Those God-awful heads...

So, I really hate the majority of the heads that come in the new Space Wolf sprues. What is it, like 50 some heads? And really only 1/3 are useful, in my opinion. I'm considering starting a small Space Wolf force, but if I do, I'm going to need to replace those heads with some that aren't so utterly ridiculous.

An aside here, you know that head where the hair on one half the guy's head is standing up straight, and the other half isn't? Anyone else think of There's Something About Mary whenever they see that? Man, I get some ugly mental pictures with that one...

Okay, back on topic. Any suggestions for bearded heads with long hair that I can use to better represent the Wolves? I love the art in the codex and on the cover, and I wish GW had sculpted the Space Wolf heads more like the artwork depicted.

I have been considering the Chaos Marauder heads from Warhammer Fantasy, but I couldn't tell if they were all bald or not. Also thought about the flagellants from the WHFB Empire army. Would either of those work, or are there any other good options?

Any pics from those of you who have done something similar?

Thanks in advance...

you gotta remember not everyone in the army is good looking. theres always some ugly mug. if you want an army of pretty boys maybe blood angels or pre heresy emperor's children might be your best bet.

if you want helmt heads the bare heads with the cloaks from dark angels work, flagellants work, certain chaos helmets work as well. marauders dont have many bare heads most come with a helmet of sorts.

I agree that I personally only liked about a third of the new bare heads. I know that with plastic kits you can't do much in terms of sculpting heads with long hair, but does that mean that you need to give half of them haircuts straight out of the 80s glam-scene, and make the other half balding? I can accept bald Space Wolves, but really? All some of these heads need is a comb-over to complete the fat-middle-aged-loser-on-a-couch illusion.

Ahem.

The best advice I can possibly give to you would be to get some green stuff and teach yourself to sculpt hair. Probably one of the easiest things to sculpt. What I ended up doing was using my knife to shave the really ridiculous hairstyles off, and sculpted long hair onto them.

As far as heads that you don't have to modify, I used some of the Chaos Marauder Horsemen heads, although none of them have full heads of hair. Pretty sweet mohawks though. I also found some good heads on Empire Flagellants and Knights of the White Wolf (not available through GW anymore, but they're on some bitz site).

Its already been suggested, but the Chaos Marauder heads do work. I have seen others use them and they look good as SW heads. Mircro Arts also produce heads that would work. I don't use any bare heads for my Wolves. If there are ones you like from the new or old sprue you'd be willing to swap helmeted heads for, let me know.

All you gents who hate those heads try this ,get a really sharp scalpel and carefully carve away all the hair you hate till your guy is bald. Then get some decent putty ( Magic Sculpt or Millput ) and sculpt the hair styles you like. Use a long thin metal blade to texture the hair.

For top knots ,driil a hole & insert some wire and then cover it with super glue and add a very thin lock of putty. When thats dry go back and cover the lock with more putty and texture to taste. You can smoth the putties with water or spit.

For flowing hair roll out thin strips of putty using a Kids rolling pin and plenty of talcum powder to stop the putty sticking. Apply the thin strips with some super glue and hold them up & away fom the head with Blu Tac. Again once dry over lay with more putty and lay in your hair texture. G.W. plastic is great for carving so the removal of detail is a doddle.

Yeah I wasnt too impressed by most of the heads either-the helmets arent exactly fantastic either TBH.

Personally all my troops wear helmets except for the Sargeant (WG leader) or some of the Wolfgaurd.

I got the Wolf Pack box and made a GH leader, a LF leader, and 5 Wolfgaurd-have only used 4 bare heads in all of that.

A lot of folks use the warriors of Ulric as conversion pieces dont they?

The suggestions of marauder horsemen heads are all on the money. Also there are a couple of Empire Knight heads that don't suck, IMHO.

My biggest complaint about the new heads isn't actually the punk look ones- it's the number that have those stupid topknots, or that look frakkin' OLD. I mean, it's nice to have some heads suitable for LFs, okay, but solidly over half of the bare heads on the new sprue look like they're over sixty!

...and yes, sculpting hair is easy to do; it's a good skill to develop. I've done it on my own WL and on a couple of BCs.
