Etymology (Likely Meanings & Sources) For Famous Ultramarines Names:

Ultramar -

"Outremer, French (outre-mer) for "overseas", was the general name given to the Crusader states established after the First Crusade: the County of Edessa, the Principality of Antioch, the County of Tripoli and especially the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The name was often used as an equivalent to Levant or Palestine, and incorporated areas that are today large parts of Israel, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon and a small part of Turkey."

That's how he's listed on the page 1 compilation of this thread that I was working from. I dunno why he's listed like that. Haven't got a chance to go and double check EVERYTHING , and I don't have any of my Marine Codices with me so I can't check right now. *shrug*

+++NOTE TO SELF: double check and fix Agrippan+++

Hey I'm a new user and one of the chief reasons I've joined is to thank you guys for making this list. As a very fluff conscious gamer and someone who gets extremely vexed when they break from cannon ( painted the trim on my 3rd company gold almost ripped my hair out) it's a huge boon to have a list like this.

Fixed - Agrippan

Added - Tigurius' title of "Librarian Primus" from Xenology

Added - 9th Company Sergeant Agrivanus from Xenology

Added - Citation for 5th Company Apothecary Samieles from Xenology

Lots of fiddling with format and adding stuff.

The Ultramarines' Great Crusade-era Chief Librarian (pre-Nikea Edict) is named in A Thousand Sons. Unfortunately, I've completely forgotten his name, so I'll update this when I have it (unless someone can ninja me).

He's not explicitly named, but the Chief Librarians of the White Scars, Night Lords, Ultramarines and Salamanders (in that order) are named, and the naming conventions of them follow what we might expect. For that reason, I believe it to be the third name in the group.

I just took an interest to the "Chaos Gate" game and followed it up a bit on the Internet.

From what I can see it is possible to chart every 2'nd Company Marine there to his position within the Company.

Here are a few names allready listed, which are currently listed under "Miscellaneous":

Philotus - Tactical Sergeant 2'nd Squad, Second Company. (Chaos Gate).

Thedotus - Tactical Marine 2'nd Squad, Second Company. (Chaos Gate).

Sempronius - Tactical Marine 2'nd Squad, Second Company. (Chaos Gate).

Gannicus - Tactical Marine 2'nd Squad, Second Company. (Chaos Gate).

Antoninius - Tactical Marine 2'nd Squad, Second Company. (Chaos Gate).

Also of note: Gannicus seems to be listed as Cannicus in the compiled list.

Unless there also is a Cannicus in Chaos Gate, it should be Gannicus.

I also thought it worthy of note to include what appears to be Captain Kruger's personal heraldry:

http://www.codexguardianangels.com/temp_material/Kruger-heraldry.jpg

Note that it also appears as if though Kruger appears on the cover of the game box. Here he displays a slightly different heraldry, but it is not entierly certain that the Marine on the box is Kruger.

Ah... here's the info:

Promus – Chief Librarian. Supported the continuation of the Legions' Libraria during the Council of Nikea. A Thousand Sons, Graham NcNeill

+++

However, note also:

Ptolemy – First and mightiest of the Ultramarine librarians. The library on Macragge is named after him. Courage and Honour, Graham McNeill

So, was Ptolemy dead by the events of the Council of Nikaea?

Ok, so I thought I would add even more names and info.

This time from the "Defenders of Ultramar" Comics.

Learchus Abantes - Sergeant and Acting Captain of the Ultramarines 4th Company, in Uriel Ventris' absence.

- Source: Defenders of Ultramar, part 1.

(Given the previous entry of: Sgt Learchus, Cleander, would this make his full name: "Learchus Abantes Cleander"?

Or are they different individuals?)

Venatus, 7th Squad, 4th Company.

Born on Calth. Lost an arm to Orks.

- Source: Defenders of Ultramar, part 1.

Initiate Lycean Dios, of 4th Company.

Brother to Initiate Uriel Dios, of 4th Company.

- Source: Defenders of Ultramar, part 1.

Initiate Uriel Dios, of 4th Company.

Brother to Initiate Lycean Dios, of 4th Company.

- Source: Defenders of Ultramar, part 1.

Chaplain Clausel.

This time serving with 4th Company.

(Same Clausel as listed before?)

- Source: Defenders of Ultramar, part 2.

Apothecary Selenus of 4th Company.

- Source: Defenders of Ultramar, part 2.

Venerable Dreadnought Barkus of 4th Company.

Destroyed in a bridge demolition while defending against a Ork Horde.

- Source: Defenders of Ultramar, part 3.

Scout Janek of 4th Company.

- Source: Defenders of Ultramar, part 4.

Edited by Chaptermaster Graymantle

Good stuff guys, I'll add it all now.

Cleander is Learchus' second in command.

Is Janek REALLY a Scout who is part of the 4th Company, or is he just attached from the 10th Company?

However, note also:

Ptolemy – First and mightiest of the Ultramarine librarians. The library on Macragge is named after him. Courage and Honour, Graham McNeill

So, was Ptolemy dead by the events of the Council of Nikaea?

Any note on exactly what the library is named? Because right now we have "Librarius Olympus" from Xenology, and that doesn't exactly strike me as having Ptolemy as its namesake...

Edited by The Emperor's Champion

"THE LIBRARY OF PTOLEMY" appears in "Defenders of Ultramar" part 1.

There is an image of it, though I seriously doubt that it is the whole thing that is being portrayed in said image.

My guess is that "Librarius Olympus" and "The Library of Ptolemy" are two different libraries.

Is Janek REALLY a Scout who is part of the 4th Company, or is he just attached from the 10th Company?

Good question!

In the previous issues of "Defenders of Ultramar", it is clear that Chaplain Clausel and Acting Captain Learchus Abantes have been recruiting to rebuild 4th Company after their Losses at Tarsis Ultra.

Learchus himself decides that two initiates, Uriel and Lycean Dios be chosen for the 4th Company on the reasoning that while they almost lost their chance to become Ultramarines, because they looked out for one-and-other, that is exactly the sort of quality he wants in his men.

So it seems they are choosing their own recruits for training.

Whether or not they serve with 4th after this is uncertain, but they are certainly reserved for 4th. - My guess is that they train with 4th as well.

The Company does bring initiates and Scouts with them on their mission, because the Company is under-strength as far as full Battle Brothers go.

Janek in turn does have an IV marking on his right shoulder-pad, so I would say he is with the 4th, possibly having completed his time of training as a Scout with 10th Company.

Janek in turn does have an IV marking on his right shoulder-pad, so I would say he is with the 4th, possibly having completed his time of training as a Scout with 10th Company.

Typically a number on the right should represents the squad number, not the company number.

I had a look through all the issues again.

Well, Janek's IV is on a yellow/gold circle.

The same mark can be found on a Tactical Marine near him. Right shoulder, on a yellow/gold Tactical Arrow.

We find it again on a Devastator Marine's right shoulder, only on a yellow/gold Λ. - In another part of the battlefield.

Then again on another Tactical Marine, in a completely different place.

Even Chaplain Clausel has it on a Λ, onely his is on the left shoulder pad. Admittedly though, he had a Ultramarines U on the same shoulderpad only a few moments earlier and a Fast attack marking on his right shoulder pad. - which makes no sense really, despite him having a jump pack on.

On another image his right shoulderpad is clear blue.

Actually Clausel's shoulder pads change in ceveral places throughout the series - Seems Clausel wears a digital shoulderpad which can be changed on the fly, rather than a painted one

In two other places one can find what appears to be squad markings on Marines in the same way. A I and a II. It still seems that the intent of the author / artists was to use IV as a marker for the Company. That or 4th Company's 4th Squad is everywhere.

From issue 1, a quote from Learchus , regarding the recruitment process. - Speaking to Chaplain Clausel:

"~ I want warriors who will stand by their brothers no matter the cost to them.

That is what made the 4th Company great and is what will make it great again.

Finish up here my friends. You know what I am looking for, so choose those to be inducted to the Company well".

Then later.

Calgar: "How fares the 4th Company? Have you replaced the losses taken on Tarsis Ultra?"

Learchus: "We will by day's end. The Novitiates are of good stock; The Agiselus Drill Sergeants have done their work well."

Then even later, Learchus holds a speech for his Marines:

"Today you are going into battle, and for many of you this will be your first taste of combat as a member of the 4th Company."

I believe the intent is to show that 4th Company has been rebuilt with many young Marines and Scouts going on their "Graduation Quest".

So is Janek a 4th Company Scout? - Well, he certainly serves with 4th, and in light of this other evidence, I would say he is 4th Company.

Ok, here is another name for you:

Battle Brother Jerron

Leader of a multi-chapter deathwatch team. - From this I can only conclude that he is a sergeant.

Source: The Deathwatch Comic.

Edited by Chaptermaster Graymantle
Actually, Deathwatch teams are lead by Captains or Librarians, as far as I know. I guess I need to make a Deathwatch sub-section for the list, because I'm sure there's more than just this one guy if we start looking into it.

Yet another name:

Commander Branter

Leads a force of Ultramarines onboard a Gene-stealer and Tyranid infested ship.

Either he is playing stupid, or he has no idea what Tyranids are, as he seems very brash and downright foolish regarding the severity of their threat.

Could just be bravado and keeping secrets from his human companions though.

Source: The story " Such Horrors", from the "Eternal Damnation" Comic.

Interesting. We have him listed as Commander Bannus on the front page. Could you please double-check the name? I'm pretty sure my copy of Inferno #1 is long-gone...

No, his name is desidedly Branter.

I even took the liberty of sampling a part of the page for you.

Oh and here is some more for you to bend your mind on.

Wrote this up a year ago, so some of it may be in the list allready, but I really dont have time to double check now:

Ultramarines at Deran II.

(The 'Rise of the Swarm' campaign on the Canadian GW site, 2006.)

Chaplain Berthough

Leader of the Ultramarine forces against Tyranids of the Hive Fleet on Deran II.

Time setting: Just after the Battle for Macragge (Reference: The original Brochure for the Campaign).

Notes: Lead his forces in a disasterous mission to secure the Imperial Guard's landing zone on Deran II.

Was shot down in his Thunderhak and subsecuently rescued by his men.

Went on to lead his men in taking the fight to the Tyranids in the West and South.

Fronts were set up at Rheyo Station in the South, and they set up the
