What to build for the store

I like the idea of the nids, or perhaps some Chaos Daemons. Perhaps have a group of wolves defending a building in the middle...Long Fangs up top, Grey Hunters in cover around the outside, perhaps some Blood Claws or Wolf Guard Terminators in a spearhead thrust into the "sea of enemies" heading towards a "big" model, Hive Tyrant, Daemon Prince, whatever.

Alternatively, if you had the models, a line of Guard, compete with tanks/artillery, supported by Wolves, against either an Ork or Nid horde could be pretty impressive too.

Of course if you didn't want to do any additional painting you could just go with the Wolves vs Black Legion that you have. Perhaps as you (or someone) suggested with the traitors surrounded by the Wolves to show the might of the Allfather and Russ.

Just my $.02

Id definitely do the nidz over Daemons- most parents are ok with evil space bugs, demons on the other hand get religious connotations in their, and you dont want to get parents spooked.

This is off topic but i got to say that this is the strangest thing I have read on a forum, that people and with there unknowledge can relate daemons from a sci-fi tabletop game with religion and get spooked by it, its idiotic....

On topic.. Like Spacefrisian said, a 300 style combat would be cool.. like a grey hunter pack and some TDA wolf guards against hundreds of nidz..

Numerous religions have demons in them, some of those religions contain followers who do not want to talk about them, or have their children overtly exposed to knowledge of them... much like citizens of the imperium for that matter :P. While it may not make sense to me what I do know is that allowing that part to be overlooked for a while so the kids can get into and enjoy the game tends to inrich their lives and once a few hundred bucks is installed most parents who would initially object will look the other when when their kid explains that they dont like demons, they kill them.

Im not sure about hundreds, but obviously outnumbered would probly be practical.

To answer an earlier question, it will be a 360 display. As such, I really like the idea of having the terrain elevated. I'm wondering what to do for terrain now.

I'd like to try my hand at a snow covered board. What do you guys think? Snow covered cityscape? Maybe I should use this case as a showcase for the planetstrike bastion, landing pad, etc?

No one around here seems to play planetstrike. I'd really like to get people interested in that, it seems very cool.

We played Planetstrike once. Due to lack of knowledge of the rules, the attackers pretty much crushed the defenders. I'm sure we can try again sometime.

Having introduced 6 kids to 40K at 10yrs old, I took this seriously, and discouraged them from collecting Daemons, and Chaos too, for the reasons stated. Searchy for a thread 2 years ago.

Attracting kids is the easy bit; not upsetting the folks is more important.

Are you aiming for a younger clientele, who spend lots of (parents') money, or for older, cooler customers?

If the former, consider child safety, CRB clearance etc, as if parents feel happy to leave kids there whilst they go to other shops, you'll be tapping a rich market; parental guilt translates into present buying!

If you're aiming older, why not run a painting competition, finalists get their models displayed, giving you free displays!

Clean carpets, music from films (Hans Zimmer creates atmosphere without noise pollution), fresh air, bright lighting.

Good luck!

I don't disagree with any of this. I do think, however, that the groups you not above need not be mutually exclusive. I haven't gamed regularly in many (12+) years. My children became interested in the game through the Dawn of War computer game and I dusted off and repurchased many of the minis I had years ago and began playing with the kids.

When I first approached the local gaming group, I was pleasantly suprised on how kid friendly the ENTIRE group was. This is one of the primary reasons I've decided to open a store. There is NO good gaming space in this area. I want a gaming space that is friendly and welcoming to all. My belief is that the gaming with kids and without kids will sort itself out as the younger gamers simply will not be around as late. If need be, we can set up times in the store that unsupervised children will not be allow (after 8 or 9, for example). In either case, I'm sure it will work out. Our store is to be open much later for gamers than the others in the area, so I don't think it will be a big deal.

Back on your topic, I can see where some parents could get creeped out by the daemons in the game. It is much the same when you introduce them to the games in general. This is a stigma that allows them to believe their child will become a satan worshiper just be involvement in GW games, Magic and D&D. Some of these things need to be introduced to the more squemish slowly to allow tem to become more comfortable.

Thanks for reminding me of that.

That's what originally got me thinking about the display. I don't have plans that are anywhere near that ambitious, though. I also want to use minis that are ready for tabletop play. I'm trying to show case what you can do and use in your army. I'm not ready to start pieces that will be painted for and remain in a diorama.

Keep your dioramas & pretty things small, leave space for playing. Shelves and tall cabinets, then basic tables and robust scenery. 2' x 3' tables are big enough for a 20minute skirmish introduction, and can be joined together for the evening games.

Flip over for the bloodbowl pitch!

Id say if you decide to do a Wolves/marines vs tyranids diarama that a bastion would make a good centerpeice, with perhaps an aegis defense line to bolster it with some ruins.

Itll promote the planetstrike stuff, and itll look epic if you do it well... and with your painting skills Im sure it will be.

Great to hear you are getting a store!

As some people have mentioned, don't bother with a diorama. Unless it's done to a massive standard taking days of your precious time it will always look a bit amateurish. Better off doing those models to a decent standard for demo games.

What you could consider is a novelty item instead, something big that is hard to get hold of as your display piece. More for people to say wow and get excited about or start talking about. I'm thinking a titan from forgeworld or similar. Maybe if you can swing it even a custom piece such as a really big space marine.

Good Luck!
