Prot
Alrighty, So I was amazed to see a similar thread started but I did not want to thread-jack Autarch-Andrew's thread because my concern is slightly different. However, like Andrew, I am losing it. I too put together a a very full army, and over the months have been slowly painting my Wolves. My colour pallet? I went White Primer, then Space Wolves Grey, and I use Asurman Blue wash for the grooves (carefully). I'm kind of using a Company that uses red shoulder pads so the contrast is nice, however, literally half the time I look at these guys I think, "I hate this, it's too white, too chalky". And then the other half I'm quite pleased with it. What I'm wondering is does anyone have pics of a pure Space Wolves Grey squad/fig of Space Wolves completed (or near completed)? What blows me away about this is GW themselves have no colour for this, and I really don't want to be stuck trying to find some obscure paint brand, or start mixing base colours and end up forgetting it only to have my army 27 different shades of blue/SW grey/Shadow Grey. And if you look through the codex (which I'd have to guess is photoshopped even) they have about 5-8 shades of base armour in it for the same army! Heck sometimes the same squad doesn't even match. I'd appreciate any advice, or what would be great is pictures of Space Wolves Grey on White. Or light Space Wolves. I'm not sure what to do here, but I'm kind of losing my patience with the whole project because I hate having unpainted figs. Godhead
I have had my wolves for awhile now, but alot of them are in the process of being painted (or actually repainted) because I hated the baby blue that was supposed to be the space wolf blue. Once I started using the GW foundation paints I was pleased with the improvement using the fenris grey (which is darker blue), but in the end I felt it was too dark. Now i just take and empty paint pot and pour a whole pot of the fenris grey and the astronomican grey which gives me a nice blue that I absolutely love. Vet Sgt Ezekiel
I was considering a SW army next and had the same thoughts regarding painting everything the same. I tried the codex/fortress grey route i.e codex grey basecoat mixing up to fortress grey for highlights in layers and that looked good. I used one of the brown washes mixed with thinned codex grey for the deepest parts of the recesses and weathered the armour heavily. I also use acrylic medium to thin rather than water (i believe Klear floor polish works as good) to give a more consistent transparency between layers. It worked and is what i would use if i was going for SW (i've decided to jump on the BA bandwagon instead). If i was painting up a force in stages it would be easy just spraying on codex grey too. Fpr the actual bases i found that brown with gravle/dead grass effect works best rather than snow or city fight grey rubble. One thing i would have like to have tried is highlighting the opposite way. White undercoat then loads of very thin layers of medium thinned codex grey overlapping leaving the first layer where your last one would be normally (if that makes sense). Prot
I'm really trying to avoid massively complex painting on this army. The past 2-3 armies I've done I have really come to appreciate simple, and effective. Godhead, you wouldn't happen to have a picture of one of these basecoated Wolves in the fenris grey and the astronomican grey?
