In the Company of Shadows

Hello B&C viewers I've been a lurker for awhile now and have recently decided to start a log in an attempt to stay semi-motivated with the hobby. I'll be painting and converting units for my Company of Shadows Chaos marine force. Currently I have somewhere around 3000 points worth of Chaos and only a small portion has paint on it. The closest thing I have to being done are a 6 man squad of Chosen. These first pics are kinda bad, I'm just waiting for my battery devouring camera to charge so I can take some better versions.

Pretty nice! Lotsa horns skulls and bone. Nice bases. Me likes even tho they are awfully devoid of color. You can get some armies to work that way with enough variety in modeling, but I like some bright colors here and there to show em off, course we are dealing with the Company of Shadows... so no bright colors there. :)

I was considering doing terror markings on the helmets but I don't know if I trust my freehand enough.

In my opinion the Possessed kit is worth buying just for parts.

I have a lot more ahead of me to do. Next up is terminators and a dreadnought

I never thought that I'd see Company of the Shadow marines, yet here they are! (awesome username you got as well)

 

Your existing models look great. It might be the lack of light in the pictures but they do look a bit plain in terms of armour surface vs. colour scheme.

Do you plan on incorporating the writhing faces of the damned part of their fluff somehow? it might help liven them up. :)

Thanks Brother Nihm. I'm going to try a damned souls pattern on my test marine and see how that goes. I'm not comfortable with freehand usually but the only way to get better is practice.

Speaking of things that need practice, my picture taking quality continues to be questionable but at least I've got some to show. All of these are PIP

Chaos are my next SM army and im loving these guys long time!

 

I like the colours actually, they are very 'real' if that makes any sense at all? the colours are plausable for what/who they are and what they represent.

I haven't forgotten about you Project Log!!!

I need to give myself a weekly deadline or something. Though it's been awhile, I haven't stopped working on the Shadow Company. The first Dreadnought is almost complete and I did some testing on a dead souls technique for the armor. I'm not completely sold on it yet but it has promise.

You may have already noticed a pic deficiency and that will be addressed as soon as I can get a proper way to light and photo the models.

His skin needs some highlights and of course my hand needs to be steadier for the picture taking portion. He's making good progress though.

So far I feel like the picture quality hasn't been that great and I'd like to get some feedback on how to make the pictures better. To that end I re-took pictures of one of my Chosen.

OK, so maybe I'm just a freak and a leper, but I've never really been keen on all the damn horns on chaos models - they look impractical and ungainly, sometimes even ugly if placed and modeled poorly. My main problem if I were a follower of Chaos wouldn't be that my soul was damned to be a plaything of the gods, but that I'd be spending most of my time filing the horns off of my helmet.

 

That said, these models prove there really is a place for gratuitious use of random spikiness. They look really cool and suitable, not least because the paleness of the horns contrasts so well with the dusky armour, and serves to disrupt the potential for the models to look too dark and uniform. The individual placement of the spikes and horns also gives them a bit more personality and individuality. That was my first reaction. Really well done.
