Shinzaren
I apologize Brother Melice. It was not my intention to come across as rude or snide as I did. I simply wanted to point out that I tried to help the same narrative on the other post, and was having some.... difficulties.... getting my points across, which made me cranky. I should not have reacted so sharply to your post. I am sorry. Aside from that, I can only reiterate here what I mentioned in your brother's post. The backround and the tabletop are so incredibly separate it is almost impossible to believe they are linked at all. Never ever ever ever use tabletop scenarios as justification for the fluff, they just don't work :/ No worries about your brother either, I vented my frustration a little harshly on him as well, which I am also sorry for. I have 2 brothers of my own, both who play 40k(One UM, and another Chaos), so I know all about discussions on the hobby and the world that go in circles :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193623-desert-roughnecks-company/page/2/#findComment-2462981 Share on other sites
Philip S
@ Brother Melice - as mentioned before the Deathwatch are not a chapter. All the marines within the Deathwatch belong to chapters, and remain loyal to their chapter. Think of a Deathwatch marine as a specialist like a Librarian (blue armour), Techmarine (red armour), Chaplin (black armour) or Apothecary (White armour). All these specialists have armour colour different to the rest of the chapter but all have (at least) their Chapter symbol on the Chapter's original armour colour on their shoulder. The Deathwatch armour is black and silver not because they are a new chapter, but the marine has been given a specialist role. Part of this specialist role is to report to the Inquisition and work with other Deathwatch marines from other chapters. The Deathwatch marines may look similar, and in action it may give the impression that this is a chapter, but is really is no different to seeing a group of Techmarines (all red) from different Chapters or a group of Librarians (all blue) from many Chapters temporarily working together (though this is obviously much rarer than Deathwatch collaborations!). At no point is a Deathwatch marine changing to another chapter. ++++ Getting back to your concept - yes you could have all these separate chapters unite and form a new chapter, and do what you want the to, but it is out of character and it gives the impression of wild renegades or even suffering from chaos influence. A marine does not what to do what you suggest, and certainly wouldn't do it off their own back. To get around this you could invent, as I take you to suggest, a new role like 'Deathwatch' but not Deathwatch, to join the other roles the marines take on (Techmarine, Librarian etc), but you are inventing an whole new role. This is a massive change to background. The role you would seem to be proposing is not very distinctive when compared to the ones we already have. The would basically be specialist desert fighter role or survivalist role, but after that it gets difficult to explain and probably very hard to justify. It would also have to be common to all chapters for all the marines of all the chapters to take on the role. I suppose the Codex could have a built in role for marines who are abandoned, but why go to all the trouble of re-painting their armour and where did they get the paint? Spare parts etc. If armour and parts are scavenged or cannibalised from fallen brothers they are likely to leave the armour the same colour as it's not really theirs. It seems likely the marines of all the Chapters would cooperate and form an alliance in a similar vein to Deathwatch, but they would remain independent, they would retain their colours. Marines like the diversity and would probably allow the various marines to fall into their favoured roles on the battlefield tactics wise (White Scars of scouting, Iron hand making stuff, Ultramarines waving books about and telling everyone they are doing it wrong etc).
