Tips for Starting Space Wolves

And for competition aswell- Id advocate that while Wolf Gaurd are not a subpar troop choice, they are not the best.

Why? Because while they are powerful theyre simply not as flexable in the standard duties of our troops as a squad of GHs for the same price. They lack special weapons, they must choose between a bolter or bolt pistol, and they dont have access to Banners, wich are a particularly powerful option.

Can WG have more attacks in CC than a GH? Certainly... but if they do so theyll lack ranged firepower. Can you take them with bolters and preserve their shooting somewhat? Certainly, but you still lack special weapons and now cannot shoot your pistols before you assault. Combiweapons can help mitigate the lack of a special weapon, but they get incredibly expensive very quickly, while TDA equiped WG invalidate the options to take rhinos or razorbacks for transports and lower the number of men you can fit in a DP substantially.

For good solid flexable volume of firepower and attacks coupled with a reaonsable pricetag you just cannot beat grey hunters.

And god forbid you play in a tournament or club that dissallows special characters....

@The_Betrayed. That's alot of information considering the OP wanted tips for Starting Space Wolves.

"......Wait, so I can spend 155 points + 35 points for a 10 man squad with LD8, that can drop in front of a enemy mech vehicle and probably kill it—then die horribly, or get shot away, or get assaulted by real assault troops (which they aren’t).

Tactical use: How about I pay 105 points for a meltagun guy in a 5 man squad mounted in a Rhino, and call it good? Or hell, a flamer and stop pretending like I’m stupid and going to throw my precious troops away killing your tanks...."

Actually I would get within 6" of the vehicle for the extra D6. And at that range I can assault after destroying the vehicle. They may not be Berserkers but Hunters aren't Tau either. That's 30 attacks on the charge. Die horribly? To what? A possible Str3 Ap- hit? Get shot? Not if your pinned I won't. As for assaulting assault troops, I think most people know when and when not to pick a fight. Second thoughts maybe not.

I think coming back to the OP, at least one squad of Grey Hunters would be a safe bet! There are fairly flexible in what they do for a troop choice. You might want to think about tactics as your preferred playing style will have a big effect on what units you will choose!
