eschonle
Hail, Brothers Im adding a Predator tank to my ranks and wanted to magnetize my sponsons and turret for greater practicality and to save some money. I was just wondering what size rare earth magnets to use in the sponsons and turret, and if anyone has any tips, they'd share them with me. Thanks in advance :P Eric Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192969-rare-earth-magnets/ Share on other sites
Greywolf
I get mine here: http://www.magcraft.com/products/disc/index.html I find the 0.125 x 0.063 to fit most of my modeling needs. You can get them at other places such as: http://store.miniwargaming.com/category/rare-earth-magnets/ They are listed as 1/8 x 1/16 here And: http://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=10 I have had good results from all of these vendors. Yeti
Another fan of KJ magnetics. Huge range of sizes and shapes, your can track your shipment and the service has always been good. As far as sizes go, 1/8 x 1/16 should work well ... at least it worked for mine! eschonle
Thanks Yeti and Greywolf for the heads up! I ordered from K&J as they had the best deal for what I was looking for. I have to admit, I am lost on how to actually go about magnetizing the sponsons and turret, so if you all have any idea on that I'll buy them a round of Ale and Mutton! I am in the midst of trying different ways. But hey, I am trying to find magnets small enough to drill out hands and magnetize meltas etc as well. sadly the smallest I can find doesnt leave much room for error. a fraction of a millimeter right or left and I burst through the hands. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192969-rare-earth-magnets/#findComment-2293998 Share on other sites

pchappel
Sort of related, what size magnets do you folks use for something along the size of a Terminator arm for weapon swaps that way? Thanks! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192969-rare-earth-magnets/#findComment-2294118 Share on other sites
CainTheHunter
Sort of related, what size magnets do you folks use for something along the size of a Terminator arm for weapon swaps that way? Thanks! I've used 3 mm x 0,5 mm ones. They fix the arms - PF and SB, but they have tendency to do downwards a bit. I'm going to try 2 mm x 1 mm for a firmer contact - these were strong enough to fix a Plasma Cannon for dread, so they must be sufficiant for anything big - like storm shields, can openers etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192969-rare-earth-magnets/#findComment-2294194 Share on other sites
Yeti
Here try this, it helped me http://apnu.runswithscissors.com/convertib...dator-howto.pdf Looks like a decent tutorial. The only comment I'd make is not to do magnet to magnet to hold the pieces together. I learned the hard way to go magnet to metal. The problem is that once you have many different models that are magnetized you'll want to switch the bits from one to another ... or you just mix up the pieces. With magnet to magnet you can end up with polarity problems and the interchangeable parts won't necesarily work together. You don't have that problem with magnet to metal. For example, when magnetizing the turret, I put the magnets in the turret (same as the tutorial), but instead of also putting magnets in the weapon I just put slices of a 1/8" metal rod. Since it's all plastic parts the hold is plenty strong enough. And to be honest, they are the smallest ones you are going to want to work with. If you'd like to try them out before committing, PM me your address and I'll drop a couple in the post for you. I have tons! LOL ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/192969-rare-earth-magnets/#findComment-2295219 Share on other sites
