IronDuke
So on Friday I played my first game since 3rd ed, against 1500 points of Daemons. His army comprised; The Masque Skulltaker 3 units of Daemonettes 2 units of Bloodletters 1 Daemon prince. I ran; Captain w/ combi flamer, power weapon, melta bombs Command squad w/ 2 flamers, pf (powerfist), pw (power weapon) and 2 storm shields, Razorback w/ twin las 10 man tac w/ MM, melta, pf and rhino 10 man tac w/ hb, flamer, pw and rino 5 man scout w/hb 7 man scout w/sniper and camo 7 man dev w/4 missile launcher and serg w/storm bolter 7 man assault w/flamer, pf and ss Attack bike w/mm As it was my first game we just played a straight forward annihilation game; he was coming in via Daemonic Assault, so I deployed in a solid gun line. I combat squadded my tacs and deployed the heavy weapons with my devestators on a hill on my left flank. The command squad and melta tac started in their transports in the centre, whilst the sniper scouts took to a tower on my far right, supported by the attack bike and flamer tac squad in their rhino. The assault squad started off in reserve and my bolter scouts just pushed forwards. The first couple of turns went well, as he was forced to deploy his units a fair distance away to avoid scattering into my forces or the terrain. I was able to take out one unit each of bloodletters and daemonettes without them getting close and do heavy damage to a second unit of daemonettes. Third turn it all went a bit pearshaped however. During my second turn I had advanced my melta tac squad into rapid fire range of one of his units of daemonettes, leaving a fair sized hole. My opposition decided to gamble and deepstrike his last unit of daemonettes in their, and got lucky with a hit result. It was a good gamble that paid off, and he quickly brought Skulltaker on to support them. His daemon prince also decided to show up, deepstriking next to the Masque and his intact unit of bloodletters who had been advancing behind cover. In my turn my assault marines came down in the middle of the field ( I thought they would be safe for a turn..doh) and the command squad disembarked and gave the daemonettes who had just come in a severe flamer bath and wiped them out. I tried to counterattack his other unit of daemonettes with one of my combat squads only for them to be wiped out by the rending attacks before they could attack. His turn 4, the daemonprince pops out to get right in the face of one of my heavy weapon combat squads, whilst the Masque manages to pull my assault squad into charge range of the Bloodletters. Skulltaker proceeds to charge my command squad, hitting and wounding with 5 attacks. Luckily I manage to save 2 on the storm shield dudes so just lose 3 men. My assault squad gets wiped out, and the bloodletters consolidate towards my devestators. The daemonprince gets tied in combat with the combat squad. The daemonettes charge into my other combat squad on the right flank and destroy them. My turn 4, my devs manage to pop a few of the bloodletters legging it towards them, whilst the scouts take down the Masque with sniper fire from the other side of the board. The combat with skultaker is a draw (god bless storm shields) whilst the daemon prince finishes off the combat squad he was chewing on. Him turn 5. The daemon prince assaults my last combat squad, whilst his blood letters get even closer to the devestators. The last 3 daemonettes on the right assault my scouts in the tower, dragging one down before being clubbed to death with sniper rifles. Storm shields save my command squad again, whilst the power fist marine takes a wound from skulltaker. By this point there really isn't a lot left on the board. My devestators blow away the last of the blood letters, the sergeant cooly slotting the last one with his storm bolter. The scouts sing camp fire songs in their tower far away from everything and my rhinos chug around the field for poops and giggles. His daemon prince finishes off my combat squad (ah for them to have lasted one more turn) and consolidates towards the devs cowering at the back. Stalemate once again with skulltaker. Turn 6. He charges my devestators and takes 3 down on the charge. One of my storm shield marines finally gets sloppy and gets dragged down by skulltaker, before my captain delivers the coup de grace and finishes him off. None of my units are in assault range, and there is nothing left to shoot at. The daemon prince gets lucky and hits and wounds with all his attacks and finishes off my devs. With that the battle is over. As far as killpoints go, I lost 9-7 but had a blast. Daemon princes with daemonic flight are nasty. As are all daemons when they get in your face. The Masque and her pull power is evil. Devestators with 4 missile launchers are excellent, and storm shields are invaluable. If anyone has made it to the end, you deserve a medal. waaanial00
Sounds like a fun game. Demons are very tricksy and can easily pull something out of the bag when you think they are bowed and broken. From the sounds of things you played well, there are always a few goof ball moments in a game but you described far less than I would expect from a new player (ah first game since 3rd ed, should read the whole thing properly). Given that you aren't entirely new I was surprised that you didnt go for an objective mission, I find demons (with their lack of ranged attacks en mass) are less equipped to win an objective mission and you had some decent objective campers there. Still the battle was won and lost. Wan Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194102-1500-pts-marines-vs-daemons/#findComment-2308150 Share on other sites
greatcrusade08
Slaanesh daemons are probable the best build for daemons, i have a buddy who runs alot of fiends, combined with daemon princessand heralds all with pavane. I havent beaten him yet.. although my scouts came closest due to numbers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194102-1500-pts-marines-vs-daemons/#findComment-2308205 Share on other sites
IronDuke
Well annihilation was his suggestion and I just rolled with it to be honest. Next time I will definately suggest objectives! As for goofy mistakes I did make a few, at least once I forgot to reroll for my twin lascannons, and I reckon I could have saved one of my combat squads by embarking and scooting off in the rhino. And I shouldn't have left all my heavy support on one side of the map. Oh well, you live and learn! Cheers for the comments guys.
