ultra-meet 4

From talking to a couple of the people I believe that the idea was the next one would be down in the Southern Counties. However thinking about it that might be a little bit of a nightmare scenario in terms of getting the location for free.

I have a lead that I will be chasing though which might mean that a location not too far into Wiltshire might be acceptable. Of course if people are willing to put some cash into a pot then I might be able to secure our clubs scout hut, then we can hold it in Basingstoke.

Though again there is the Cardiff option. Sadly (for me) anywhere more than 20 miles is a no-no for the next year. I wouldnt have thought that the next one would be as early as July though you never know, if I had more financial freedom I would probably be keen.

Whats the thoughts on being a small charge, problem being if we have the usual drop out rates we risk the cost escalating and I cannot justify this as a club event and absorb costs that way without giving priority invites to my members (then it becomes less of a Ultra Meet).

Id go (aslong as wifey is not working), and dont mind paying a little.. as im travelling id have to find good, cheap accomodation too..

if we struggle with drop-outs you could always invite the regular muppets as a back up

There's plenty of hotels and travelodges around.

I'm flexible on location but (living in Chepstow) Cardiff or Wiltshire are both good for me. My availability will be more based on wife and kids rather than location!

Given that its club night tonight I will try and get some details from our events organiser. Availability and cost first, then decisions.

If we get my club it is 5 minutes from the train station (walking mind you!), there are several cheap hotels dotted around Basingstoke and the place is central to the town centre. Not much of a night life unless you enjoy some agressive locals but it should be cool. I live about 40 minutes from there so I wouldnt be able to stay for drinking or anything but there are plenty of nice places to eat (including an all you can eat buffet Chineese place which I LOVE!).

Still this is all flights of fancy if I cant secure the location for a reasonable cost. We have at least 1 Ultra player in my club who is a technophobe so if we do hold it he might be able to come. Ok thats enough for now, more when I know.

What I enjoyed most about this weekend was that of the 6 games I played, only 2 of them were against regular marines armies. The other 4 were against Necrons, Nids, Scouts and Dirty Dirty Sisters. I had in fact never played necrons or sisters before so was a great learning experience too.
Come to Caridff! An hour bus ride for me and my Wolves ;) My local club which is an hour away, we have a sizable room we play in but we are limited by our table numbers and lack of terrain but an event like this could inspire us to increase these but the transport for you guys would make this a problem.

Terrain setup

Board was littered with terrain. North West there was a big wood with some ruins to the south of that. To the North there was a big ruin with two high points, North East there was some more trees.

In the centre was a 2 Storey building with more trees to the South, a small low ruined square to the South East and more Ruins to the South West just South of the other ruins.

Deployment and Mission

Spearhead and Capture and control

I placed my objective in the low ruined squad and Phoenix placed his in the North West trees.

I rolled highest and I chose to go first.

Fists Deployment

Given that his army was a Khan army I figured he would outflank most of everything, therefore I placed my assault terminators in reserve, combat squadded my power weapon scouts placing 5 in the storm and the shotguns in outflanking. My remaining scouts infiltrated. Thus I should have the maximum amount of redeployments should he chose to deploy some stuff normally.

I placed my Storm near the central building with a straight run to his objective, my Shooty terminators were placed in the trees to the south within striking distance of my own objective. My thunderfire cannon took up residence next to my objective.

My Typhoons deployed to the East of the building and the MM Speeders deployed in the southern shadow of the building (I presume, at the moment I cant actually remember what happened to them).

Phoenix Deployment

As expected he deployed only his Predator, which was close to his objective. (note that this game was after he had just suffered at the hands of GC08, so he was wary of my scouts)

Infiltrators and scout move

I placed my Sniper scouts in the central building. I also placed my Fist scout squad in the ruins to the North.

I turbo boosted my Storm towards his predator.

Phoenix rolled a 5 to sieze the initiative and so I went first

Fist turn 1

Immediately noticed to my horror that I had not placed a single scoring unit on or even near my own objective!!!

Cursing myself I continued on hoping that this would not be a problem.

I moved my storm up to his predator and disembarked.

Combi melta took his main gun off and the assault imobilised it from memory.

Not exactly the best start but there was literally nothing else to do!

Phoenix turn 1

Nothing to see here, move along

Fist turn 2

My outflanking scouts turn up next to his objective (damn! I needed them on mine).

I move my storm up to their objective, my mm speeders move 6" and my Typhoons move 18" to give them a cover save.

My two scout units near the Predator advance on it. They assault and destroy it. I dont think I suffered any casualties to this.

Phoenix turn 2

Due to Tigarus being able to re-roll reserves we both thought it was on! However when his Khan failed to turn up despite the re roll Phoenix managed to keep everything else off the board.

So still nothing.

Fist turn 3

My assault Terminators turn up. I deep strike them near my objective to make it at least difficult to take.

I move my two scout units towards his objective and I decide to move my Fist scouts towards my own, they dont make it very far though as I was indecisive and didnt run.

The flames of his Predator caused several interesting swirls that the Scouts took note of. The Techmarine scanned the horizon with his Thunderfire cannon.

Phoenix turn 3

OH its on! Everything comes on, however the command squad are the only ones not to come on the West board edge.

The Command squad came on near the Thunderfire cannon and disembarked.

Khan and the melta squad came on 18" just north of their objective, the other squad turbo boosting across towards my Tactical Terminators. The Tactical squad came on and they disembarked not far away from his objective or my scouts.

The Landraider with Tigarus and Assault Terminators were not that far away from the south bikers but only

travelled 6".

Shooting saw my both my power weapon squad destroyed and my shotguns reduced to just 1 scout. His command squad made the mistake of killing the Thunderfire cannon but failing to kill the Techmarine (more on this later).

All in all I was a little taken back and completely on the wrong side with my scoring units.

Fist turn 4

Finally he is here, though I was probably more successful when he wasnt. Hmm now what do I do, press the assault or consolidate on my own objective which is currently unclaimed. Go for the assault and hope for the best.

My techmarine feels the fury of the Omnissiah and throws himself at the enemy. The Assault Terminators couldnt match his speed so they just sat on the objective.

My Typhoons poked their heads around the building and pointed their noses towards the bikes with Khan. My MM Landseeders moved to engage the southern bikes and the Shooty terminators moved towards the bikes as well. My CC scouts just moved back to their initial positions (feeling a little confused by the orders given from above).

Shooting saw the southern bike squad reduced to just 1 bike due to a combination of MM, Storm Bolters, Cyclone missiles and sniper rifles (I incorrectly got Phoenix to take a pinning test, despite him turbo boosting - only read that was wrong Sunday morning). These bikes broke and ran to within 6" of my surviving Scout on their objective.

My Typhoons only managed to down 1 bike from Khans squad. The Techmarine melted a member of the Command squad.

In combat my Techmarine charged the Command squad and flattend two of them without loss. They held (for a more dramatic rendition of this read here).

Phoenix turn 4

Movement started with his remaining fleeing bike heading for home.

Khan and his dudes moved up to the ruins where my scouts were hiding. His tactical squad advanced towards my remaining scout. His Crusader moved towards my MM landspeeders, its guns twitching menacingly. His Command squads Rhino bugs out and heads for the Typhoons.

Shooting saw my last scout dead. Khan and his boys managed to take down a Typhoon by imobilising it. The other speeders fared less well and both were flaming wrecks by the time the crusader had cycled through its gunfire.

Assault saw my Techmarine down the last of the command squad without damage (the Emperor was with me that day).

Fist turn 5

Oh dear this isnt going so well.

I reason that even in 2 turns the assault terminators arent going to be doing anything so they essentially just disappear from the game. My shooty terminators move to get a better angle on Khan and his posse. My Typhoons also move to get clear shots. My Scouts get ready for assault.

My Techmarine heads towards the Rhino.

Shooting sees Khan catch a Krak and fail his 4+, two other bikers share his fate.

My techmarine claims the Storm bolter from the Rhino.

Assault sees the bikers dead and my Scouts advancing to their position.

Phoenix turn 5

The Crusader beaches himself trying to get to my Scouts so they all unload and look menacing. Tactical marines move up to the objective and their Rhino parks just to the south of it.

His rhino decides to tank shock my Techmarine (because its fun), I accept the death or glory (because I am not going to be winning the game with my Techmarine). I penetrate and explode it! I even survive the blast. Thats why you dont mess with the Omnissiah!!!!

Over on the other side of the table my Typhoons are both killed by a load of gunfire from the Crusader and Vortex of Doom from Tigarus (who also cast Nullzone and Quickening).

My scouts were quite mauled by gunfire but a couple of the survivors held.

The game continued to turn 6

Fist turn 6

I did all that I could, moved my Terminators to engage the other terminators and my scouts moved to engage the Rhino and hopefully get within contesting of the objective, many a straw was clutched at the end of this game.

I managed to get a charge in on the Rhino and the Terminators.

My Terminator squad was mauled but I did take a terminator out on their side. Assault against the vehicle was rather pointless but I didnt want much out of it.

Phoenix turn 6

Without discussing the details of it my scouts were wiped to the man by that Crusader and my Terminators were eventually killed though Tigarus did wound himself with a perils of the warp and I think he killed himself.

Result

Phoenix - 1
Wan - 0

Weird game not having any enemy to kill until turn 3. Phoenix played really well, the pressure was always on me to come get his objective and I will be honest in saying that was never going to happen. He was really unlucky to have angered my Techmarine into going on a murderous rampage, rolling 2 1's for successive powerfist attacks was just bad luck.

Basically though I was an idiot in this game, not only did I leave my objective unclaimed but I had a unit of snipers not 12" from it the whole game and didnt think about it until the next day!!!! Talk about not seeing what is under you own nose.

Truely funny game though and Phoenix deserves all the credit for the win. He also deserves a bravery award, his colour scheme is really nice but Yellow on grey is a little more challenging than I would like  (though hopefully the Deneb Stone will make painting the Yellow a little easier).

Terrain setup

Board was littered with terrain. North West there was a big wood with some ruins to the south of that. To the

North there was a big ruin with two high points, North East there was some more trees.

In the centre was a 2 Storey building with more trees to the South, a small low ruined square to the South East

and more Ruins to the South West just South of the other ruins.

There was a small hill in the South West Corner.

Deployment and Mission

Pitched Battle and Annihilation

Cadarn rolled highest and decided to go second (he instantly regretted it)

Fist deployment

Given that I had just played on this board I decided to get a different perspective and deployed in the North. I placed my Thunderfire Cannon in the big ruin, my Lascannon Dread was to the South East corner of the same ruin. slightly obscured by a broken bit of building.

My two Tacticals deployed to the West of the ruin in a column. My MM speeders deploy in the shadow of the large building in the centre. My Typhoons and Rifleman dread deploy behind the big ruin on the board edge. My Sternguard deploy behind my Lascannon dread.

Eldar Deployment

Seeing as he had just given up the first turn potential battering of me Cadarn decided to deploy conservatively (in the standard Eldar way). He deployed in the South West corner slightly behind the hill (which was not big enough to give him a cover save).

The two wave serpents flanked the Falcon (with Fire Dragons) making a wall of eldar tanks (Eastern tank had the Farseer in it), slightly behind but still very visable were the Shining Spears, to the East were the two Vipers.

Cadarn did not manage to sieze the initiative.

Fist turn 1

I zoomed my Tactical Rhinos up to the large building edge. My MM turbo boosted to the small ruin to the South East of the main building. My Typhoons shifted position slightly to get a bead on the Tanks. My Rifleman moved into cover to get a better angle. My Sternguards Rhino (with Librarian) drive behind the trees.

Shooting saw the start of my frustration called Eldar Tanks :( Despite a seemingly bucked load of penetrate and glance results I believe the best I achieved was to stop the Falcon from shooting.

I termor shelled his Shining spears, due to scatter rolls I also managed to hit the Falcon and Eastern Wave Serpent.

Given the extreme range I think I did fairly well.

Eldar turn 1

Cadarn started his turn by forgetting his Farseer so he didnt roll any crazy powers.

He starting moving his Shining Spears North along the Western table edge, however the Thunderfire hampered this twice. Firstly it killed the Exarch because of the Dangerous terrain rolls and secondly because he was not able to turbo boost.

Neither his Falcon or his Wave Serpent imobilised themselves. The Eastern Wave Serpent jumped onto the hill along with the other one. The Falcon dived along the Western board edge just North of the Shining spears.

His Vipers repositioned to get a shot at my Lascannon Dread (if memory serves).

Twin linked missiles rained on the Thunderfire from both Wave Serpents however the Techmarine and his cannon survived. The Dreadnought was similarly untouched.

Fist turn 2

My memory is a bit sketchy about mid game so take with a pinch of salt unless Cadarn can remember more

My Sternguard moved up to the trees, my Rifleman moved up to get decent LOS. My MM Speeders flew through to be just West of the Southern Ruin and South of the trees.

My Lascannon dread repositioned slightly as did my Typhoon.

Shooting saw my Thunderfire cannon hit the Shining spears with tremor rounds again (more to stop them from turbo boosting than anything else). My Rifleman and Lascannon dreads pound the Wave serpent shaking it (though I am not quite confident about this).

My Typhoons and MM speeders kill one of the Vypers.

Eldar turn 2

Shining Spears take another casualty whilst trying to get towards my Sternguard (still not within shooting range).

Falcon moves to North West corner, Wave Serpent jumps level with trees. Vyper moves back towards other Wave Serpent who stays put.

Farseer tries to Doom my Sternguard but rolls an 11, he guides the Vyper.

Shooting sees my Thunderfire cannon get destroyed by the Vyper and my Sternguards Rhino destroyed by some wave serpent shooting. My Sternguard get out and are not pinned.

Fist turn 3

I move my MM speeders towards the remaining Vyper. I move my two Tactical Rhinos, both in the open between the Wave Serpent on the hill and my ruin. My Sternguard move towards the Shining spears. Everything else positions to take out the Falcon.

Shooting saw my two Rhinos pop smoke. My MM speeders failed to kill his Vyper, my Lascannon Dread stunned the Falcon and I believe I might have imobilised it at this point as well. My Sternguard wiped out the Shining Spears.

Eldar turn 3

Cadarn fails to doom my Sternguard, thanks to the Librarian. However he does guide his posse of Dire Avengers.

His Dire Avengers disembarked from both their Wave Serpents as does the Fire Dragons from his Falcon. The Fire dragons move up to the Sternguard as does the Western dire avengers. The Southern Dire Avengers advance on my MM speeders. The Vyper moves towards my Rhinos.

Shooting sees 1 MM speeder destroyed and the other one shaken thanks to some crazy bladestorm action. The Sternguard hold their ground under unrelenting fire though, between his blade storming Avengers and melta wielding Fire Dragons I lost all but 3 Sternguard (Fisty and two normal) and my Librarian.

Fist turn 4

I moved my Missile Tactical West to place them within rapid fire range of the Northern Avengers. My MM Tactical moved up to engage the Vyper.

My MM landspeeder turbo boosted out of range. My Sternguard advanced towards the downed Falcon whilst my Librarian moved off to engage the fire dragons. My Dreads converged on the Northern Wave serpent.

Shooting saw me knocking a missile launcher off the Northern Wave Serpent and stunning it. The Northern Avengers were destroyed through a combination of the Tactical marines and the Typhoons.

Assault saw me kill his Falcon with my Sternguard and kill a couple of Fire Dragons without losing a wound on my Librarian. I also killed the Vyper with plasma weapons and bolters from my other Tactical squad.

Eldar turn 4

Dire Avengers and Farseer move up towards the Tactical marines with the Plasmas. Shooting sees 1 tactical marine fall to the Wave serpent.

His Fire Dragons fall in assault.

Last couple of turns

As my memory has completely failed me in details this is what eventually happened. My Librarian finally imobilised the Northern Wave Serpent. Cadarn almost killed my tactical squad with plasmas by blade storming it to oblivion (1 guy survived who hid in his Rhino).

I believe at the end of the game I had lost 2 kill points but I believe that Cadarn only had an imobilised Wave Serpent and his Dire Avengers.

My thoughts

I remember thinking when I was packing up, I really need to check that this list is 1500 points! It just holds too much firepower for its level. Having played Eldar before I am always shocked by their ability to put the hurt down at range so I am feeling quite happy that my list seems to be able to compete on that level.

Cadarn was unlucky to have given away first turn. I suspect that had he been able to take the battle to me on turn 1 the game would have been a lot more balanced. It was also at teh end of a long day and we were purposefully going quickly (hence the lack of details I remember) in order to get the game in before the place closed.

Still it was a lot of fun. I remember Idaho coming across on turn 4, looking at Cadarns force and saying "I am sorry but I cant feel sorry for Eldar", which I thought was quite funny (old war wounds and memories from games gone by it would appear).

I think had we more time and if Cadarns previous game had been a little quicker it might have been different. Still I think this might be the last outing for this 1500 point list outside of tournament games. I think I have got its play style under control and although it is very competative I think it might be a tad unfair for pick up games (sounds big headed but those who have met me should know that I dont like to be at the forefront of things and I tend to enjoy close fought battles rather than just winning).

Still hopefully Cadarn will remember more details and will be able to point out where I am lying to the community ;)

Last game to write up, hopefully I do it before all the details of that game leave me.

Wan
As such I'm happy to head west for another event.

How far west are we talking here? Chicago?

If I had the money I would love to do a US one :(

I think Capt. Palladorus was offering to pay to fly us all out to Chicago if we had the next one there wasn't he? At least that's how I read it ;)

Had a good time at this meet, while I lost both games, they were still fun to play. Made a number of mistakes, and had some rotten luck with my reserve rolls, but it was all good :P

Hopefully next time I will be able to bring a much nicer list, assuming I dont melt all of my new models again :(

I look forward to getting a few games in with those I have not had the chance to play against yet, I will most likely be at the next meet, wherever that might be.

Hey guys, glad you all had an awesome time!!!

Thanks for putting the work into those battle reports Wan, excellent work.

Im up for the next meet this time(aslong as its before the end of September) and dont mind putting some money towards getting a good place for us to play. Basingstoke is fine with me, will involve an overnight stay but thatll be fine.
