JetfireUK
Hi Folks, I've finally got my arse in gear and here I present my finished Ultramarine Commander! I'm pretty happy with him; I like the way I've done the cloak, the eye lenses, the 'U' and chequer symbols on the knee pads and the icons on the storm bolter, powerfist and backpack. Things that I can see I need to improve on are banners and there's a slight mold line on the helmet. Overall I've done alright. :P What do you lot think? http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL271188.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL271189.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL271190.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL271191.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL271192.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194669-ultramarine-commander/ Share on other sites
cowie165
For me, that chequered kneepad is my favourite! I've always wanted to be able to paint like that but never got there. The cloak looks very nice too. It could possibly benefit from a little more blending but you've captured the highlights and the shadows quite nicely. Thumbs up from me! Shiro the Betrayed
looks nice, maybe make the strap of the gun a bit lighter Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194669-ultramarine-commander/#findComment-2316204 Share on other sites
Argon
Looks very nice. Really like the powerfist and checkering on the knee there. Also enjoying this guy's impression of a Terminator :P . AlexCrute
Blacklining will make it pop. Thinned Chaos Black would be better than Badab Black. Try it, and become addicted (like me). JetfireUK
Thanks for all of your comments. I know that Ultramarines are considered dull but I've enjoyed doing something a little different. Thanks about suggesting highlighting the strap of the storm bolter - I'll get on to that shortly as it's been painted and shaded - the highlight will make it pop. Thanks also about using blacklining. I had used a wash of Regal Blue over the basecoat all over the armour to give a sense of depth but perhaps it's not strong enough to give definition? I will definitely give it a shot with Chaos Black on a test model for a comparison. I'm now working on a UM Command Squad in the other forum if any of you would like to look and comment. :cuss Cheers again, Oli Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194669-ultramarine-commander/#findComment-2317945 Share on other sites
greatcrusade08
Thanks for all of your comments. I know that Ultramarines are considered dull but I've enjoyed doing something a little different. Never! Thanks also about using blacklining. I had used a wash of Regal Blue over the basecoat all over the armour to give a sense of depth but perhaps it's not strong enough to give definition? I will definitely give it a shot with Chaos Black on a test model for a comparison. I find it easier to bascoat in black and take care with the blue first coat to leave recesses, you dont then need a steady hand when blacklining later Nice mini, you have the basics down, you can only get better from here Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194669-ultramarine-commander/#findComment-2318267 Share on other sites
pingo
Personally, I'd use a dark blue rather than black for blacklining (so, bluelining I suppose). Black is too harsh for my taste. Some people like it though. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194669-ultramarine-commander/#findComment-2318307 Share on other sites
JetfireUK
I thought that a darker blue lining around the armour plates would suit better but I'm always open to new ideas. I might give that careful approach using a basecoat of blue and leave the lining in an undercoat too. Thanks for the tips it's these things that will help me become a better painter. Thantoes
I'm also a fan of black lining and also do mine like GC08. As for the model, he makes a fine addition to the 3rd company. Good job on the crisp whites, they look great!!! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/194669-ultramarine-commander/#findComment-2319814 Share on other sites
Justicar Valius
Thanks for all of your comments. I know that Ultramarines are considered dull but I've enjoyed doing something a little different. Correction, Ultramarine 2nd company are considered boring, all the other ones are great :D Love it, never tried blacklining apart from on the plasmary bit of plasma guns so all i acn say is it's great for that!
