Battle of Basilica Vitae.

It had all gone so well, thought Maximus. From their initial landing the Knights of the Covenant had systematically destroyed the pitiful resistance that the Chaos scum had offered. Then it went downhill. But how?

How had the Arch Enemy held them at bay for so long. It mattered not, he and his Knights would take the fight to the enemy and cleanse this planet once and for all of the taint of chaos.

The Landraider Maximus and his command squad were being transported in came to a halt just outside of the basilica where the last known coordinates of where a primary target had been sighted. With that Maximus addressed his loyal command squad. “Brothers,” Maximus said in half tones as if the Chaos scum outside could hear him, “We are at the enemy’s doorstep, they think themselves mighty in their basilica, they think they can stay our wrath. Well, we will show them. We will take the Emperors wrath to them.”

With a shout Maximus and his command squad stormed the ancient basilica. Once a place of worship to the immortal emperor of mankind, now it was dedicated to the foul gods of chaos. In the center of the great hall stood a figure of immense size, his ancient power amour showing markings that marked him out as a chaos space marine of the alpha legion. He was holding the still beating heart of a dying imperial guardsman in a foul sacrifice to his gods.

With litanies of hate on their lips Maximus and his command squad charged forward. With his magnificent sword drawn, he cut into the chaos lords retinue intent on getting to grips with the arch heretic himself. Maximus was a roiling avatar of righteous furry cutting down chaos space marines just so that he may get to and kill the enemy commander himself.

Finally after killing scores of chaos space marines, Maximus could get to grips with his target. He slashed forward intending to disembowel his target but the chaos lord was quick despite his size and dodged the attack with ease. Maximus swung round glancing the giants shoulder guards but it merely chuckled at the mortals efforts. It struck back with its huge archaic sword cutting into Maximus’s left leg. Maximus was in great pain but determined to fight on, continued his duel with the Chaos Lord.

It was Gavius’s duty as Knight Champion of Valedor to find and slay enemy champions. He panned left and right trying to find the chaos champion, but he was no where to be seen. Then out from the shadows the champion struck. But Gavius was quicker and deflected the blow with his combat shield. In the same motion he swung his sword round and hacked out a chunk of flesh from the chaos champions left arm.

Maximus and the Chaos Lord continued to exchange blows neither seeming to be able to get the upper hand on the other. The chaos lord was a giant compared to Maximus and if he was to gain the upper hand he was going to have to use his every thing that he knew to defeat him.

The Chosen of Chaos feinted to the left leaving his lower abdomen exposed, giving Gavius the opening he was waiting for. He lunged forward plunging his sword up through the stomach of the chaos scum. The Chaos Champions ribs cracked, ancient rotten organs ruptured and black bile pored from the wound.

In his death throws the Chaos Champion jabbed his decaying sword between Gavius’s shoulder plates and wounded him severely. As the chaos champion finally gave in to his wounds Gavius fell to his knees praying that he had given enough time to his Captain to finish the Chaos Lord off. Seeing his Captain exchanging blow after blow Gavius slipped into unconsciousness.

Maximus, clearly suffering from fatigue needed to end this now, so, in one last final effort raised the Sword of Aegis, gifted to him and blessed by Marcus Aurelius his beloved Chapter Master, in a great arc and delivered the coup de grace, beheading the Chaos Lord where he stood.

With that the battle was done and brother apothecary Anaias saw to the wounded. After being tended to Maximus gazed onto the horizon at distant and new battle fields awaiting him. He turned around and said; “Brothers, war calls, will you answer?” Then as one all the battle brothers present roared in approval. In his heart Maximus knew that he would not rather be with any other in this hell hole than his Knights
