Brother-Chaplain Gaius
Playing a friendly game with my nephew trying to teach him some of the basic space marine tactics, when this question mark came up. One of his tactical squads was roughly 12-15" inches from one of mine. Now his front 5 marines are within the 12" rapid fire range, but the 5 marines in the back of the squad line are only within the 24" range and further than 12" away can He split the squad with front 5 rapid firing and the back 5 using normal 24" bolter range? or do they all have to either fire once up to 24"? or either all rapid fire at up to 12"? he doesnt want to have the squad move at all so he can fire heavy weapon. x x x x x. <--- within 12" rapid fire range .x x x x x <--- not within the rapid fire range x = space marine model Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194448-need-a-quick-ruling-on-the-matter/ Share on other sites
BlackSpike
We always play that the ones within 12" may fire twice, and the ones further away fire once. (Assuming the squad didn't move. If even one marine shuffles his feet, then all may only fire twice at range 12", and the Heavy Weapon may not fire.) I'm not sure how 'official' this is. stinkenheim
the range of a bolter is 24". any models within 24" may fire once. should there be models within 12" then they may rapid fire instead. there is nothing in the rapid fire rules that would prevent those outside of rapid fire range, but still within the maximum range of the weapon from firing once. just like there is nothing in the rules about rapid firing preventing the squad from also shooting an assalt weapon or a heavy weapon. basically, yes you can still shoot one shot with those out of rapid fire range. Brother-Chaplain Gaius
That has been my interpretation for years but better not to teach incorrect rules! thx guys appreciate it told him B&C would yield fast and decisive response Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194448-need-a-quick-ruling-on-the-matter/#findComment-2312795 Share on other sites
Frosty the Pyro
Blackspike is correct, nothing forces all models to fire in the same way, or even to fire at all. However the rapid fire rules do mean that a model within 12" must fire two shots if it fires at all (aka it can fire two shots, or no shots, but cannot fire a single shot). BlackSpike
So yes, if you have 5 guys within 12", and 5 guys at 12-24", you will get 15 shots ( (5x2)+(5x1) ). In a similar vein, if you have 2 guys with Melta Guns in a squad, and one is within 1/2 range and the other not, you can still fire both, but only one will have the bonus MELTA rule (so roll them separately!). If you have a squad with some assault weapons (e.g. a sergeant with bolt pistol) and some guys without, you can choose to fire the pistol, not fire the non-assault weapons, and assault afterwards.
