Kelvigs Killers!

Good evening all,

In December 2008 I popped over to my Mums house and was poking around in the loft when I came across my old unpainted Space Wolves army that I’d received for Xmas some 10+years ago.

When I was younger I’d walk past a GW store and would always stop and look at the painted mini’s and dreamt of having my own fully painted army. I dug around a little more and found all my old paint pots – opened them up and found that none of them had dried up and worked fine.

I took it all back home with me and a few weeks later joined B&C (see start date on left), and started painting up this long forgotten gem of an army. Some 14 months later, after stealing precious hours here and there, I have finished painting up a 1500pt army list!

There still remains the odd bit here and there to do, such as shoulder transfers on some mini’s and putting a purity seal on them – but I’m so chuffed at finishing the army at long last I wanted to share it with everyone in the Fang.

I always like seeing everyone else’s painted mini’s so I also wanted to post my pics as a way of saying thanks to everyone for putting up with my repetitive questions like “what colour is a Wolf Priests bike?”, “What colour is a Wolf Priests shoulder pads?”, “what symbols go on such and such’s shoulder or knee pads?” etc etc. I’d always said I’d post pics of the finished models so at long last I’ve done so.

They’re by no means pro painted, but I’m chuffed with them all the same. I was experimenting with different methods and it took me a little while to come to a style of painting I was happy with – ongoing I intend to add more units and hopefully they’ll become more uniform in their appearance.

First of all here is my “All Comers” army list I’m using:

• Rune Priest “Kelvig” (Living Lightning & Murderous Hurricane)

• Wolf Priest “Hangst” with Bike (Power Weapon)

• Iron Priest with 2 Thrall-Servitors

• 5 GH with PG & Razorback

• 9 GH with MG, PW, Rhino + WG with PF with CombiM

• 9 GH with MG, PW, Rhino + WG with PF with CombiM

• 4 Swift Claws with PF + 1x HB AB + WG with Bike, PF & CombiM

• 6 Long Fangs with 4xML & 1x HB

Pred with AutoC & 2 LCs

• Vindicator

Everything is WYSIWYG except the dozer blade on one of the Rhino’s (I don’t want to try and take it off and accidently damage the tank).

I may at some point tweak the list to have T5 Cyber Wolves rather than T3 Servitors – but I’ll see how I get on and if the servitors servo arms come in handy.

Here’s the pics [sorry the camera doesn't do very well at close ups :(]...

Complete Army...

I did play a few games with differing lists, which included an Iron Priest on a Thunderwolf mount with cyber wolves, and 10 skyclaws with a JP Wolf Priest, Whirlwind and a Lone Wolf – but for various reasons they were removed and the army above adopted. Some of these units I’d already painted and are below...

[sorry again for the bad pics]

A few people may frown at the list, but it works well for me and has a good synergy. The Rune Priest sticks with the 5GH with Plasma squad and Living Lightning’s targets whilst holding objectives. This free’s up the Razorback to carry the Iron Priest to the front lines. In other games the RP will ride in the razorback to get close to enemy psykers so he can nullify their powers. Other games the razorback sits at the back to protect the Long Fangs, with the Iron Priest sticking behind the Vindi to repair its big gun when it is inevitably blown off.

Most things fly forward whilst the heavies pound away from the back – making it difficult for the enemy to prioritise. I’ve not had an opportunity to play this list with the Swiftclaws yet but I’m excited to do so - I intend on using them only against infantry, rather than as tank hunters.

Depending on the usefulness of the 135pt Wolf Priest, I may swap him out for something else – probably an Iron Priest on TWM with 2 Cyberwolves (but this depends on GW making a TWM kit).

I like this list because it can cope with many different scenarios and opponents, and has lots of threats across the board. I like to think that I’ve not invested too many points in any one area, and the army can’t be crippled by a lucky shot like it can against a Land Raider list.

Hopefully I’ll get a few games in over the coming weeks and will try and post bat rep’s of Kelvig’s sagas when I do.

Cheers all – Ales are in the corner, help yourself :woot:

I'm not a big fan of the hot pink.

Also, the "grammar nazi" in my has to point out that words or names that end in an S simply get an apostrophe when in possessive form, instead of an apostrophe-s. So it should be "Russ' Fury" not "Russ's Fury." I do like the paint job on the siege shield, though.

mabe the driver of the tank has a lisp. or is half snake....

also shouldn't your sentece be, "the "grammar nazi" in me"?

just pokin' fun :)

Hey, your story is almost the same as mine! I just had a Grey Hunter Squad and a Land speeder painted 10 years ago, and in the last 2 years I picked them up again, got a small army painted and now I'm playing them from time to time. Even your list is not far from mine!

Very good looking army btw!

Dude, I love seeing the Old School metal and vehicle models. Space Wolves were my first real 40K army that I put a lot of time and effort in. This was about 12 years ago! I like the placement of that rear end bit on top of the rhino! I wish I thought of that back then.

They look great!

cheers for all the feedback guys.

looks good mate! although i'm not convinced of the pink, is it red in real life?

Yes it's red in real life, the quality of the pictures my camera takes is shocking. Funnily enough I've now dropped the Vindi from my list - I played two games on Friday night and narrowly lost one, and got tabled in the other...

Both times I came up against a Land Raider, the Vindi went forward into 24" range, scattered the shot, then got blown up by the Raider's Multi-Melta. I've kept it in my list longer than I normally would have due to the paint scheme being one of my favourites, but it's been a waste really.

When the gun got blown off in one game, I had the Iron Priest nearby and didn't realise that even if it was repaired I couldn't fire it straight away (which I thought I could) - didn't matter in the end as I rolled a 2 - both the Vindi and the Iron Priest bought it the next turn.

So I've now swapped Vindi out, changed the HB Razorback for the TLLC version, added a Landspeeder with MM & HF and swapped the two servitors for two cyberwolves (the servitors meant all to wound rolls for the unit were T3, the wolves will make everyones T5).

Looks like I'm back to painting again! Look out for some questions about converting Cyberwolves...
