the Machine God. Next turn he killed one upstart with his plasma and then charged into mele. The blessing of the Omnissiah was upon him as he suffered no damage or hurt, shrugging off a power fist attack (PhoenixKnight rolled a 1 to wound the only attack which hit) whilst landing two members of the command squad with his servo harness. This was not all, he feinted and mis footed the two surviving members and ignored yet another power fist attack before smacking down the remaining two. This was not all though declaring the transport which carried those who carried out such a crime to technology a techno heresy he moved on to take it on. Using the blessed plasma pistol of the servo harness he destroyed the Storm Bolter which had lent fire to the heretics of the Omnissiah! The infernal machine then turned and advanced upon the techmarine, who was not to be moved. With a mighty warcry that those on the vox would attest to sounding like machine code he swung the servo harness and destroyed the machine. Even its death could not strike low such a devote warrior. The game might have been lost, however those who witnessed that Techmarine payed special attention to their battle rights and said a special prayer to the god emperor, blessed is he who protects mankind. The same techmarine also powered his replacement thunderfire cannon to great effect against those Vile Xenos the Eldar, its tremor shells making the slippery shining spears pay for every inch with a loss of a warrior (poor Cadarn and his unlucky dangerous terrain rolls). The techmarine survived once more despite two rounds of missile fire finally claiming the cannon. This most heroic and noble warrior mechanic was finally brought low by the Tyranid menace. Thunderfire cannon shells claiming a zoanthrope and putting numerous wounds onto monsterous creatures and genestealers alike the plucky Marine came unstuck to a rampaging Trygon who almost paid the ultimate price for facing off against this ultimate warrior (had I rolled just one more hit it would have seen the Techmarine still die but take the damn thing with him), that'll make Stormbringer be wary of taking on the might of the Crimson Fists again. Ignore the Thunderfire Cannon as an option if you so wish, in all my games with it I have yet to find a reason why it should not earn its place in my roster. Blessed be the Omnissiah. storm bringer
I think I went 2 wins, 1 loss and one (nail biting, exhausting and thoroughly enjoyable) draw. Wan (Trygons - Pah!) You weren't saying "pah" halfway through turn 6- more like "o *4%+, my last Tac squad about to be eaten" Still your tactical rhino blocking and no turn 7 saved the day for the Crimson Fists! But no qualms about the draw, it was a really great game that had lots of entertainment (especially you rolling shed loads of 1s at the start and end of the game! so a draw in the face of that must surely feel pretty good?) and your sneaky late game dash for my home objective only added to the excitement. My other games against Idaho, Thantoes and GC08 were also great fun with ebbs and flows throughout them all. So all-in-all great gaming, great laugh and BBQ and beers all through in, who could ask for more? Hopefully, see you guys next time. Cadarn
Well, I'm damned glad I did make it up. I managed to squeeze in three games, even though I was only there for the one day. Despite working to try and get my Wolf Wing ready, I never got them out of the box. Using my Eldar all day instead, and I have to say that it was a pleasant change. First game saw the Xenos going up against a veritable tide of Sisters of Battle, and despite some nice early wins, the last couple of turns just tipped me over into the realms of intellectualism, with me simply not having enough units on the board to make the required kills. Still, was damned good fun playing a different army, as I've never played against sisters before. I thought Eldar were tricksy, but they have nothing on SoB and their dirty little faith points. Second game was against Firenze's brother (sorry, I forgot the chaps name, but that's nothing new for me at these events). Managed to grab a win, but it came close towards the end when he unleashed his command squad of doom. Third game was against Waaanial, and his rather obscene amount of armour. I have a new found respect for Thunderfires and their ability to hamper a skimmer force. Serves me right for skimping on the Skilled Rider ability for my Shining Spears. It was an object lesson in what happens to a highly mobile strike force when their transports are immobilised. The Eldar tanks still proved extremely difficult to kill, but I think I'll be favouring a more balanced list in future. Or at least not being a numpty. Why I opted for second turn I have no idea. If I'd had first turn I'd have been in a much better position by taking out his long ranged weapons before they did their damage. Lessons learned this time are: -Forget the Autarch and go for a second Farseer. The combined benefits of Guide and Doom cannot be rated highly enough. -Shining spears are very sexy but too difficult to hide well enough to use as a counter Assault force, and too fragile to run out into the open. I'll be retiring them for some Banshees which I'll use to guard my Reapers and Guardians. -More Ranged firepower is needed. This Friday I'm going and bagging me a couple of War Walkers -Learning the proper emergency disembarkation rules mean I now need to change my tactics regarding my Fire Dragons. Tactic is now to leave them on the shelf. I'll keep my tank busting at range from now on, as getting those guys into position is a massive risky pain. All in all, a cracking day and I look forward to the next one. Storm Bringer is of course right about this. I certainly wasnt saying much pah when all three of them formed a wall infront of my objective. Neither was I saying pah when I had 2 charging my dreadnoughts. Still wasnt saying pah when there was 2 still alive on turn 5. Was definitely not saying pah when my multi meltas both missed the one almost on my objective which only had one wound left, plenty of shaking hands to the heavens and asking why though :) The word didnt enter my thoughts when the same one ripped three of my four speeders from the air the turn after I missed with the meltas either. On reflection the game was relatively pah free game ;) I still think you should have been able to go between my Rhinos to charge at my sneaky sneaky combat squad sitting on your objective, 4" gap should be enough to move it through, though I will remember that it takes a 6" gap to move a creature of that scale between tanks :) Was certainly one of the best games I have played in a very long time. Its nice to see that I can think tactically sometimes and get close to winning capture and control. The funny thing was that it swung between an apparent win for me, then a win for you, then a draw, then almost a win for both of us, to finally a draw. I dont think I have had a game that close in a long while. So many what if's my mind cannot possibly form them into sentances. Oh to the exploding dreads doing more damage in death than in life was probably a little bit of a kick (me chanting 6, 6, 6, 6 probably wasnt friendly at this point). Great competative list you have there, if they change the GT rules this time it really should do well. Its going to eat through armies like they were nothing. Wan Yes, it was a truly great game, not just for the drama but for the spirit of fun and adventure it was played in. I must also admit, it is an ironic scene when your opponent is praying that you detonate their dreadnoughts (in CC) so that a host of your own genestealers get caught in thye blast! much amusement! storm bringer
I'm back (many thanks to Wan for the lift)! Gaming wise I did well, playing some extremely good opponents and getting good practice in with my army. Had 1 each win, loss and draw but felt good as the games were close and the loss was against a GT finalist with 3 Mawlocs and more Genestealers than you can shake a chainsword at - and I almost had you Stormbringer (who am I kidding eh?). I think you're being a bit hard on yourself there mate, our game was closer to a draw than you think as I think your 10 tac would have seen off my prime contesting my home objective had there been a turn 7 and nothing else in range to do anything about that. A fun game indeed! PS Am I the only who cannot open GC08's photos? Yeah, it was a nice opportunity to go up against the deviant witchery of the Eldar menace! Heh heh heh I have to say Cadarn that I was starting to panic to do enough damage in the last couple of turns to secure a win. by the end of T4 i knew I needed to punch above my weight otherwise a draw was going to be my best result. The tipping point had to be that unit of shining spears which parked themselves in front of one of my big sisters squads and then hitting them with divine guided RF bolters. I that hadn't have worked i'd have been struggling. I do have to say that I was impressed by the eldar's ability to pump out the shots. That 'blade storm'(?) ability has the potential to really hurt and if my squads had been 10 strong instead of 14 I reckon they'd have met the emperor and given up their KP's a lot easier. For me it was a really good weekend and many thanks for the competition which was different from the norm. It would be remiss of me to not give my condolences to Thantoes for the sickening bout of abysmal luck he endured for our game. Failing to roll three 2+ saves for the last 3 temies in one of his squads was par for the course, the dice gods had truly forsaken him. Anyway, good to meet you all guys. Hopefully SB, PK and myself will try and attend the next event and equally hopefully we'll be bringing the 4 member of our group, Gonefishing, along with his patented 'Ninja Tau'. Essentially in the North West there was a clump of trees about 16" East of the board edge and about 10" South. South West there was a rocky outcrop approx 12" East of the board and 6" North. There was a rocky outcrop in the dead centre of the board with another rocky outcrop North East of it, neither were particularly high. Finally there was a low hill section in the South East.Mission and DeploymentMission was sieze ground and deployment was spearhead.3 Objectives were placed just West of the trees, in the dead centre and near the low hill.We rolled off and Firenze got first go.Guard DeploymentFirenze Started off by placing his Vanquishers in the North East Corner with his Colossus between them. His Techpriest and servitors were just South of the Vanquisher on the board edge. He placed Straken near to his objective and placed a unit of veterans on the objective. The two Chimeras were placed close to the objective also but facing my objective. The two Stormtroopers were deepstriking and the Sentinel outflanked.Marines DeploymentAfter reading a thread recently about thinking outside the box when it comes to deployment I decided to try my luck with reserving most of my army. My Thunderfire cannon on the crest with my Techmarine just behind it to hope for a cover save, the Rhinos both deploy within LOS but behind the hill enough to get a cover save.My MM landspeeders were deep striking however everything else was in normal reserve.I decided not to sieze the initiative.NOTE: As this was my first of 3 games on Saturday I am a little sketchy on the details, as such I apologise to Firenze if I get some details wrong.Guard turn 1Straken moved towards the woods, reasoning that I wouldnt be rushing towards his objective very quickly. His 2 Chimeras moved towards my lines at 6".The Vanquishers slightly repositioned themselves for better angels.Shooting started with both Vanquishers missing my Rhinos (much to the dismay of Firenze). One Chimera had a very long ranged effort at the same Rhino but also missed. The Colossus lobbed its shell directly on the Thunderfire cannon, wrecking the cannon but leaving the Techmarine shaking his mechanical fists at the IG lines.Marine turn 1My Rhinos move up to envelop my objective, my Techmarine sits between the two of them.No shooting.Guard turn 2His Scout Sentinel outflanks on the West side and a unit of Storm troopers come in, they attempt to deepstrike behind my Rhino wall but deviate East and land off the board. A lucky six keeps them in the game however they reenter reserve.Movement sees the Chimeras break ranks, one heads straight towards my Rhinos and the other moves up towards the Northern outcrop, hoping to stop any chance of me flanking around it.Shooting sees 1 Vanquisher hit my Rhino and remove the Storm bolter. The same Rhino is pulse lasered and Shaken by Chimera fire. The colossus misses the Techmarine and scatteres off the board.Marine turn 2My Thunderfires and rifleman dreadnoughts become available. I move them on near to the Scout Sentinel.Shooting sees the Sentinel immobilised and Shaken by my Rifleman. My Typhoons wipe out the Vet squad that is sitting on the objective with heavy bolters and frag templates. My single Rhino that can shoot pops a hatch and my Missile launcher sends a crack into the Chimera coming straight at me. It is immobilised.Guard turn 31 unit of Stormtroopers arrive, they deep strike and scatter into something (I forget what) and I get to place them. I decide to be nice and place them in front of the Vanquisher between my rifleman and it.He moves his mobile Chimera behind the rocky outcrop to the north and moves Straken up through the trees.Shooting sees my Rifleman nuked by the Vanquishers, Both my Rhinos survive Scatter Laser and Heavy bolter rounds. My Techmarine survives the Colossus template.Marine turn 3My MM Landspeeders become available, so does my Lascannon Dreadnought and Sternguard. My MM Landspeeders deep strike between Straken and the mobile Chimera, my Lascannon Dread moves up near to my Typhoons and my Sternguard move up towards my destroyed Rifleman (my Librarian pops out).My Typhoons move slightly forwards.Shooting sees the Typhoons kill the Techpriest and 2 servitors, my Lascannon Dread shake the Colossus and my Librarian fail to cast Machine curse (3rd time I rolled 11 for Psychic powers in a week at this point). My sternguard shoot at something but dont do much from what I can recall. Both Krak missiles from my Rhinos and ruin the Scatter laser on the Imobilised Chimera. My MM Landspeeders destroy the Chimera and probably kill 1 guardsman in the blast. They pass their LD test.Guard turn 4Other Stormtroopers become available and deep strike near to my Techmarine.Melta Vets and Straken unit moves towards my MM Landspeeders. His Stormtroopers on the West move towards my Librarian. Shooting from Vets and Straken unit sees both Landspeeders destroyed, one of my Typhoons get destroyed by the Vanquishers (who choose to hit this time), his Eastern Stormtroopers kill my Techmarine. Then his Western Stormtroopers rapid fire on my Librarian, 19 shots leads to just 3 wounds (AP3). Firenze believes that the Librarian is done for, however I go to ground and make 2 of 3 6+ cover saves, he is not amused!Marine turn 4My last Tactical squad is available and it guns 12" onto the objective. My Lascannon Dread moves up towards the Chimera. My Sternguard deploy to take on the Stormtroopers on the West. A Tactical with flamer squad deploys from Rhino and moves up to the Eastern stormtroopers. My remaining Typhoon moves across to target the remaining Vet squad.Shooting sees the Western Stormtroopers reduced to something like 3 guys and the Eastern squad completely destroyed by pistols and then assault. My Dread shoots the Chimera but does nothing. The Typhoon kills more than 50% of the Vet squad and forces them off the board.Guard turn 5Straken moves up towards my Scoring Rhino. Other tanks just shuffle around. The remaining storm troopers aim at my Librarian.Shooting sees my Dread lose a TL Lascannon. My Librarain takes a hot shot las to the head regardless of him trying the mud defence again. My Tac squad loses about 8 of its members to the Colossus. Straken cannot do anything to my Rhino.Marine turn 5My Typhoon moves to get a better angle on the Chimera, My dread moves up to the Chimera as well.Shooting from the Typhoon, MM and Plasmagun in the Rhino destroys the Chimera. Sternguard kills the last of the Stormtroopers.Guard turn 6Straken moves towards my dread.Shooting fails to damage my dread and Colossus fails to damage whatever it shot at.Marine turn 6Dread moves towards the command squad. Typhoon and Rhino kill about 2 of the command squad. Dread charges in and gets killed by Straken, who is apparently a S6 Monsterous Creature (when did that happen? he is a guardsman aint he? - Broken!!!).I win 2 objectives to 0Was apparently the worst luck Firenze had ever had, I can see that his luck wasnt brilliant. If the Vanquishers had hit a little more then it might have been slightly different however with only 2 scoring units he was always going to struggle.I think I played quite well, towards the middle of the game I was just being a little silly. Getting the Librarian out was not neccessary and I ignored the chance I had to spread out my Tac squad in turn 4 after killing the Easter Stormtroopers basically giving him my squad to kill with the Colossus. It all went to plan and strangely the -1 to reserve rolls that I had to suffer because of the master of the fleet worked in my favour as it allowed my middle scoring Tac squad to come on later in the game. It was my first game of Spearhead where I reserved quite a lot of my army. I think it had the desired effect of sucking in the mobile forces of the enemy to where my small force was deployed and leaving his flank vulnerable. Had all of my units arrived at the same time I would have set up a complete flank march and moved all my guns up the Western board edge to take down his tanks, whilst pushing my small force into the advancing parts of the enemy and hopefully capturing the middle objective. I dont think that this would have worked quite so well so I think it is a good thing that not everything had turned up at the same time.Hopefully I didnt get too much of the game wrong, the result was the same but who fired at what and when things died might be a little muddled up.Wan Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192795-ultra-meet-4/page/12/#findComment-2378639 Share on other sites
Iron-Daemon Forge
They work fine for me. Fat Bloke burger? They actually named a burger after Paul Sawyer? Is it just a patty of pressed lard between two bricks of lard? What's he been up to lately anyway, he's not still with WD is he? Yep the Fat Bloke burger is name after Paul, use to be a challenge to eat it, staff where (back in 2002) where buy a drink for anyone who ate the burger.
