winterdyne
A dreadnought as part of the large commission I'm working on. The base is by Secret Weapon Miniatures, so no credit to me for that. All I did was repose the toes and waist of the dread and add a squishy pointy head. pre-paint: http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/ultramarines1/dreadnought/dread_wip1a.jpg http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/ultramarines1/dreadnought/dread_wip1b.jpg http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/ultramarines1/dreadnought/dread_wip1c.jpg I started the paintwork today- the blue's all airbrushed up - added some edge highlights to the feet to help pick out the shape. http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/ultramarines1/dreadnought/dread_wip2.jpg The Dead Guardian was a freebie for my client - painted up in the colours of his usual opponent. I like adding things like this, they're fun. The observant may notice that the toes on the right foot have been adjusted a bit - it wasn't quite sitting right on the Eldar... AdeptusDavidus
The drilled missile launcher is a brilliant touch - love it. Looking forward to seeing this completed, your work is always very sharp. Dejay
Looking fantastic so far, the Eldar is a nice little touch and I really like the resin base. Looking forward to seeing it finished  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194215-commission-ultramarines-dreadnought/#findComment-2309047 Share on other sites
verpine
Wow I really like the eldar on the base... The blue so far is also really nice. Dreadnought bases are 60mm, right? winterdyne
Today, the body was done. Tomorrow, weapons. http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/ultramarines1/dreadnought/dread_wip3.jpg And, yes, dreadnought bases are 60mm. My client and I decided (via msn) the sarcophagus wasn't looking quite right. A few minutes tweaking later: http://www.winterdyne.co.uk/maz/images/commissions/ultramarines1/dreadnought/dread_wip3a.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194215-commission-ultramarines-dreadnought/#findComment-2310682 Share on other sites

AL.
im not a fan of the sandbags, but the rest of the model is awesome. What technique do you use to achive your weathering? winterdyne
The sandbags are a sculpted part of the base. I'm not overly fond of them either, I prefer the wooden trench front bits. The weathering is sponged boltgun metal, drybrushed black and VMC light mud in patches. (dheneb stone would do). Some streaks with devlan mud here and there. The very sharp edge highlight in shadow grey also gives a worn look. For the black, you really need a very dry drybrush - it's more like applying a blusher rather than trying to pick up edges. There are better techniques for weathering that take longer - oil washing, pigment powders. As this is a 'basic' commission (ie not nutbusting), I've gone with what I think is an effective, but quick technique. No more than about 45 minutes total (including drying time, done as I went on) on weathering, most of that being holding it at arms length and deciding whether I'd done enough. It's important to judge when to stop with weathering - too much and you ruin the look of the model you've spent ages building up - too little and it looks unrealistically clean or cartoony. ephrael
It certainly is a fantastic paint job for "basic" work. Your client certainly is getting their money's worth on this job. The weathering looks very well done, especially on the side of the missile launcher. The eldar underfoot and the kill markings on the lascannon arm are a nice touch as well. I love the dark blue you have been painting these Ultras in. Spacefrisian
Nice work. BTW: is he just stepping on that Eldar, if he was standing on it already wouldn't his body been squashed already. winterdyne
Nah he's got super tough, but not tough enough eldar armour. And if he were any flatter he'd not be recognisable.
