nurgling6688
as promised here is an update, i have finished the two pilots which means its almost time to start on the rest of it. In the pics you can see how the main fuselage doesnt line up very well and is uneven, don't worry, that brown stuff is gonna get more work done to it. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/cockpit2.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/cockpit1.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/page/2/#findComment-2307954 Share on other sites
nurgling6688
Alright, so by luck my local hobby store had the FW weathering powders so i picked up the whole group and decided to test them out. This is a rhino that has been refurbished, pretty much redid the metal, red, white, battle damage and the free hand. Tell me what you think. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/rhino5.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/rhino4.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/rhino3.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/rhino2.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/rhino1.jpg The roman numeral on the front is the company number and the one on the top is squad. So this is for first tactical squad of 4th company. I tried spraying it with matte varnish after using the weathering powders like it said to do but that seemed to have blasted away most of it, so i added more and am letting it sit over night before i spray it again. winterdyne
When sealing on weathering powders, you need to be really light with the varnish! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/page/2/#findComment-2309944 Share on other sites

Dosjetka
Theses are beautiful. Those pilots look like they're arguing. Pilot 1: "We go left, Bert!" Pilot 2: "No, I want to go right, Barney!" nurgling6688
So i thought i would put a bit of my Chapters history up here, as it gave me an excuse to actually write it down. This is just their founding and a general overview of important moments. I plan on going into more detail about their home world, their mysterious time during the age of apostasy, the Tyranid invasion, the 4th company (my company :P ), and certain characters such as one of those new recruits i mention at the end. Sons of Dorn Founding: The Sons of Dorn were founded from Imperial Fist gene-seed in M34. They were an experiment in the creation of astartes chapters, although their gene-seed was stable the founding was unorthodox. They were not simply created, given time to rise in numbers and given a Chapter Master from within their own ranks. The Sons were going to be the embodiment of the Imperial Fist legion, from before the Heresy. They needed to embody all of the aspects that had made the legion great, they needed the stubbornness of the Imperial Fists, the zeal of the Black Templars and the level-headedness of the Crimson Fists. A representative was chosen from each chapter, one that embodied their strengths, to lead this new chapter and nuture it. From the Imperial Fists a captain was chosen, the Templars a Chaplain and the Crimson Fists a Librarian. A council was formed with each one holding equal power, although one of their number would be chosen to lead with absolute authority it times of crisis. The planet Archea was picked as their home world and the Sons of Dorn grew. It wasn't until more then a hundred years later that their name was first heard through out the Imperium, as liberators and heroes. A collection of worlds near the Eye of Terror came under threat from a coalition of the forces of chaos gathered by a foul champion of the plague lord. A crusade was called into action by the chapter and their supreme captain at the time, Alexander, took on the mantle of chapter master and led the Sons into glorious battle. Many worlds were liberated in the following years, the minions of chaos falling like wheat before the scythe, it wasn't until the world of Tarion that the Sons of Dorn faced a true challenge. The enemy had dug in and fortified the world making it all but impenetrable. The cities were fortresses bristling with guns while the streets of the outlying towns were occupied only by the victims of Nurgle's foul plague, shambling aimlessly. Originally the Astartes made planet fall with the rest of the Imperial forces, attempting to take Tarion back by conventional means, it was a disaster. Alexander had not come this far though only to accept defeat. He pulled back all of his marines leaving the guard to hold the few beach heads they had. Using the full force at his disposal, six companies, he launched a lightning raid on the enemy capital. After a heavy bombardment from orbit that brought down the city's void shields the entirety of the astartes streamed down to the streets in drop pods and thunderhawks. The fighting was brutal and heavy, many brothers lost their lives but ultimately Alexander and his honor guard fought their way to the enemy throne room. He challenged the ruinous champion to single combat, confident in his victory. The dual has since gone down in the chapter's history as one their proudest moments.Alexander utterly crushed the traitor marine but not before suffering an almost fatal wound from a plague knife. With the traitors leader dead the rest of the planet soon fell to the might of the Imperium and the Sons of Dorn went on to bring many more worlds back into compliance before declaring their crusade done. When Alexander returned he was lauded as the single greatest champion of the chapter, yet he still humbly returned the mantle of Chapter Master and took his place back on the council. He continued to serve, constantly plagued by the wound he took from the champions knife for another six centuries before finally falling to the infection. This is seen as a miracle, as even an Astartes should have succumbed to the wound, proof of the Emperor's intervention. The chapter continued its glorious history until M36, when the rest of the Imperium was embroiled in civil war over the actions of Gore Vandire. Mysteriously no records exist of the chapter for several decades during this time. All that is known is that they emerged more pious then ever, with less then half of their number still intact. To this day no one outside of the Sons of Dorn knows what transpired and they are notoriously secretive about it, even to the Inquisition. Recently they were involved in the fighting against the 13th Black Crusade, defending the same worlds that Alexander liberated all those millenia ago. A little more then half the chapter was involved, and it was during this time that disaster struck them again. With their chapter split across the galaxy their home world of Archea came under attack from a splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Leviathan. The astartes fleet was hopelessly outmatched in orbit and had to disengage to preserve their numbers, leaving the forces on the ground to fend for themselves. With around four companies worth of marines on Archea they were dispatched across the globe to key cities and locations to protect the population. They fought valiantly but it was a losing battle and eventually the marines had to pull back to the fortress keep leaving the civilians to fend for themselves. Several months in all hope seemed lost, only 135 marines remained and their only hope was that their legacy would continue with the companies fighting at the Eye of Terror. The remaining Sons of Dorn prepared to sacrifice themselves in a glorious last stand when their fortune changed, relief had finally arrived. The forces fighting the Black Crusade had arrived led by Captain Agemmemnon of the 4th company. A distress signal had managed to make it off world before the shadow had cut off all communication. Warp travel had been delayed due to the large psychic interference, but with numbers firmly back on their side, and space back in their hands the Tyranids were defeated, not driven off, but entirely annihilated. When the chapter went about reclaiming their planet they were surprised by what they found, the population was not completely dead as they had expected. They had held off the swarm in pockets, all across the globe, normal humans had survived for months. The chapter began the process of rebuilding, both their numbers and their world. With such an excellent pool of recruits to choose from the future of the Sons of Dorn looks bright, indeed several of the new recruits have already made a name for themselves in the scout company. Let me know what you think :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/page/2/#findComment-2314818 Share on other sites
Newtype
Those weathering powders add a nice look to the Rhino. Well done. If you are using the spray can mate varnish, try a very light coat first to keep the powders in place, then do another light pass. I've used chalk pastels for weathering armour models and the results are the same. Are you planing to use the powders on the Thunder Hawk as well? tagsta
amazing fluff! like it a lot! the refurbished rhino looks ace too! how do you make the weathering powders stick ? and do you apply them after you varnished the model or before? nurgling6688
thanks! Well with the weathering powders i first applied them before the varnish but then a lot of it got blown away when i sprayed it so i did it again, and it stuck better with the varnish already on it. So for the future i will probably varnish, weather it, then varnish it again. And yes i plan on using them on the thunder hawk :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/page/2/#findComment-2315838 Share on other sites

Messanger of Death
What is your approach to painting your reds and whites? I've just stripped the paint off all of my Templars and I am going to shamelessly steal the basics of your paint scheme. It is just so simple yet the contrast is amazing. Red looks like you have gone with Red Gore, Blood Red and then Bleached Bone (possibly Fiery Orange) with a wash or ink of Black. The white looks like it started off as bleached bone and worked up from there but I honestly can't tell... the Veteran Sergeant face plate looks like it was started off with grey and then worked up. Looking forward to the next update. nurgling6688
Thanks! The red starts off with mecharite red, then given two washes of devlan mud, and sometimes a wash of badab black if i feel its not dark enough. Then i line highlight it with mecharite red again, then i mix in vomit brown for the highlights. Go as light as you want, i usually stop right before it become pure vomit brown. For the white i use the technique they used on the khan in the painting masterclass a few months ago. It starts off a mix of graveyard earth and space wolves grey, about 50/50, but a little more brown then blue. Then mix in white for a few layers, you want it to be almost white. Then line highlight with pure white. Then paint devlan mud into all the cracks, you have to be really careful with this part. Then go back and touch up with the white anywhere you need and voila! nurgling6688
alright, so its been awhile, but i finished my second squad. All these minis except for the sarge are old guys i just touched up, so if parts of them look more dated then others thats why. The sarge though is brand new. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/squad1JPG.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/squad2.jpg Brother Sargent Varro (named after a character on a TV show who was killed off, sadly) http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/sarge.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/sarge2.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/sarge3.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/sarge4.jpg Heavy Bolter Marine http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/hvybolter.jpg This is a scout biker i have actually had done since i started this topic but just never poster for some reason. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/bike1.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/bike2.jpg And this is an alternate color scheme i came up with when i decided to update this army. Ultimately i decided it was much easier to stick to the one i have, plus ive grown pretty fond of it. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/alternate.jpg Not sure what i am going to do next. I am going to start working on a flesh tearers army soon for adepticon next year, so these guys may take a backseat for awhile, but what should the next unit i do be? The last 2 scout bikers The last 3 Sternguard the other 4 Space Hulk Termies of the first squad of them or the rhino for the squad above Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/193726-sons-of-dornthunderhawk/page/2/#findComment-2376213 Share on other sites

nurgling6688
if you mean the pose of it? thats just the sculpt, and why they got rid of the model (plus his read head is butt ugly and has a semi fro, what were they thinking?) if u mean the battle damage, i was just playing around with painting battle damage on him. nurgling6688
Hey, i was looking at Somar's ghostly sanguinor topic and someone mentioned doing the legion of the damned like that and i thought, hey what a good idea! Ive had a unit of 10 of these guys sitting around since they came out so i figured i would give it a try. Since my sons are all black i figured this would make them stand out more. All i did was spray them white, wash them with thraka green then drybrush them white again. After that i went in and carefully blended back up to pure white on the edges using very thinned down paints and used a blue/green wash in the recesses, painting it on carefully as a shade. Then i figured flames feature prominently on these guys, and red compliments green, so i painted any areas where there were cracks in the armor (rib cage, eyes, vents on backpack, anywhere where u can see inside the marine) as if it were glowing with a hellfire light. Im pretty happy with it. On future models i may paint some of the flames as if they are glowing as well. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/lotd1.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/lotd2.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/lotd3.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/lotd4.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/lotd5.jpg And here are two guys in progress so you can get an idea of how its done, all theyve has is the green wash. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/lotd6.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/lotd7.jpg Any comments or crit is welcome, thank you! Lysimachus
The main scheme and the LotD one both look excellent, black and white is always very striking but I particularly like the way you've put them together! The ghostly/flame effect on the Legion is also very good. Also, you should post your fluff ideas over in the Liber Astartes sub-forum, would get more comments on it without clogging up the painting forums? Anyway, very nice stuff, looking forward to more! nurgling6688
So i know this guy isn't power armor but he is part of my Sons of Dorn army, so let me know if its ok to post this here or not. Anyway i am adding an Inquisitorial component on to my army which will be my Inquisitor Lord Lucius Garehardt his Interrogator Sebastian Shiloh and the rest of his retinue plus a squad of storm troppers. Well I have finished Shiloh, so here he is, let me know what you think. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/shiloh.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/shiloh2.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/shiloh3.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/shiloh4.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/shiloh5.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/shiloh6.jpg He is made from the body of an Infinity model, the arms and sword of Ibram Gaunt, the plasma pistol of the limited edition witchhunter model and the head from the plasma gun toting Tanith. Its kind of hard to see in the pics but he has an Inquisitor =I= painted in the inside of his coat. His story is that he is in his early 30s and has been Garehardts Interrogator for awhile now and is very close to being a full fledged Inquisitor. They are part of the Ordos that deals with the Plague of Unbelief. Shiloh is a gifted swordsman and that pack on his back is actually a piece of xenos tech that boosts his reflexes (the perks of being an inquisitor). He has a psychic ability to perfectly recall any moment of his life, kind of like photographic memory except he actually relives it in his mind. This assists greatly in collecting evidence and data. Let me know what you think, thank you! P.S. the last two pics are the closest to the true colors and shadows.
