Sons of Dorn/Thunderhawk

Recommended Posts

Thanks! Just took some more pictures as I have the light box set up. Here are some better views of models you have already seen plus a few new ones. :)

Brother-Captain Agamon of the 4th Company.

He holds the honor of the Iron Laurel for leading a campaign against a Hrud infestation with minimum casualties. Enemy casualties, 100%, 4th Company casualties, 3. He was promoted to the rank of Captain a mere fifty years ago but since that time has led the 4th to more victories then any other company in the Chapter and has earned the respect of his fellow commanders and even the respect of other Chapters. He is known as a Tactical genius and recently has been persecuting wars near the Eye of Terror to great success. Due to this, he was away when his home world and chapter were attacked unexpectedly by the Tyranids, by the time he had rendezvoused with the 3rd and 7th companies to relieve the world the majority of the chapter that had been present was decimated. Leading the relief forces he linked up with the remnants of the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 9th companies to repeal the invaders before relinquishing command to Chapter Master Alexandros. In the wake of the invaison the 4th were left as one of the more intact companies (the 5th and 8th having been located near the Eastern fringe at the time, so to far away to participate in time) and have since become the figure head and public face of the Chapter as they slowly rebuild. (Hes my count as Pedro. Agamon was extremely embarrassed when he showed up to the annual meeting of the Imperial Fist's descendant chapters only to find Pedro Kantor wearing the exact same outfit.)

Veteran Brother-Sargent Argos, 1st Tactical Squad, 4th Company.

He has been serving with the 4th since Agamon was a fellow Brother-Sargent. His close personal relationship with the commander led to a promotion to Brother-Sargent of the company command squad upon Agamon's own promotion. However after the intense casualties suffered in the defense of their home world, Archea, against the Tyranids, he requested to be re-attached to a Tactical squad where his experience and knowledge can best be put to use.

Veteran Brother-Sargent Varro, 2nd Tactical Squad, 4th Company.

Varro is one of the elder members of 4th Company, having first passed through its ranks more then a century ago to the honored elite of the 1st Company, The Praetorians. He fought valiantly during the defense of Archea against the vile Tyranids, slaying many of the larger beasts himself. During a particularly intense confrontation with a Lictor he received the scar that he now wears proudly upon his face while saving the lives or several dozen citizens, including several from his own Lineage. After the successful defeat of the Xenos, Chapter Master Alexandros transferred him back to 4th Company where it was thought his experience could inspire future recruits to the 1st. He shares a professional, but at times tense relationship with Agamon, whom he sees as inferior to the deceased Brother-Captain Persus, whom led the company when Varro was a Tactical Marine.

Interrogator Sebastian Shiloh.

Shiloh serves as interrogator to Inquistor Garehardt's, who has a close working relationship to the Sons of Dorn. He is a part of the Ordo Sepulturum, which deals primarily with investigating the Plague of Unbelief and other infections caused by the ruinous powers. Due to the Sons' vast knowledge of all things dealing with Nurgle and their seemingly super-human immune system, even by Astartes standards, it is no surprise that the Inquisition is interested in working with them. Shiloh has a strong dislike for the Astartes though, seeing them as to far removed from humanity to be able to relate to the average citizen who they are charged with protecting. He carries an antique plasma rifle and power sword, which he is an expert with. He also has a device attached to his back that seems to be of xenos origin which enhances his reflexes close to that of an Astartes. This is a fact not over looked by the Marines of 4th Company, who often enjoy sparring with him to sharpen their sword skills.

Unknown Marine. Unknown Chapter. This is an image of a marine taken on one of the battlefields near the Eye. Marines like him have been known to appear to assist the Sons of Dorn in times of great need. They glow an unearthly green and appear to be translucent to some effect. Whenever they appear it is in a thick cloud of fog and they leave burning foot prints in their wake. They seem to be impervious to almost all forms of attack and usually turn the tide of battle with their fearsome skills. No one has been able to reach them to either thank them or question them as they mysteriously disappear as soon as their work is done. All that is known is that their presence has been recorded more times in the last century then any other time in the Chapter's history. Whether this bodes ill or well for the Sons of Dorn only the ghostly specters know for sure.

Comments and Crit welcome, thanks!

Thanks everyone, its always still surprising to hear that people remember these guys from White Dwarf.

@Dark Apostle Thirst: I intended them to be the legion of the damned. I was just writing fluff for them from my Chapter's view as im sure the legion isn't widely known or talked about, so to the Sons they are a mystery.

That makes sense, actually hadn't thought of that. I support your fluff now :)

Man, dunno what to comment on first.

Actually I thought you're painting RG, but those guys being IF successors makes your painting even more awesome!

I especially like the Kantor head swap. Subtle, yet satisfying!

But what struck me most is your Legion of the Damned.

I've loved their fluff since I first read it, and always wanted to add them to my army. And with the inspiration coming from this thread of yours, I might finally give in.

Painting them greenish-white is so innovative... can hardly think of something to add oO

Keep up the good work!

These guys are great. They not only deserved a feature in WD, but they deserve an updated feature! It was a pleasure writing up these guys' article for the Lexicanum, I hope I did them justice! [1]

It was especially great seeing them officially sanctioned because other than Crimson Fists, Soul Drinkers, Black Templars, and now the Executioners, there is virtually no substantial information on any Imperial Fists successor Chapters. Not only does do the Sons of Dorn address that paucity, but they do so with a outstanding background! I really enjoyed the concept of Renaissance culture and the Gladius. The Gladius decision you made was particularly ahead of its time because with the novel, Sons of Dorn (oddly enough the name here is a funny coincidence!), it is now cannon that the Imperial Fists go into battle with swords -- so it makes sense their successor chapters would as well, something you seem to have magically foreseen ;)

really happy 40k moment for me all around.

@augustmanifesto: Thanks again for writing that article up for me. Yeah, the whole galdius thing was actually just based off of Roman history. I had no knowledge of Imperial Fists using them before hand. I have always wanted to include a sheathed gladius on all of my marines, tactical including but have never found a good piece for it until the sword bits from FW's Honor Guard http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...NOUR-GUARD.html. Although that seems a pricey route to go. I have written up even more fluff for these guys recently. I scraped a lot of what i added to it earlier in this thread. My favorite addition i made was Lineages, which i mentioned in the fluff for Varro.

Check out my fluff here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...=0#entry2635359

I am still adding to it.

PS. lol yeah and that books name caught me off guard when i first saw it. GW stop stealing my ideas ;)

From the Imperial Fists a captain was chosen, the Templars a Chaplain and the Crimson Fists a Librarian.

No can do mate, the Templar would murder the Librarian. The Templars hate psykers of all kinds, except Grey Knights.

On the painting side of things though, you have true hobby blood running trough your veins :P

Ludovic

thanks!

@Newtype: I sprayed them white then washed them with thraka green and built them back up to white, that simple.

@Battle-Brother Ludovic: I actually got rid of that idea, you can see there updated fluff in their liber astartes log.

  • 2 months later...

In a rare double whammy update today I give you a sniper scout I converted up. I actually finished the whole squad a few months ago but never took pictures. There are some other minor conversions throughout the squad, the sarge has a beard and another guy has longer hair, I did this mostly to compensate for the fact that there are only 2 poses for the old metal sniper scouts.

Comments and Crit Welcome.

I have been an admirer of this topic since you started it. I was considering converting some infinity minis to use alongside my marines some time as well. Would you mind taking a picture of your interrogator next to a marine for size reference? My local hobby shop doesn't carry infinity and the owner told me that the minis would be too small to use with 40k. I think that he just didn't want to special order them for me.
I'll get a picture soon. They are slightly smaller, but not height wise. They are 'true scale' where as 40k is heroic scale. Basically their heads and hands are smaller then 40k minis, more realistically proportioned. On this guy I ended up using 40k parts for his arms, hands and head so it wasn't a problem, but even if you don't, its not thatttt big of a difference. In fact next to marines it makes the marines look larger.

Thanks for the quick reply to my questions. I am ordering some stuff to make my first squad of "true scale" marines next week. I think I'll get some infinity minis to try out from an online vendor. I am all for supporting my local shop but if they don't want to order stuff after I offer to pre-pay for it then I guess it's their loss.
