GW Killing off Leman Russ?

So I believe that the old legends and sagas are told that Leman Russ got a vision during a great feast and left his glorious chapter to go off into the eye of terror and we've never seen or heard from him again...yet. He also said he would come back during the wolf time. Still, it was never said or hinted at that he was dying. Yet in the new codex there are quotes that have slightly changed what is quoted.

In the quotes for his last words in the codex, they put in the beginning. "as I am now dying" and "as I take my last breath". (Not exact quotes as I'm pulling from memory right now since my friend brought it to my attention)

I'm hoping this to be taken as a non literal sense of dying. As in he is dying on the inside from having not been there to save the emperor during the herasy. Still though with the random quotes that are re-written in our codex I'm worried that GW may be trying to write out Leman Russ and change his status from "lost" to "dead".

You are, I assume referring to the quote on the page detailing Long Fangs?

Fear not, whelp. Our histories are long, and much that was once was known is lost. Russ's "last words" were (I believe) originally printed in C:SW 2nd Ed, and have been reproduced on a number of occasions. It was partially reproduced for Index Astartes: Space Wolves, where it tells of Russ returning for the Wolftime. Russ has vanished, that much is true. However the Wolf Time is our version of the End of Times, when the Emperor shall once again return at the death of the Imperium and lead the heroes of mankind to the great battle for the end of the Universe itself.

Russ probably isn't dead, however he is lost. None can say what he hunts, though there was a suggestion in the 13th Black Crusade Campaign that he was the one coordinating the 13th Company, so that's something to chew over. Russ's last words are more of an allegorical fable at any rate - when the Imperium needs him, no matter what he shall return. And once more, the Wolves will ride with their King.

those words are from page 48 of the 2nd edition codex, slightly shortened in the 3rd were most of you whelps and bandwagoners know of today... until the release of 5th. Page 47 of 2nd edition speaks of Leman Russ and his last days, along with the first great hunts. Old legend also stated that he was in search of the tree if life to revive the emperor. It is also said that Russ had the ability to walk between the land of the living and of the dead, page 12 of the second edition codex tells of a legend were Russ fought a blackmane wolf, slew him and made a magic cloak that allowed him to do so.

Russ is not dying, How can a giant amongst Primarchs die?

Well... Ferrus Manus, Sanguinius, Horus, Curze... they are hard, but not invincible. Not to mention the literal "giant," Magnus had a small run in with a certain Mr L. Russ, of Fenris. That ended badly for him, IIRC. His physical form was shattered, and it was only his abominable sorcery that allowed him to remake his body in a corrupt and blasphemous form.

The same bit about Russ's cloak is in the 5th Edition book. Just which page it's on I dunno, since my 'dex is hidden somewhere under my D&D books and I'm too lazy to search for it.

page 88 :D

All I'm gonna say is thanks, been searching all of my old bits of paper to find that and it was right under my nose. Have a keg from me, as I must have had too much

lemans always been dying. it may have been a genetic suicide as all the primarchs seem to have left either on their own free will (maybe something to do with being in normal space (notice how all the chaos primarchs are still kicking it in the warp) . (corax, jagita, lion, leman) or locked in some form of stasis (i think the lion could fall into this) guilliman, or dead/missing Fuerrus, Vulkan, Sanguinus

All things that draw breath, must die, so as I draw breath so must I die. So as I live I am also dying now. The words of Russ mean this simple truth. All things must die, and I leave my children now, and may die in the task I under take, but know this, no matter how long I am gone, no matter what proof of my death you find, know that by my word, I will return for the Wolftime, and togther we will stand with the Emperor once more.

That is all that was ment, and it has remained unchanged for for many moons. If you want to see the real truth of the Russ as GW Saw him... Check out the Rouge Trader book and find the picture of Commander Leman Russ....

Russ leads the 13nth company- he abandoned his mighty armor in a temple to Khorne, having killed every damned creature in there. He is now shrouded and cowled in rags, and leads his ancient brethren through the warp hunting down magnus, to fulfill his oath to bring him before the emperor.
Nice that someone else remembered the pic from the RT book. Russ was pretty messed up looking in the pic and back then, we were lead by Imperial Commander Enoch and we hailed from the planet Lucan back in those days. Ah, Rogue Trader...the beginning

Nah, I think the Space Wolves were lead by Commander Storm. I think Enoch was just a Captain. Good stuff though.

Valerian

no it was enoch lord lucan, comander storm was the lt comander (first company captain) along with captain grey lock, and infernus

there was also a navigator durillan ocilenti(apologys for the spellings),in the great hall of the space wolf fortress on lucan in the rt book there was a ship said to have been the one russ circumnavigated the iperium in called the medussa

intrestingly the first retcon of this fluff came in 2nd edition space marine aka epic, and there was a referance to lucan as a wolf outpost world in the gates of chaos pc game manual .................~gos back to the cornor and jibbers about beer and orks for a while

Oops, I got it backward then. Will have to look through the Book of the Astronomican when I wake up tomorrow afternoon for a refresher.

V

I for one do not believe he is dead! he shall return to us!

the manager of my local GW keeps taunting me saying that he has spent so much time in the eye of terror that he has become a demon prince.

i do not believe his lies though.

on a personal note though i have to say i get a strange feeling that i cannot describe when i read the bit under the long fang entry in our codex

"AND COME I SHALL NO MATTER WHAT THE LAWS OF LIFE AND DEATH FORBID. AT THE END I WILL BE THERE. FOR THE FINAL BATTLE. FOR THE WOLFTIME"

however i might just be going mad from the wolfwhiz ale
