Ultramarine Command Squad

Hi Folks,

This year I'm trying to knock down my pile of unpainted miniatures that are virtually all Space Marine orientated. You may have seen my SM Commander in the hall of honour and here's my take on my Command Squad.

The first chap will be finished shortly - he just needs the packpack icon painted and then highlights to his armour. I'm pretty please how his face has turned out.

I also thought to start on the Standard Bearer (although I'll leave the freehand on his banner to the end. The face came out quite well (although he looks like he's wearing eye make up and lipstick! I'll get more on this chap done over the coming week. The only annoying aspect is the armour appears slightly lighter than the first chap - but I can live with that.

Any thoughts or comments are happily received.

Hi Folks,

I didn't get as much painting as I wanted done today but I've done a little more on both the Apocathary, Champion and the Heavy Weapons chap. It's going to be a little tricky trying to get these five done by the end of the month but hopefully I'll pull something out of the bag this week.

I've tried to continue the chequer theme with each of the kneepads (bar the Apocathary) having one with chequers and the other with an Ultramarines symbol. I'll probably do something on elsewhere for the Apocathary to tie him into the squad.

What do you think so far?

I don't know what it is but your UltraSmurf with the bare head (the 1st one) looks like a guy with a plastic head...(I know he does, but it's all shiny...don't like it :( )

Apart from that, I really like your blue! Keep it up!

Cheers for the comments. Hopefully the shiny-ness is down to the brightness of the halogen lamp at close proximity to the figure. When I get my camera out again at the weekend I'll try some daylight shots to see if there's any difference.

Thanks about the blue - it's tricky to get a good colour without it being too pastel like.

Hi Folks,

Here's an update. I've still got a bit to do on these plus there's the banner to finish but I might get these done by the end of the month. Mostly I need to finish flocking the bases, do a couple of icons on the back packs and make sure all the little touches like eye lenses are finished.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with them - the 'U' symbols are still tricky but I'm getting there. I've noticed that I put the icons on the shoulder pads on the wrong shoulders but that'll just help me differentiate them from the regular troops.

So what do you lot think?

Hi Folks,

Update! My Command Squad are finished!!

Overall I'm pretty happy with these five. The banner was my attempt to get away from the standard GW approach whilst still keeping with the 3rd company ideal of killing Tyranids. The powerswords were tricky. I used the techniques from the Space Hulk issue of White Dwarf and I think I did alright. More practice will help.

What do you lot think?!

Thanks very much fella. I'm very proud of these and I like breaking away from the 2nd Company shadow.

The chequered knee pads are my crusade badges. Old GW fluff had marines with Chequers on their armour and I like harking back to the past - this is my nod to the old school.

very nice work so far, i would suggest adding an extreme highlight of space wolves grey to some of the edges just to break up the blue a little bit and make it a little less flat.. if thats not your style then a wash could do the same trick by darkening the recesses.. food for thought mainly

other than that a few of them need the soft armour on the front of the legs painting.. not sure if its not done yet or you're like me and have forgotten them

Thanks again for the comments. I had done an edge highlighting with a 80/20 mix of space wolves grey and Ultramarine blue but perhaps from the lighting and photos this has been drowned out.

But I do find contrasts difficult to see sometimes so I think that I'll to make the transitions a little more stark so that the armour looks better. Thanks for the tip.

The metallics are Boltgun metal with a few glazes of Badab Black. Glad you like them.

Looking great.

The only thing I'd change is to add some veins to the sides of the Tyranid head as it look a bit "blob-ish" right now.

Really love the chequered kneepads. :tu:

Thanks everyone for the positive response and helpful criticisms. The banner is freehand. I did look at the banners in the Marine Codex but thought to move away from them a bit to personalise my army.

I'm going to dip into something a little more heretical for my next post. I've a bunch of Nightlords to paint up. Photos to follow once I've got the boring mold lines and flash cut off.
