Ebon Lions Chapter Log

Power Fist

Like many “lost” chapters, the exact moment of the Ebon Lions split from the First Founding Space Wolves chapter is shrouded in legend, mystery, and contradiction. It is believed the Ebon Lions are, or at least originally were, three Battle Barges worth of Space Wolves, splintered from the primogenetor’s Chapter following the Horus Heresy. Pursuing the Emperor’s Children deep into the reaches of known space, the Barges were considered destroyed, the Space Marines aboard were considered deceased, and were honored on Terra as heroes.

However, the Ebon Wolves were not deceased, and the Barges were not destroyed. The Ebon Wolves took up residence on Narsine, in the Agrippa sector, and set about building a Space Wolf stronghold. Over the course of time, with the disconnect from their First Founding Chapter, and through the weathering of time and space, the Chapter’s repository of knowledge and tactics began to erode and evolve. The wolf, praised for its cunning and determination, slowly evolved into the lion, revered for its fierce nature and powerful presence. The ice lions that stalked the frozen tundra in massive prides became a substitute for the wolves of Fenris, and the Space Marines began learning to live and fight with the lions by their sides. Before long, all ties with the Space Wolves had been lost to the Warp and the ravages of time.

Although Space Wolf combat doctrines still dominate the Ebon Lions in terms of battlefield tactics and organizational structure, a millennia-long struggle against the brutal Dark Eldar Kabal of Eternal Sorrow, in which the Ebon Lions have been the only protection for their home world of Narsine against the repeated slave raids by the Dark Eldar pirates, has turned the Chapter into something different entirely. Ebon Lion prides are brutally efficient warriors, used to being outgunned and outnumbered, and are more than a little feral and zealous in bringing the word of the Emperor swiftly and, often, fatally.

Strike first! Strike fast! Strike hard! Fortis in Fide!

About four years ago, I had finally finished painting my original Ebon Lion Space Wolves chapter. They were maybe the most beautiful army I've ever painted. And then, some life events happened (as they do), and I had to sell them. Totally broke my heart. Four years later, I am finally able to restart the chapter and hopefully build my collection back up to where it was when I had to sell it...

I am going to be posting pics of my finished army over the new few days, as I find time to take and edit more pictures. But I wanted to see what you thought of the army so far...

Here's the whole thing, on its display board (You can click the pic for a giant shot):

A few close-ups:

Pridefather Christophe (subbing in for Logan Grimnar) and Lexicanium Sarfati (subbing in for a Rune Priest):

One squad of Lionguard Terminators (they like to be called Those Who Sloggeth on Foot):

Five Multimelta Longfang Terminators (but not really) with a naked Cappie (and the Hammer of Narsine in the background):

And Brother Captain Milano, with Chaska and Mota (Lone Wolf, with mandatory CF/SS and 2 Fen Wolves):

And today, the beginning of the real pics.

This army is painted in what I call "six foot painting" style. That is, up close, you might say, "Wow...those are highlighted pretty hard." And you'd be correct. They are. That's because at about six feet, which is where my opponent will be standing, they really, really pop. The closer you get, the more harsh the highlights look. But I still think that, even close up, they still look pretty good. :D

So. Anyway. Closeups.

First up, Lexicanium Sarfati:

And my Lone Wolf, Brother Captain Milano, with Mota and Chaska. I wanted him to look like he was pushing forward against the wind, all on his own. Kind of a nice effect, I think.:

RAWR!:P

Comments and such are, of course, welcome. More pics tomorrow, I hope.

Nice - some very cool imagery with these guys. I'm not sure I like the beakie helmets with the terminator armor, but it certainly makes for a distinct look that makes them stand out.

Any chance you could add some close-ups of the Pridefather? And where are those lion models from?

I think the army looks really good regardless of what some might say about the highlighting. They look great up close and that doesn't really change just because the highlighting is intense. I really like the snow on top of their armor as well as the base, it really helps to make them fit in with the base and the larger layout you had them all in for the first picture.

Overall pretty cool, although I think you could cut down a little bit on detail in some places, things are a bit busy and tough to make out at times.

You may want to check out Scibor minis online, they have recently released a lot of lion based shoulder pads, helmets etc, might be great for you!

Interesting look to the force. Well, painted, and that's a nice display board.

My one critique would be that they look a little "overburdened" with all that extra stuff on their armor. The beakie headed Terminaotr is staring at his feet in a "So heavy...I can barely stand!" look.

I also wonder how snow manages to accumulate that deep on their bodies.

He's not staring at his feet. He's "trudging." ;) I had this picture in my head of one guy and his two lions stomping into the wind, with his head down and just putting one foot in front of the other. I think he looks like he's trudging against the wind. It's actually one of my favorite pieces in the army...

Anyway, some new snaps for today:
